I didn’t include “Doctorin The TARDIS” for three reasons: 1 - no cast member was involved, therefore it was “fan made” 2 - I hate the song 3 - my video, my rules 😂
Sorry. I thought it was great to excercise to keeping a beat and still being entertaining. I remember listening to that tape thru some difficult times.
I loved Doctorin the TARDIS. The punchy Who theme plus the samples of Davros and the Daleks... but hey, each to their own... Music video was rubbish though... Oh, and Orbital's version of the Who theme... love it. There's a video on UA-cam with them playing at Glastonbury and the last track of their set is the Who theme. It gets better because Matt Smith is up on stage with them, on keyboard too I might add. You know Doctor Who is cool when 100,000 people are screaming and cheering it on at a concert. Check it out.
You Kate are offically ACE. It sums up the very essence of Doctor Who and Pertwee. I WISH Capaldi and the other Doctors before and after him would do a new version for say Children In Need"? That would be so cool. Especially if it raised millions for good causes.
My favourite was a cover of the main theme by a band called Mankind. It was released in the late 70s, 1979 if I remember rightly. It was a more pop sounding version of the theme and did reasonably well in the charts. I really liked it.
Until you buy the 12" extended edition. (What was I thinking?!) Still, the two free inside 'Save Dr Who' stickers, kind'a made up for my John Fitton error purchase.
No mention of Orbital?! That track was AWESOME! They even had Matt Smith appear on stage with them when playing it a couple of years ago at Glastonbury.
Josh Snares. I understand what you're saying and why you restricted this to records made by cast members. However, records that are professionally made and official released I wouldn't call 'fan made'. I see what you're getting at and am not critising. I always think of fan made as being made unofficially by fans who are non professional.
You should have considered "Doctorin' The TARDIS" by The Time Lords a.k.a. The KLF. It reached no. 1 in the UK and the Top Ten in many other countries.
Roberta Tovey's record is utterly, UTTERLY adorable. The B side... that was something I was totally unaware of and, subsequently, wish I never knew. Have you heard the late 70s disco who theme? It's terrifyingly awful. I think it's on UA-cam somewhere, Tom Baker is on the cover of the LP. And Mr. Levine... oh how I am so grateful for the fact you saved episodes from destruction, but Doctor In Distress... fucking hell man.
It got more interesting when you remember that The KLF (the guys behind the song) also released a book about how to get a number 1 single after the song's success. Apparently if you followed all the steps and STILL didn't top the charts they would give you a refund XD
Interesting bit of trivia for you Josh. Doctor in Distress featured Justin Hayward and John Lodge from the Moody Blues, who were big Doctor Who fans. In 1969 when the Second Doctor was banished to Earth they wrote a song called "Gipsy (of a Strange and DistantTime)" which seems to be about the Doctor at that point in his story. They have denied this, but if you overlay that track and the original Delia Derbyshire theme (and adjust for the slightly different tempo) tune the structures match up and you could probably make a reasonable mashup of it. Its an interesting song and worth a listen.
Absolute best Doctor Who song is Three Guitars Mood Two - The Arthur Nelson Group (aka John Smith and the Common Men), the song Susan was listening to in An Unearthly Child - though, true, no cast members were in it. My second best is Among The Cybermen by Geezer Butler from the album "Black Science" (1997) by G/Z/R ...
This brings back some happy childhood memories. I owned the original single of Jon Pertwees song. I didn't think Dr in Distress was all that bad especially compared to some of the stuff that is around these days. I was surprised you didn't mention The TimeLords (KLF) single that was at number one for a few weeks.
I remember BBC Records put out the theme tune officially in the late 70s or maybe 1980. I saw it performed on Top of the Pops with a look a like dressed as Tom Baker.
Great job as always. Wait... the BBC turned a blind eye to the Jon Pertwee one? BBC, what have you done?? Dear god, man! We could've had such a contemporary song! The dark tones with Pertwee's narration in a neatly tuned remix is just what everyone would ask for Christmas. I'm sad now... I'll just leave and... cross the void beyond the mind after that. :'(
BBC never liked the idea of Who going musical ever. Keff McCulloch pitched his 1950's covers from Delta and the Bannermen as an album after production and the answer was a flat-out nope.
@@JayDragonarcProductions yeah, one would think so... but It's not a huge loss if Who isn't musically-inclined though, just a bit disappointing when there's so many incredible fanmade remixes on youtube as standalone songs and there's such potential in other media platforms too, like videogames, and we don't get to explore any of that in greater detail. At least there's still comics (the rebooted versions have been great), audios, animations, and the tv show keeps building up on its huge library of stories. But if they don't want to go musical (which could be understandable), videogames should be the next way to go imo. With the right team on-board, I think they could give more life to the world in the show but, alas, we have to wait for the right opportunity to arise... :(
Back in the 80's we were starving for anything Doctor Who related. When I got my hands on the Doctor in Distress album in the USA, I was ecstatic. I still have it today proudly in my record collection. It's cheezy, but I still love it as it brings me back to those early days of my obsession with Doctor Who. Remember this was a time when it was hard to collect anything Doctor Who. Hell, I even kept a photo I took of a billboard advertising Doctor Who on my local PBS Tucson Arizona station.
I wouldn't say the B-side to Tovey's single is 'disturbing', it's just a crush which many young teenagers have, longing for that older boy/young man or older girl/young woman. Nothing sinister about it. Most of us experienced it growing up.
The most interesting thing about ‘Doctor in Distress’? The musician who played keyboard for the song was a young musician by the name of Hans Zimmer. Needless to say, unlike Levine, he certainly wasn’t ruined by the song.
My favourite is the 12" version of "Dr Who" by Mankind. I sold my Doctor Who vinyl collection but I made CDs of the records. I now have the mankind CD which has been mastered from the vinyl. My raw unprocessed version sounds very different and I much prefer it.
My favorite Doctor Who related song has to be the one that opera singer sang to the shark in the Christmas special where Amy and Rory almost died on that spaceship... ;)
I agree with you I am the Doctor is a bop, and no I'm not ashamed to say i love doctor in distress and can play it all the way through on bass, keyboard and guitar!
What a trip down Memory Lane! Not always a good one but a trip nonetheless! I have the old BBC LP of music from the show where the entire "A Side" has an image of the Doctors. If you looked at the record while it was playing, it was almost motion sickness inducing!
I am The Doctor has always been my favourite Who song, being a child of the 80s Doctor in Distress holds a certain charm to me and I must say that every Christmas I do play the GoGo’s at least a couple of times.
Doctor In Distress is A joy to listen to! I don’t care if it’s old or catchy. I think it’s wonderful. I’d say it’s one of those “So Bad it’s Good” Songs X3
The Pertwee song still is fantastic! Other songs that I like that mention Who are probably "Loving the Eric Roberts Master" and The New Revamped version of "Doctor in Distress" from The Five Who Fans and... well... Orbital.
The “Not So Old” song is actually quite beautiful as a piece of music, I find. Certainly, if you tune out the queasy-making implications of the lyrics, I find it very nice to listen to. I think that (again, meaning aside) I like it best out of the lot. And while it certainly wouldn't be made today, it's not like the lyrics are *inherently* morall objectionable, they just lend themselves to that kind of reading. After all, while the opposite is wrong on many many levels, it is very much a fact of life that teenage girls can get crushes on grown men (movie stars and singers being the classic example). And the girl is pleading through his song because the man, quite rightly, has told her "no way, you're much too young, sorry" when she asked. She is, what's more, pleading in a way that makes it clear she understands that it would be wrong for them to get together *now*. At any rate, it's not quite the same thing, but shouldn't you have mentioned the times that the new series' soundtracks included songs? “The Long Song” from ‘The Rings of Akhaten’ and “Silence is All You Know” in ‘A Christmas Carol’ come to mind, couldn't tell you if there are any more. (The various choral themes like the Daleks' music or “Vale Decem” shouldn't count, I think.)
My favorite Doctor Who inspired - INSPIRED, not performed by any cast member - is Saved By Zero by The Fixx. Back in 1983 when it came out, The Fixx were going to play at a college in a nearby town. One of the DJs for the major rock and roll station in my city was going to go and interview them, and was wanting to ask some questions from fans. I managed to call in, probably because they weren't that big a deal in Central Texas, and told him that I had heard that Saved By Zero was inspired by Doctor Who. He asked how I had heard that, and I told him there was a rumor in the Whovian fandom that it was. He told me that I should probably call back the next week because he didn't think that would make it on air. When I called him back the following week, he said he asked. He said the band member he was interviewing seemed startled by the question way out here in Texas. He then said that it was, indeed, inspired by Doctor Who.
There's a song called Vashta Nerada by a band named Traffic Experiment. It's basically just a Pink Floyd-esque cover of the main theme. Then there's the band Chameleon Circuit with their two whole albums of DW themed songs. And of course Doctorin' the Tardis, but everyone already mentioned that. I know these are fanmade, and as such you wouldn't have included them anyway, but i really love them all!
It’s fan made but I adore Richard B Brookes’ cover of Doctor in Distress relating to the 2016 hiatus Featuring lyrics like “La la la la Patrick Ness” and “Who’s your favourite Doctor? Mine is Eccleston”
Although not explicitly about the show, the Davies era had a handful of vocal songs performed by Neil Hannon and Yamit Mamo. And though they're fanmade, Chameleon Circuit has made a few bangers (admittedly among many sure).
If we’re talking Doctor Who music then there’s two I HAVE to mention: 1) The third part of Big Finish’s Doctor Who and The Pirates has lots of songs in it with Colin Baker singing. It’s cheesy but fun pirate shanties. 2) Even though they’re not officially by the BBC, you have to check out President Romana here on UA-cam. Personally my favourite songs from her are Last Words, Don’t Tell Me the Rules, Thirteen and A Time Lord’s Trial
4:35 I forgotten Sally Thomsett participated in this song She’s one of my favourite actresses’, I know her best from one of my favourite British Comedy shows “ Man About The House”
I really like the Pertwee song. I have it on my iPod. Then again, I also have a track that is every theme from every Doctor (just missing the latest one) all jammed together to make about 15 minutes of theme song. I didn't know about the other three, though. You continue to surprise and delight me with your eclectic DW knowledge! :-)
The best hit Doctor Who song is, of course, the Chromophone Band. It's such a bop, it made me forget about the totalitarian crab monsters which force me to slave away mining gas 22 hours a day!
Right, I'm gonna go through this here: Go-Gos... meh. Tovey - Actually like this just for the fact that it's meant to be a lovely not-so-serious tribute to Who. The rest all tried to be serious, this is just meant to be a nice musical jaunt. Frazer - It's not a good song at all, but I wonder what he could've done if he had been given a good tune. Who is the Doctor? - Funnily enough, I remember this well. Pertwee's confidence, the lyrics may not make all of good sense but he sells them. And the instrumentation is fab. IIRC John Levene also did a tribute version of it many years back to honour Jon at a con. Doctor in Distress - The singing and lyrics is terrible as is the video... but on the plus side, we got five wonderful seconds of Ainley and Courtney sitting next to each other. And the instrumentation isn't all that bad in isolation (gotta give Hans Zimmer his credit there) so not good but not as bad as people make it out. The worst Doctor Who inspired song of all-time? The Nerf Herder song that Disney XD used for their Doctor Who trailers. That song melted my brain. Best song? Oh, I don't know... I want to say Who is the Doctor? but as people point out, it's less a song and more a music instrumentation with narration.
After watching your video, I decided to search for Doctor Who songs and found two songs that are bizarrely catchy: "Jo is Making a Thing" and "We Killed the Doctor Dead!". They're from the Big Finish story "The Scorchies" in the Companion Chronicles audio range where Jo Grant takes on the Scorchies, an alien race that inhabit puppets and use their television show to travel from planet to planet and destroy or enslave the native populations. The songs and lyrics were composed by Richard Fox and Lauren Yason, and sung by Jo Grant herself Katy Manning and Melvyn Hayes who plays the Scorchies.
The CLASH- "remote control" (1977) with the lines "gonna be a Dalek" and "I obey!". (At the time Doctor Who was not running Stateside- we Yanks didn't know what that meant.)
Doctor Who the show doesn't have a theme song. Jon makes a song out of it but it's not one originally. I love Jon's track, Orbital"s is good too. As is Geezer Butler's Among the Cybermen.
Another great video, Josh, I seriously love these latest videos where you'd looking into different areas of the Doctor Who merchandise (maybe an overview of the Target novels, for years before VHS and DVDs, the only way us vintage fans could relive early adventures). I'm not a fan of Doctor Who-related records either, they're pretty terrible, yet fascinating at the same time. (By the way, I'm too lazy to do some quick Google research, but I'm guessing the record cover shown at 3:08 is from a later re-release - it has the 1980's era DW logo despite the song being from the Pertwee era, and it has "BBC Records and & Tapes" on it, despite the Beeb not originally being involved with it. Also - look carefully - the blue light on top of the TARDIS is missing. ...Jus' sayin')
I except your reason for not liking “Doctorin The TARDIS” But have you ever seen it played at a convention party. It is up there with YMCA, Time Warp and all the other cult dance songs, Watching 30 odd men & women in costume, Stumping up & down Clapping their Hands and yelling HEY, with this song playing, is mind blowing. This is why it is a fan favourite
I actually have a bit of appreciation for "Doctor In Distress"...mind you, I'm not saying the song's any good, it's downright every bit as awful as people claim it to be...but I admire that such an effort was undertaken to save the program from the BBC who was stopping at nothing to kill it off... And thanks to that plus other efforts, we wound up with another four seasons...that's well more than what Star Trek's oft-lauded letter-writing campaign managed to get for TOS (it garnered just ONE more season from that...) So...I say F for quality but A for effort on that one... Perhaps I'm the only one who thinks this way but eh....
Still weird to think that Hans Zimmer contributed to Doctor in Distress. Played the entire thing on a Fairlight II synthesisor - which (fun fact) was the same brand of synth used to compose the Terminator 2 Judgement Day soundtrack.
I love the Pertwee version of the theme. I only wish they had used it on the actual show. I am guilty of getting a copy of doctor in distress, it was awful but the money did go to charity. Side note, I loved Orbital's cover version of the theme.
And what about the white label rave track. 92. Will have to look it up. It was played at raindance and other big raves like fantasia etc. Was a popular choon
No mention of Doctorin the Tardis? Number one single in 1988. Samples from the Gensis of the Daleks LP means the single technically features recordings by cast members.
I didn’t include “Doctorin The TARDIS” for three reasons:

1) The third part of Big Finish’s Doctor Who and The Pirates has lots of songs in it with Colin Baker singing.
4:35 I forgotten Sally Thomsett participated in this song
She’s one of my favourite actresses’, I know her best from one of my favourite British Comedy shows “ Man About The House”
Blimey, you really find some great avenues to sift through - absolutely digging your works thank you!! :)
Love this video!!! :D
'I Am The Doctor' by Jon Pertwee is 100% my fave of these. I want to check out Frazer's songs after seeing this.
I do agree, but the best out of the bin is Jon Pertwee's ''Am I The Doctor?'' I am still trying to find out of the Master Tape exists anymore.
The best hit Doctor Who song is, of course, the Chromophone Band. It's such a bop, it made me forget about the totalitarian crab monsters which force me to slave away mining gas 22 hours a day!
DOCTOR IN DISTRESS!!!! LETS ALL ANSWER HIS S.O.S!
My Head... my Head!
I really hope to see a Doctor Who musical episode someday.
And of course, it must end with the Doctor singing Jon Pertwee song.
i personally think some of the intro themes could warrant the charts anyway (noting 7 and 12, maybe 11)
Right, I'm gonna go through this here:
Go-Gos...
I absolutely love Doctor in Distress. I think it's my Doctor Who related song in my opinion
"For the kids watching, a record has two sides..." Lol! 😂😂😂
🤣🤣🤣 (ditto!)
How could you miss out Doctorin' the TARDIS -- easily the best of them all and actually quite a good song in its own right.
I think the song itself is fine, it’s association with Gary Glitter is the reason I didn’t include it at the time
At least the story soundtracks more than make up for these. Especially the 11 disc 50th anniversary soundtrack and The Invasion.
I kinda like Doctor in Distress. (It’s chorus is catchy ) Just needs a cover I think, one singer and the current Doctor.
I burst out laughing with "For the kids watching: A record has two sides".
Doctorin' the Tardis...the absolute best Doctor Who song!!!!!
I actually have a bit of appreciation for "Doctor In Distress"...mind you, I'm not saying the song's any good, it's downright every bit as awful as people claim it to be...but I admire that such an effort was undertaken to save the program from the BBC who was stopping at nothing to kill it off...
And thanks to that plus other efforts, we wound up with another four seasons...that's well more than what Star Trek's oft-lauded letter-writing campaign managed to get for TOS (it garnered just ONE more season from that...)
So...I say F for quality but A for effort on that one...
Perhaps I'm the only one who thinks this way but eh....
Who is the Doctor is my Fucking Jam! Also I love your new Profile pic Josh worthy of a title sequence!
The single greatest song ever made!
My favourite is the Five Who Fans rendition of Doctor in distress
Totally going to check out that Roberta record 🤣🤣
I think Jon Pertwee's version of the Doctor Who theme is more kick-ass in my opinion. It's my favorite by far than any of the others.
Thanks again.... everyone is probably screaming Doctorin The TARDIS.😁
And that is why the 3rd Doctor IS THE DOCTOR!!! He has a song that says so lol
I like the Pertwee one and Doctor in distress. I will not apologize.
Great to see Hazell Dean singing.
Ive always loved the one Jon pertwee did
I didn’t know that some doctor who members made a couple of songs :)
Still weird to think that Hans Zimmer contributed to Doctor in Distress. Played the entire thing on a Fairlight II synthesisor - which (fun fact) was the same brand of synth used to compose the Terminator 2 Judgement Day soundtrack.
Sophie Aldred is really out here being that girl we knew she was
no i agree, Who Is The Doctor is a bop.
I like the first four......but the Pertwee one is obviously the best lmao
No mention of Doctorin the Tardis? Number one single in 1988. Samples from the Gensis of the Daleks LP means the single technically features recordings by cast members.
Id like a lower pitch doctor in distress like the one you used
Doctorin' the Tardis is pretty good I think.
3:18 Would that be the same Rupert Hine who in the '80s and '90s produced The Fixx, Rush and Stevie Nicks?
What's your opinion on Rottersand's "Exterminate, Anihilate, Destroy"?
It's a dance track so not quite a "song" per say.
