  • www.WyndhamEstateNewport.com - Newport, Rhode Island, nucleus of the Gilded Age and home to the Vanderbilts, Astors and Wideners, has an opening in the birthplace of luxury - Wyndham Estate.
Wyndham Estate, constructed contemporaneously in 1890 alongside famed "cottages" The Breakers, Rosecliff and Marble House, is a resplendent, 2 1/2-story, ashlar stone Baronial designed by architect William Ralph Emerson, a cousin of Ralph Waldo Emerson. It was built for Rose Anne Grosvenor, a philanthropist from Providence. Newly restored, Wyndham Estate brings the era of opulence into the modern age.
Boasting 12,175 square feet and three floors of living space on 11.72 acres of property, Wyndham Estate sits atop the highest point of Newport - the crown jewel of a golden city.
Seven bedrooms, seven bathrooms, nine fireplaces, tiger oak hardwood and white Carera marble floors, a brand new 456,000 BTU Buderus G315 boiler, library, grand ballroom, home theatre and manmade pond with a three tier waterfall are among the unique amenities of this regal manor.
Wyndham Estate lies in the very heart of Newport, Rhode Island, only one half mile from both the New York Yacht Club and Newport Country Club. Newport houses six elementary schools, Salve Regina College and the United States Naval War Cottage. It is home to the International Tennis Hall of Fame and the George Donnelly Sunset League, America's Oldest amateur baseball league.

I was taken around by the lady of the house in the late 80's, early 90's. She had just had major work done and she also knew that i have been in many private homes and told her that her home was breathtaking. Perfectly done with a very comfortable livable feel.

What a gift of a curated home. I love Newport ! This I did not know about . What a find above town. Grace and family is in every room. I hope I can visit some day. Thanks for showing us this inspired home .

The antebellum charm of this once gracious home..the patina of which tells the story of a gilded age and the people who basked in them is utterly lost..everything looks so new and overdone one wonders how it really looked like in it's glorious heydays..

Updates killed it, homes like this need to stay traditional

I was excited at first, then I saw all the drywall, recessed lights, clean lines, new wood floors, vinyl windows etc., etc. The place should have been restored instead of mutilated. It's not a condo - So, so sad.

What the heck happened to the kitchen walls and flooring? It’s like a domino explosion mixed with my grandma’s sofa cover...

Holy cow, checkered kitchen floors with flowered wallpaper? I think my 5-year-old granddaughter was their interior designer.

I used to ride my bike past this house when I lived on Harrison Avenue. It reminded me of the castle in Ireland where I met my husband.

Beautiful house and grounds. I hated the wallpaper and black and white tile floor in the humongous kitchen area. I loved the bathroom with the huge shower. The other one looked like it had a pink sink in it, so I assumed it had lots of pink in it and I hate pink. How much does this gem cost? It really doesn't matter because never in my wildest dreams could I ever afford it. It is absolutely gorgeous!!!

I live in this community part-time ( spouse born & raised in Newport , )and I've walked past this home many times. The home, grounds and entire surrounding area are breath taking. It's truly a life/dwelling for the very wealthy but the history in this home & the many mansions in this community is astounding when you learn about it. 3 million people from all over the world visit Newport each year...it's an amazing part of history.

Amazing! We use to play paintball in this house. There also was a coblestone statue at the enterance at the driveway and I can remember being a kid and we would stop and drop little rocks on it. It sounded like rain.

Gorgeous. I see negative comments about the updates. I am wondering if the updates were done for energy efficiency reasons or simply because the existing areas were decaying? I'm sure it is challenging to stay with the same exact materials that were used at construction.

What a shame that they ruined it by upgrades. I would rather have seen it before in its hay day. After several trips in my lifetime to see the Newport mansions I do not feel I have missed out as this is not a mansion nor is it remarkable. It is nothing compared to the historically preserved properties on the tour.

Why would you ruin what was once a great house and modernize to a want to be, this house looks when people who have no taste build a modern brand new home and then decorate the inside as if it was a mansion from the gilded age.

Nice work was done in the renovation, however, the house lost a bit of it's personality with a bunch of monotonous rooms that look all alike on the first floor. It would make a great difference if some colors were added in different rooms to uplift the decor.

I love the tasteful renovations done on this house. I especially love the kitchen. And is that a breakfast/morning room with built in desk just off the kitchen? I love that checkerboard floor. I will have fantasies of living in this gorgeous house for a long time.

Blame the owners for the horrible updates. The workers/contractors do what the owners want. Sadly, some people are not interested in the preservation of historical homes Like that saying, “out with the old and in with the new”. However, sometimes the “new” is not always the best- - just look at that horrible black and white checkerboard floor in the kitchen 😝. But like they say, “to each his own.

The “new” master bathroom is horrendous- won’t even comment on the kitchen. The awkward home office with plywood shelves ..it’s so poorly done .. Immediately I feel like I’m in a new build thats been poorly executed in the god forsaken 90’s. Arghhh it’s sooooo terrible!

As the saying goes, hire a professional. The remodel/renovations were def not the quality or as intricate as the original design. How easy it would haven to copy moldings and accoutrements of the original house.
