I just wish we had more of those smoothly 2D animated films like disney and don bluth did in the past, that's why the Disney's Renaissance Era and the Golden Age Era were two of my favorite eras of cartoon animation, they had a lot of effort put into them.
superyoshibros99 You should watch a lot of the films that have been coming out of France by Sylvain Chomet like The Illusionist and Triplettes of Belleville. I'm not saying that 3D animated movies should die out but there should be a balance between the two. In fact it would be awesome if there was a movie that combines 2D animation with 3D/CGI elements. The only thing I can think off on the top of my head is The Amazing World of Gumball, which has beautiful animation in my opinion, even though it's not a movie and is just a cartoon series, still it's a perfect example of blending artstyles. superyoshibros99 Awesome! And I couldn't agree more. I think big studios don't understand that audiences just want good _stories_ and nobody really cares about the medium. When The Princess and the Frog didn't sell well, it feels like their consensus was, "Well, it must have sold poorly because it was hand drawn" but that isn't the case at all. (Also, not to nitpick you, but I wouldn't say Kells borrowed from Tartakovsky at all, I would say it borrows from the source material: traditional Irish illuminated manuscripts like the Book of Kells. The styles of Song of the Sea and Kells are both inspired by traditional Irish artwork. But I do see your comparison with Tartakovsky, it is a very flat style with less perspective and very clearly communicated posing and shapes)
Directors of Brother Bear, Pocahontas, Mulan talking casually giving good advice in a 5 minute video... no big deal - this video should have 5 million views, lol.
Thank you three! I feel as if these tips and advice are sometimes overlooked or not given to young animators at the right time in their careers. To see three industry veterans band together and do this is really a treat. Let's bring 2D back to the masses!!
The Art of Aaron Blaise the case is entirely the same for me. Learning from you gentlemen is quite the honour for kids like myself, who grew up loving that scene from the lion king, and who were inspired to draw by YOU! I am what I am because of Disney and you are part of what that is for me. I love 2D animation , I love drawing animals, caricatures and basically anything that's a but magical. After seeing this video, I know I owe that huge part of myself partly to you specifically, Aaron. I know that because that darned scene with skeptical little Nala's scrunched up face has stuck with and always tickled me. So cute. I don't know if that is where my career is going so far (I'm in law school because i like to confuse people by doing random unexpected crap haha I dunno) but if I follow that dream, I want to be able to make people laugh and remember cute scenes like that. I don't care if they don't know my face or name. Making people feel is an awesome, awesome gift. Sorry I got so intense and wrote so much. I just thought you should know that artists such as yourself inspire us youngins more than you probably realize.
My dream is to some day be in your position, Aaron, make a living out of my biggest love - telling stories through animation, and I adore your channel because whenever I feel like it's impossible, too out of my reach, or that I'm not good enough, and my fiery passion dies - it gives me hope, fills me with motivation and gives me the power to keep fighting and work even harder. Thank you.
Shachar Tsafon I wish you all the very best in pursuing your goals and ambitions. Do what you love. Life is too short for anyone with the dreams to be fulfilled to simply forego them and pursue something else. You never know, someday, somewhere, a young person, who is yet to be born, may one day see your work and get inspired by the visuals that you will provide.
I feel just like you. I was just very depressed and demotivated this last weeks and today I sitted and watched some videos of this very wise legend. Now I want to draw, animate and do stuff with a really big smile. Thanks Aaron ♥
I know this is an OLD comment, but I would say the likeness was also based on the voice actor of Maurice, Rex Everhart. Google him and you'll see he looks a lot like Belle's father. But I would totally agree, they used aspects of that animator too. Especially his little nose!
I don't know why but this brings tears to my eyes. It's great that you guys care. The dream of working in animation seems far off, but hearing the advice brings it close and realizable. Thanks so much. This is a great channel.
This is great advice from some true masters! Also, it appears that bright colored and patterned shirts are an important thing to have when doing art ;)
May I ask how animators actually manage to become directors of animated features? How did you work your way up in the industry? I'm interested to know :)
Man it would of been chill to have an art teacher like you for HS, when I was a senior in HS. An art teacher was very whats the word.. Harsh with artwork, now when I think of art its a way of showing who you are and expressing your feeling and the love you see around you or whatever comes to mind. But I almost failed art completely which had my hopes running low with art. Now I'm not exactly great especially with anatomy but each of your videos are very inspiring. Not to mention you are showing people how to have fun with art, no matter at what pace. That art teacher though I know he meant well but he really show how art really isn't. If it wasn't amazing or didn't look exactly how he had it, he make you do it again or else fail. I was the oddball one and kept working with art my way and since I've found this channel (thanks to a friend of mine) you make art so much fun, and entertaining not to mention I love the intro guitar playing there I like playing the guitar as well. Also awesome you got to meet up with those two artists as well, very inspiring. :)
3 very talented gentlemen. Thanks for creating unforgettable childhood memories through your art and storytelling. As an animation student, I look forward to carrying that legacy on as well someday.
every time i seem frustrated or down with my artwork or the whole process i just see one of your videos and no matter if it was 1 min or 50 i just seem to pick right back up. I feel very inspired and excited by the process rather than frustrated and that's what i need, so thank you!
You're the best Aaron. It's incredible that someone with your talent and experience is openly sharing the stuff that only someone like you would know or be able to access ( don't think many of us will be in a room with these dudes any time soon!). I get the feeling your name's gonna start popping up with animators down the line when asked how they learnt some of the stuff you talk about. Thanks from all of us.
Hello Mr. Blaise. I just wanted to thank you for your videos. I am a costume design graduate student and for a while I have been struggling with my renderings. Watching these videos are not only helping me to make my renderings more professional, but giving them life as a character. Thank you again.
Great advice Aaron, Tom and Eric, thanks for sharing. You guys look like a great group to be around :) and its great to hear about your Disney experiences.
What Eric said really resinated with me. It reminds me of the old Disney animations, where the character really goes into their feelings 100%. A sad character would slump right over and drag their feet and a happy character would have their chest out to the sky, head up and proud looking. I need to exaggerate my characters more. Also, Tom's advice was great as well. I realised that I should try and be better then what I was a week ago and not compare to other people.
Thank you guys so much for doing this; starting out in the field of animation is difficult, and having masters of animation take the time to talk to us is really encouraging. Thanks again Aaron, Eric, and Tom!
This is the part where i love his channel too much and can't think of anything nice to say that I haven't already said. So... -I really love that *signature* logo at the beginning. *BADUM TISHHHHHHH*
Your videos and tutorials are top-notch material that make me grow as an artist . Thanks for convey all your art and your wisdom , I hope the next generation of animators can someday live up geniuses like you. Greetings from Spain!
Yeah, Both Tom & Eric are saying right .One must start learn right now because oneself can learn by his/her experience & find out that what are the secrets & what should learn next or what's missing for becoming better Artist as Tom saying & if you focus carefully you can also find that where to start as Eric is saying about observation & Caricaturing & this is the main thing that Art Fundamentals also teach about observing, how to seeing & Feeling then Caricaturing that feeling then Visually Communicating to the audience by whether it's Paper, 3d Software etc. Thanks to all of you Great Legends by giving this Great Advice to us.
Great! I worked with Eric Goldberg on the Aladdin attraction for Japan Disney and worked with Tom’s brother Tony on a couple of Feature Animation movies. What you are saying is true. I got into computer graphics in 1985. There were absolutely no schools teaching the technology. My parents did not support my endeavor to go into art. From the time I was in fifth grade I got a job and paid for my own classes on my own. I’ve had a wonderful career in the film industry working with the most amazingly, Talented people in the world. If you really want something, you will work hard to get it. Have faith, seek out knowledge and be the best at what you do. I hope to meet Aaron someday because I would love to draw animals like him!
Your channel is amazing and inspiring to aspiring animators such as myself. You have added so much value to the work I do just with your channel. Thank you
"You ain't ever had a friend like" all of our dedicated and personality-adding animators. So it's awesome to reconnect with them and be inspired for my creations and techniques.✏🎥💪🏾☀️ Stay safe everyone!
Hi Aaron! Quite nice and humble people. Thank you very much for this gift that you share to all of us, the graphic artists! I talk from myself: it’s really motivating how world-class experienced artists, especially those like you who already have worked in a dream company like Disney, talk about confidence, dreams pursue and the nowadays opportunities! All the given tips are like gold! It gives me hope and courage to keep in the track… :) My best wishes to all of you. Have a good one!
So Awesome, I appreciate you and your professional friends taking time to provide invaluable tips to us! I have always wanted to be a traditional animator, but kind of got sidetracked for years by the whole 3D craze, but now I am looking to increase my skills as a 2D animator and fulfill that life long passion. Definitely going to take some classes from you guys! Again, thanks!
I'm 14 and I'm wanting to be animator when I grow up. I try to draw and practice everything I can grasp into. Also, I heard it's hard to become an animator. Is it hard/rare?
Lol you don't need to wait to be one, I started when I was 10. It depends to be honest. If you want to be as great as the Disney animators, it's going to take a lot of time. That's the hard part. Animating in general isn't hard. Well, that is if you don't have patience.
I'm 16 and have been drawing since I was at the age of 11, and to be honest it requires a lot of patience. You will have to be willing to draw up to 24 pages of detailed sketches and those 24 pages equals a second. So that's about a thousand pages per minute that you'll be willing to draw. The animation has to be so smooth and fluent and you need a lot of effort put in them. Some animators sacrifice to take up these positions and the assistants do the coloring and paint the backgrounds. But in the end if you're passionate about your work, it will look very good and your animations will feel life like to the human eye! At my age, I still have a lot of things to learn myself, but hey, like the book by disney, "Illusions of Life" said, "If you think you're not good enough, try doing it 2 more years, and even 2 more years until you get it perfect". That's my two cents, good luck!
Did you guys do this after the portfolio reviews at ProWeekend?I was there with Tom!Got some great advice. It was all a wonderful experience. It was great meeting all three of you guys.Great video as well. :)
i want to become a Disney animator but i don't want to use technology....i want to do it the traditional way.But today as we know the world...everything is technology..... and i'm crap at technology :( The Art of Aaron Blaise... do you think i could still try....or should i just try hard to be good at technology
That is the bare minimum hurdles you'll deal with as an animator. Thing is, you can always learn and progress, that is a lifelong process in your career. Technological advancement has always been a part of animation - from flipbooks to cells to drawing tablets to software to more advanced software to CG tools. This field, whatever the technology, probably isn't for you.
Count Dracul I think it's because Disney where not making lot of money with the 2d animation while pixar was making lot of money from up and other cgi animations so Disney quit 2d and move on to 3d because kids find out 3d was more interesting cause of realism. So yeah Disney always wants what ever makes lot of money
@@Som3D no you are wrong, Disney making a lot of money in 2d animations too but the only reason they move because of the production, you see 2d animation coild take a lot of time to animate and yeah they are earning a lot of money because of the namebut they were loosing money on the production, a single 2d films now a day will take 3 to 6 months while 3d will only take maybe 2 to 4 months but the big thing is they are making a lot money in both types of animation but in 2d there is a lot of work. My point is 3d is better as 2d
(soory for mistake i'm french XD ) you offering such a good opertunity for us with your advises and courses so thank you sooooooo much. I have a idea for your video. it would be great if you comment some student animations or drawing because i think we do all same mistake at begining. :)
This video give a persob like me who troubles to identify a character style inspiration and as a person leaving school not quiet sure what to do it gives me hope.
You know what? Thank you so much for this. Up till now I kinda just thought I'm not able to be amazing at art as some of my idols are. That I'd always just be this mediocre artist who's only really good at drawing cartoons. But this video made me realise I'm more than capable of bettering myself if I just put in the work to do it. So starting tomorrow (I'm about to sleep right now) I'm going to search up some lessons and get to work. Thank you so much.
I'm planning to go to Texas A&M, I heard they have a great animation program and close to pixar. I narrowed to this mainly due to the fact that art schools like CAL arts or Ringling are too expensive, and Fred park is a professor there :)
Hey Aaron! I just want to say thank you!! and thanks to Eric and Tom for the wonderful and great advice, I recently stopped studying my degree in Animations to focus more on my craft and my skills because for me it is important to do more productive work, I studied motion graphics in the past and studied animations for 3 years, after learning and developing the skills I didn't had the time to make my own Animations that I wanted to. I am an aspiring 2D Animator with a hearing loss on my right ear. I studied 3D but it never my thing and I got to admit I hated 3D.... 2D is my passionate and love ever since the early days of Walt Disney. I never want to stop drawing 2D it is the talents and skills that I grew up to be. What advice would you give to animators who stopped studying and wanting to get a job in the animations studios? because I am in this situation right now and it is so hard since it is very competitive and I am only 25 but nowadays there are are 3D and I don't like doing 3D. I hope you can help me with the answer. It would means the world to me Talk soon mate.
2D animation will never be dead.
+Taco Love I don't think it ever went dead. In fact, I think hand-drawn animation is more alive now than ever before since it's easier to do now. Computers have enabled amateurs and studios to make hand-drawn animation much, _much_ easier. :)

superyoshibros99 You should watch a lot of the films that have been coming out of France by Sylvain Chomet like The Illusionist and Triplettes of Belleville.
Ernest et Celestine is also a fantastic hand drawn French film.
Also, look up The Secret of Kells and Song of the Sea by Cartoon Saloon from Ireland.
Also, I assume you're familiar with Studio Ghibli, but they have made quality hand drawn films.
ALSO I hear Brazil has put out some animation recently like A Boy and the World but I haven't had the chance to watch it.
Steven Bowser I am aware of Studio Ghibli and also aware that france and other countries still do hand drawn animation, but I just have pity for the American animation industry, I wish we would go back to making 2D animation again.
I just wish America would make these 2D animated films again, this is why I binge watch all of disney's classics and don bluth's old movies. Awesome!
And I couldn't agree more. I think big studios don't understand that audiences just want good _stories_ and nobody really cares about the medium.

Directors of Brother Bear, Pocahontas, Mulan talking casually giving good advice in a 5 minute video... no big deal - this video should have 5 million views, lol.
Aaron, Eric, and Tom all together giving tips? As a an aspiring 3D animator (who's actually become enamored with 2D) this a dream come true.
Juan Rubio Thank you!
Thank you three! I feel as if these tips and advice are sometimes overlooked or not given to young animators at the right time in their careers. To see three industry veterans band together and do this is really a treat. Let's bring 2D back to the masses!!

Same here! There are so many ideas that can fully realized in 2D animation with fun designs and unique to our style animating as a whole.
The guy on the right (Eric?) is Belles father!!
+Helmutlozzi YES
+Helmutlozzi No. Look at his face and body + the voice. He's Jasmin's father from Aladdin.
Wooden Iron That too!

Best part: seeing a happy life with good friends. Lots of love in that room.
The Three Wise Men of Animation in the same room, just fantastic!

This is great advice from some true masters!
Also, it appears that bright colored and patterned shirts are an important thing to have when doing art ;)
Nick Burch I honestly believe that without those, you'll never get to be an artist :p
Great! So happy my Hawaiian shirt still fits me... I should probably wear it while I'm working.
Nick Burch Eric's wife makes him those shirts.
Your whole channel is amazing. I am so grateful to you and to have found it
Thank you. Lots more coming soon
I wrote u a message with a pic of what u taught me of Fb...it's in your "other" folder

I get the feeling your name's gonna start popping up with animators down the line when asked how they learnt some of the stuff you talk about. Thanks from all of us.
exactly what I needed to hear :) thanks a lot!
I love hearing "old hares" (what we call "old stagers/hands" in german) talk about this stuff ;D
Hello Mr.
You guys look like a great group to be around :) and its great to hear about your Disney experiences.

so much love between the "lines", thank you, for sharing this moment of life.
Thank you guys so much for doing this; starting out in the field of animation is difficult, and having masters of animation take the time to talk to us is really encouraging.
Thanks again Aaron, Eric, and Tom!
What's with all the "young animator" bias? Some of us middle-age guys want to learn from you guys too ;)
+BAwesomeDesign Lol. True :) Force of habit with my phrasing. But this does address questions we get a lot from people starting out of school.
Haha. Thanks! Will likely join your online school when my other online classes are up (too busy right now). Thanks again for all you do.
Thank you all for taking the time to give us such great advice! You're all an inspiration! Thank you for sharing!
Your channel expresses the love you have for art and animation. Thank you sir and keep up the great work.
Love your shirt Eric! so cool.

Thanks for sharing your weekend with us. And thanks for those tips!!
Aaron you have the best channel on UA-cam hands down!
This is some of the greatest advice I heard in a long time. I'm going to pass this video around to my classmates.
Thank you so much for putting this online.
Really inspirational and really great advice!
that was some great advice. would be nice to see more of the disney guys art work on youtube..
Great advice guys. Side note, I actually got to meet Eric at an event called TAAFI. That was such a nice boost to the day.

It gives me hope and courage to keep in the track… :)
My best wishes to all of you.
Have a good one!
Wow how have I just seen this video! So much talent in one place.
Your channel is a pearl. Thank you, Aaron
thank you so much Aaron. your channel is wonderful.
I honestly prefer 2d to 3d animation. There's just a certain kind of charm that brings you closer the artist that you dont get in 3d
I really hope to be like all of you guys when I'm older. Some great advice, thanks!
Wow great advice by Tom and also by Eric. Keep doing such great videos plz
my goodness, i have always wanted art to be integral part of my life, hope it comes true
+SparkleFountain hello there!
+BʘʘmBang LOL HI
+SparkleFountain Same o.o.
awesome video. great to hear the other artist discussing their skills, I applaud you all :)
i want to become a Disney animator but i don't want to use technology....i want to do it the traditional way.But today as we know the world...everything is technology..... and i'm crap at technology :(
The Art of Aaron Blaise...
do you think i could still try....or should i just try hard to be good at technology
june cray I’m not Aaron, but practice and practice at what you know best.
june cray
You will definitely need to know how to use technology
That is the bare minimum hurdles you'll deal with as an animator. Thing is, you can always learn and progress, that is a lifelong process in your career. Technological advancement has always been a part of animation - from flipbooks to cells to drawing tablets to software to more advanced software to CG tools. This field, whatever the technology, probably isn't for you.
Thank you for this! All three of you are amazing inspirations to me! It’s my dream to be able to work for Disney some day :’)
Los héroes que hicieron que mi infancia tuviera sentido 😭💖gracias por eso, por esto, por todo. 🥺✨
Artists who made old classics don't work with disney anymore??
That's why Disney sucks nowadays
Count Dracul I think it's because Disney where not making lot of money with the 2d animation while pixar was making lot of money from up and other cgi animations so Disney quit 2d and move on to 3d because kids find out 3d was more interesting cause of realism. So yeah Disney always wants what ever makes lot of money
Pixar is a part of Disney, tho. They simply transferred their staff to 3d, those who wanted to move on anyway.
Thank you for sharing your advice with us.
THANKS AAARON exactly what I needed!!!!

Thank you so much Aaron
I've always wanted to become a Disney animator one day. You guys inspired me so much :)
Thank you for doing this, Aaron :)
Thank you for sharing this!
This video is gold, thank you!
I'm planning to go to Texas A&M, I heard they have a great animation program and close to pixar. I narrowed to this mainly due to the fact that art schools like CAL arts or Ringling are too expensive, and Fred park is a professor there :)
How have I only just found this channel!? Really great videos!! I am learning so much from your vids, so thank you very much!! :)
Hello Eric
I love how you animate characters
You are my inspiration
Awesome, thanks a lot for this tips!
