  • What does Juneteenth Mean To You? We asked library patrons and staff to share their thoughts about the Juneteenth holiday, commemorating the end of slavery in the United States.
On June 19, 1865, enslaved African Americans in Texas were told they were free, two-and a half years after the Emancipation Proclamation Act of 1863. A century and a half later, people across the United States continue to celebrate the day, which is now a federal holiday. Learn more by visiting your local library or www.lapl.org
Produced as a collaboration between the Social Science Department and the Octavia Lab of the Los Angeles Public Library.
