You are my number one channel for information. You are a straight shooter. No pulled punches.
I live on the southeast plains of Colorado in Lamar. We have both mule and whitetail. The live main along the river while the mule deer are on the plains themselves.

I’m in northwest Oklahoma and I’ve heard all of these terms with the exception of the European weight method. We have 90% white tails 10% mulies

In New Zealand we also have a small breed of white tail on stewert island

Very interesting DD. Roe deer are additionally scored for “Medal” rated Gold, Silver, Bronze by the colour and the amount of pearling etc using ten criteria under the CIC system. Older bucks can have relatively tall antlers but gain weight as you discussed through thickness.

Here in the midwest, what you call an eye guard, we call a brow tine.

To quote Vinnie Barbarino, "I'm so confused!"
    😂
Really not much of a trophy hunter, but if one wants to "record" their harvest, states and record keeping orgs. like B&C have certification rules that must be followed. As for bragging rights, an actual yardstick in a photo is much better than pictures of the game in front of the hunter, because hunters come in varying sizes.
The "deer ear" estimation is pretty good for antler AND range estimation.
    Nice rundown on the jargon.👍👍

In New Zealand we count points like Texas does. We call the eye guards “bay tines’

  • @briankopp1369

In Florida a guess of the weight of the deer along with number of points is common. the variable in size of a 10 point could be over 200lbs in extreme cases. I saw a roughly 50lb 8 point in Corbett, and a 250lb 9 point in Lee.

In Central Europe they classify red stags by points and the weight of the scull….and according to that system can be classified as gold, silver or bronze medal

Excellent video Desert Dog. I’ll add that here in western NC I’ve never heard eye guards, here they are brow tines and yes everyone here counts them. Also a big spike buck with curved tines is a “cowhorn spike” and a buck with a lot of points but overall small spread is a “basket rack” 😂

How do hunters describe elk antlers? One time in Enterprise Oregon I saw a set of elk antlers that were so big, if you wired them to the front of my Uncle Bill's '49 Ford pickup, you would have to leave the side windows open due to the long tines at the ends of the antlers. ISYN! Thank you for posting!

Wyo resident here. We count the number of points on one side or each side. Like "6 point bull" or 5x6 respectively.

All too often hunters like to measure another hunter's ability and skill level by the size of the deer they have shot. Many times enormous bucks are killed by younger hunters with very little hunting experience who just happen to have access to better habitat than others do. In Georgia, a big bodied whitetail buck is 200lbs live weight. In other states they can be 300lbs or even close to 400lbs. Those who have a lot of money who can afford to go on expensive hunts to pristine areas known for huge deer can often score on some really exceptional deer but it doesn't mean they are a better hunter than someone who is restricted to their home state where the deer are much smaller.

I'm from Northeast Nebraska. We count every point on whitetails and muleys, and refer to them as 3x3 4x3 4x4 etc. I've hunted in Czhecia and Hungary for Roe and Red deer. It was all done by kilograms where I was.

I don't know anything about deer hunting. But I'm shocked that some clever person has not yet come up with a "water-volume-displacement" method for evaluating deer antlers?
It would be similar to the European method of simpling weighing the antlers, so I guess that weighing method is already sufficient. With this water method, you would get a large, clear tub of plain water with graduated milliliter marks on the side like a Pyrex glass. Then you would dunk each side of the pair of antlers into the water (up to the edge of the skull) and measure each side's displacement.
Then you would add both measurements to get the total displacement and therefore the "score."

In New Zealand if you can hang a ring on a tiny nub, it’s another point! We have big reds here and tiny delicious fellow. Also huge wapati, sika, sambar and rusa. We can hunt all year round with ethics being our only limits

Im an hour south of Lincoln, and we go by the point system here. If I hear 3x4 I automatically think mulie or elk.

So one of the deer on my wall is a 3 1/2 year old, if scored typically it would be a 6x6, however, it is a non-typical 9x12 with 4 points broke off and scored 195 3/8. Oddly enough I didn’t shoot this deer for its antlers, I shot it because it had a huge body…meat for the freezer. Age has absolutely nothing to do with antler size or spread. For me as a meat hunter, whether it a deer or elk, it’s about body mass.

I think this is a dumb comment (with no disrespect to commentator). The antlers are part of the memory. That's how you'll be able to help visualize the deer when sharing memories with your loved ones in the future.

DITTOS the first two comments. I hunt for trophy status. CONSEQUENTLY I HAVE SHOT MANY LESS DEER. I've had the time of my life in this adventure. I've experienced things people think are called romantic, long as your dressed warm in a chair att home. I've seen mules thrown off the ground when lightning strikes nearby. The wild places had better have your respect if you wanna be safe
