I think many people would like to know that this train follows the route of the Garnkirk and Glasgow Railway, one of the first in Scotland (opened 1831), between just after Barnhill station (off to the left after Springburn) at the site of Germiston Low Junction (where disused lines join from the right at about 14.35) and Coatbridge outskirts at Gartsherrie (at about 29.20). This route was also used by trains from Glasgow Buchanan Street railway station which closed in 1966. If you were going to Oban, Dundee, Aberdeen or Inverness prior to that date, this is how you would have left Glasgow. These trains would have peeled off to the left at Gartcosh Junction (at 25.38). It was also used by the Caledonian Railway for their first Anglo-Scottish services prior to the opening of Southside Station in 1849 (from Coatbridge Junction at 34.58). The surroundings would have looked very different at all times - lots of other railways and sidings, with industrial premises early on and later with vast areas of derelict land. The trees are relatively recent and you'll notice that all the housing is too!
The electrification of the weed infested line at 28.29 is interesting, but I take it that it is used as a siding for the container depot. The rails are shining so they must be used. I've never seen Coatbridge Central station before. Look at it now - it used to have services to London Euston up until the 1980s (from Inverness and Aberdeen so about 2 per day)!
I loved the video. Don't get too down about the criticism - it sounds a bit "holier than thou" to me. People do like to know the stations, though! Thanks for showing very unpublicised lengths of track which are very important not only in the history of Scottish railways, but railways worldwide. Thanks again!

This was a great experience! Interestingly, when I lived in Glasgow in the eighties, only _one_ of the intermediate stations we passed through (Coatbridge Central) existed, and it had an extremely limited service -- and now it's all electrified and receiving regular service! For all we complain about ScotRail, they've done a great job there.

Unless you live on the Kilmarnock Dumfries line. Not so good. Our stock was described as heritage on a video of the Hope Valley line.

@@wilsonflood4393 Oh yes, I saw that! I was living on the East Kilbride line when that was introduced! Much better than what we had before, but getting a little long in the tooth these days. Eventually the electrification will spread south... but even then you'll probably get something cascaded rather than something new.

Awesome video, West Central belt, through some of the most populated parts of Scotland yet most of it looks quite rural thanks to the lineside growth, really enjoyed seeing my local area from a very different perspective…

Thanks for an excellent video showing some of the lesser-known parts of the Glasgow rail network. Yes, captions would have been nice but their absence isn't the end of the world and I'd much rather have the video with no captions than not have it at all. One thing it does show is what a circuitous route the train has to take. By road and in reasonable traffic conditions you can get from Bishopbriggs to Bridgeton in about half an hour!

    • @ol1ver49

See the replies to @gerrykeenan for details. Interestingly the ride uses two sections that are freight-only - the single track and obviously only used track between Garnkirk and Coatbridge Central, and the curve from there to Kirkwood. Interestingly, both electrified as if for future passenger use.
