A vital First Division "four-pointer" relegation clash. Great header by Mel Holden (RIP) for our goal, but sadly, the 1-1 draw was of little use to ourselves or Spurs come the final analysis, as we both slipped down to The Second Division.😭😭
Made no odds anyway, they went down five games later, as did we of course . One bad decision (of many from this obvious clown of a ref) MIGHT have been what sent us down. That, or the Coventry vs Bristol City travesty on the final day, where the Coventry chairman, Match of the Day's very own Jimmy Hill, got their game delayed 15 minutes (supposedly down to crowd congestion) and consequently the two teams conspired to play out their match in a 2-2 draw, knowing Sunderland had already lost, so they would both stay up. Still shameful after all this time.
Mel rules the skies.
God bless 👍

Sunderland needed VAR back in 1977. ... Unlucky
Bazil Fawlty in goal for the lads.
Brilliant away support from Sunderland. Back then it was a 6 - 7 hour drive to London .
Sunderland got absolutely battered that day... Happy slapping inside and outside...before during and after the game
Seemed a good goal to me!!!
Proof that London clubs got special treatment back then. Ref was def paid off. That was a goal.

The game was played amidst an orgy of violence on the terraces and outside the ground

The year of the jommy hill and covrntry cheat, i still resent them to this day, as a child it broke my heart, cheated
Number 1 is Gary Rowell number 2 is Gary Rowell.............

Barry Daines was by far the worst keeper to play for the club.
