    The absolute best Slayer mod on UA-cam!
    To those who drop things: always set the BVD on a large towel so small parts don’t hit the counter and bounce away into oblivion.
    Instead of tweezers get a Kelly Forceps, also called a hemostat. They lock into place. If you want to use needle-nose pliers, slip a rubber band over the handles, so you have to use a little force to open the jaws. The rubber band tension will hold the jaws closed. If you are unlucky enough to lose a clip anyway, a piece of bendable wire the same thickness as the clip can be bent into a “U” shape, inserted into the holes in the valve housing, and twisted closed. It works great. I found my lost clip right after I invented this hack. Last, use magnetized screw driver heads as mentioned in the video.

    Awesome tutorial, super clear and was able to successfully do the mod yesterday. Just some notes from my experience - firstly when removing the microcontroller switch and screwing in the screws to the holes for safe keeping - don’t screw them in all the way - i accidentally screwed one of them in too far and it ended up locking the hot water knob in place! Second tip is just to be super careful when reinserting the pins, its pretty easy to accidentally lose grip and drop one which would be very difficult to retrieve. So don’t be in a rush and do it carefully. Oh also - i’m in Australia have a 920 machine, my front screws were anticlockwise to unscrew

    Hey! I've been watching your dual boiler videos for a while now and I really like them! keep them coming :)
    I also own a Breville dual boiler and I've done a few mods to it as well. My latest one was replacing the original pump and OPV for a brass one, after the upgrade I've been having way better pressure consistency and the machine has been running much quieter as well!. I also read that this might prolong the longevity of your machine as the components are solid brass material and not just cheap plastic.
    I am only telling you this because I know you are interested in doing mods and improving your gear. If you end up doing this mod, I'd be very keen to see you doing a video tutorial on this as the only video tutorial about it is not the best quality, a bit outdates and somewhat amateur.
    Anyway, thanks for the videos!
    Cheers from Australia

This video was the catalyst to get it done, so in preparation, I have ordered an O-ring kit and they should be here next week. In the meantime, I removed the 2 screws underneath the front panel, and as others have mentioned, I found them to be a normal right-hand thread and a non-JIS spec Philips head screwdriver works fine.

    Have to say that's one mod I'm yet to do to one of my BDB's. The PTFE tubes are the same on the 900 and the 920 so the process will be the same. If you have some food grade lubricant, lube up the o-rings as well and they'll last longer. I love how Breville called the triac board a cup warmer. It's really just the board that turns on the heaters for the steam and coffee boilers and the heater for the group head.The triacs generate a lot of heat and are cooled by transferring the heat through the heat sink into the top cover which we use to heat our cups. Pretty smart really. Oh and if you lose the little hitch pins, try shaking the machine upside down over a towel and if that doesn't work, look for '7/32" hitch pin external' online and grab some replacements. Looking forward to seeing what you do with this mod.

    Can't wait to see how you like it! I started using flow control on my E61 and found that it works really really well. I found the dial in tutorial on the Slayer YT channel to be really helpful for dialing it in (they also have a flow chart pdf for reference). I'm not sure if the 20s pre infusion and 30s brew time would convert 1:1 with a smaller portafilter but it may be a good starting spot.

    Went through the HB thread and also some of the older vids, but it didnt gave me much confidence to do it because i felt it wasnt clear enough. This is a great, great example of how to do a tutorial.
    Usually I dont leave comments but this is peak content making. Slayer mod is one of the main reason I bought into BDB and will definitely be referencing your video when I get around it.
    I also saw your comments on the reddit regarding existing tutorials and am glad you came around making a much better tutorial to help those that will experience the same issues as you did.
    One question I have is why the hot water spigot might leak. Based on your diagram, there is no longer any instruction for the solenoid to send water towards the hot water spigot, and with the silicon in place to exert negative pressure, so I’m not sure why some people are still experiencing leaking from the spigot

    • @GadgetsGearCoffee
      @GadgetsGearCoffee  Рік тому

      That one is a mystery I've been trying to solve and still don't have an answer to :/ unless my diagram is wrong but I used Phil Knight's old video for the water, went over all the videos I could find and HB threads to piece it together and confirm and it makes sense. I'm thinking maybe there is just too much pressure it wants to go through there anyway somehow?

    Excellent video.. thanks for sharing. I was able to 1-up you though ..referring to the dropped screw. I managed to drop one of the tiny hose clips into one of the deepest, darkest places inside the machine but thanks to a small telescopic magnet, I was able to retrieve it.

      nice!! you already had it on hand or you got the telescopic magnet from seeing my tutorial?

    • @bosephusjr
      @bosephusjr Рік тому

      ..was holding the clip with needle-nose pliers and was attempting to re-insert into the middle of the three ‘ports’ of the solenoid. The clip wasn’t perfectly aligned and when I applied pressure to get that satisfying click, it became dislodged & fell. I inherited a telescopic magnet from my dad & watched him use it countless times performing auto repair. Your video was more helpful than the others I’ve seen b/c the others do not mention disconnecting the switch which activates the solenoid at the knob. THANK YOU for that!!! Saved me from disassembling another time. Now I’m working on a mod w/ your slayer mod but keeping the function of the water spigot..waiting on parts to arrive & could be a bust but will be a fun experiment. Might paint the side panels like Eddie Van Halen’s guitar in the meantime 🤟🏼🤩 🎸
      Will keep you posted.. in the meantime, please keep posting the great content & sorry for the long reply. Cheers!

    I must have insanely large hands, or Breville has somehow made it so my machine hates me. I lost one of the clips, with it falling into what seemed like the group head.
    I really hope a cut down, and bent paperclip can handle some pressure, and that my machine doesn't kill me by shorting against a part of the case with the screw, or two that I've lost. Such is life.
    (After about 5 hours, and a lot of strife, it works. Hits up to 11 bar with a cleaning disk in a dual wall, and I don't hear spraying or arcing from the machine so success)

    So after being inspired by you, I decided to do the Slayer mod using your instructions (which are great btw). Relatively straightforward but the part where I struggled was plugging the hot water spigot. Mine still leaks a bit but the mod works. I think I'll end up capping mine off though. I plan to leave the valve fully open unless I want to do pressure profiling. Also I'm not sure what effects leaving it open and pushing pressure back into the distribution block for the hot water spigot and the steam wand is going to do long term but I don't feel like trying so I'll cap it off.

    15:53 this in fact is known as the ‘triac board’… its purpose is to control the heating elements in the boilers and manage power to them. Its placed on the top of the machine to make use of the space for heat dissipation from the heat sync. Doesn't at all have anything to do with being a ‘heater’ for the top of the machine; the boilers get really hot thus heating the top cover…. P.s love from the UK 🇬🇧

    Doesn’t look like you ever did the follow up video showing how you liked using the Slayer mod… I can’t see it anywhere. Great video though, I’m working on a friend’s 920, replaced all of his o-rings for him, and he needs some other things replaced, such as the thing you called “the cup tray heater” which is screwed to the top, that is actually not a heater, it’s called a Triac Board, and it controls the heating of the two boilers.
    If you get a leak from a perished o-ring on the steam boiler, very common, steam will leak up and cause malfunction of that triac board, and you will get weird behaviour or complete failure of the boilers, and then the thermal fuse will blow on the brew boiler if you don’t switch it off at the wall before it overheats. Yep, just switching the machine off won’t work, because the triac will allow the brew boiler to continue heating so long as it’s plugged into the wall outlet!

Pre-infusion time of 0 would mean full pressure the entire shot, just like the actual slayer, with pre-infusion controlled with flow, not pressure. Looking forward to your upcoming video. Also, I think this is the best video out there on how to complete the mod, so congrats!

    Didn't know the front screws were reverse threaded. Wonder why?

      I don't know, I tried to look it up. I know in some industries like car some screws are reversed threading because of the possibility of the time coming undone with time for important moving parts. But here? Not sure

      @@GadgetsGearCoffee the main reasons for reverse threads are when there are rotating parts. If your threaded part rotates in the direction of unscrewing it will unscrew itself. But in this case as there's no moving parts I'd say the main reason is to discourage people from opening the machine.
