I too thought the sound was good. I think searching for the perfect sound will be difficult, but in all honesty, I like the fact there was a bit of background noise as it made me/us feel like we were riding along with you as opposed to have a perfect sound which could have been created in a studio and dubbed over.

I bought one of those. Sold it at a loss cause audio quality was horrible not to mention editing that footage was a bit more difficult. Hope you have better luck with yours. When mounting the camera I use sugru glue. Stuff will hold forever and never falls off like those 3m pads do. The phone mount your using has no vibration dampener or does it? May break your phone camera if it vibrates too much. Okay I’m out lol. Take care ride safe

Love your videos!!!!!! The black lines are for stereo in puts. The adaptor you are using will not help. The sound you are hearing is wind noise. Try putting a little more foam around the mic or moving the mic around. You can also use a fan if it is strong enough to simulate the wind on the road for testing it out.

I understand your frustration with the audio, I have been through the same stuff. Here’s what I did and it resulted in the best audio I’ve ever had….and it was cheap!
I bought a set of wired Apple earbuds, then I cut off the right earbud and taped up the end of the wire. The left earbud also has the button inline that controls the volume and allows you to answer/end calls. I bought a pack of craft fur sheets from Hobby Lobby, it’s imitation fur….faux fur. I took the thickest sheet of fur and cut a tiny rectangle off of it about 1 inch x 1-1/2 inches. Then I wrapped the tiny rectangle of fur around the volume button (the microphone is sealed inside this button) so it would act as a dead-cat to keep the wind noise out. I could have also removed the left earbud and only have a wire with the tiny microphone, but I use the left earbud when I’m using my map on my phone so I can hear the directions.
Anyhow, this set up work’s phenomenally! It works (and sounds) better than ANY of my multiple microphones…including the Rode Microphones I have! I have no idea why Apple uses such an amazing microphone in these earbuds and only charges $29 for them…..because the audio from that tiny microphone sounds like it’s in the $300 price range!
This set up if very very tiny and it hides very well inside of my helmet…I just have to be careful not to mount it directly in front of my mouth because it picks up every breath I take. I mount it beside my left cheek and I can’t feel it whatsoever.
Anyhow, I hope this gives you another idea to try….
    Good luck and God bless!
    Sincerely,
    Donnie Miller

That phone mount and case are cool- I've never used my phone while on the bike, and I hate using it for GPS, because it just obliterates the battery.
As far as the audio, at low speeds your sound is fine; at highway speeds you may not ever completely get rid of the wind noise short of going to a totally separate audio recorder with a really good external mic and editing them together. But even with the wind noise at highway speeds, your voice is totally audible, and there's no problem understanding you. It's a motovlog- don't stress out too much about a little wind and engine noise. If you run into sections where your voice audio is unintelligible and you really wanted to get an important point across, voice over it and say so. We understand. Thanks for working so hard to fine tune your setup; your videos are awesome, and we enjoy them!

hi, I have had similar issues with getting a mic setup for my helmet. I use DJI Action camera which you have to remove the access door to get to the usb-c port, plug in an adapter, use another plug adapter taking it from a 3 section jack to a 2 section jack that is now extending rearward toward the front of your helmet by almost 3"... and making it very unworkable. However, I did finally find a mic for the action camera that is a direct usb-c plug in. Works great!!! just open the access door, plug it in, and all the adapters are gone. Very happy that I found this solution.

Part of my job in the Air Force was working/modifying pilots flying gear. Every pilot would have a custom poured helmet for their heads only. We'd basically stripped government issue pilots down to bare shells, make custom ear pads with the audio inside the foam. Everything wrapped in deerskin leather, I loved pouring new helmets and never had a single pilot that was not " I can't believe what I've been missing!" That's a awesome looking helmet Jess. I'm not familiar with go pros and audio stuff for helmets. But I do enjoy watching you just climbing and climbing up the task you set in front of yourself with what you do here. Your videos are always fun, I just enjoyed the best 16 Oz. Coors I've had in awhile! Your video on the lowrider st got me in the want a new bike mode! I wish I could afford one, im just lucky to be on one at all. You did a review of the softail standard fxst I watched. I put a soundbar on mine when I got it in 2020, a windshield, new seat and tall backrest on, nothing fancy but the 107 is fast on that light frame. I miss my electraglide at times and my first bike, a 2006 Heritage off the floor. But it's all good and as it should be. You coming through Eureka Springs this summer??? 🙏

Using 2 pieces of 3M tape doesn’t really help much. It just makes it stand off the helmet that much more.
If you want it to stay, use some 3M adhesive promoter. I use it every time I have to use 3M for a project. I usually do 3-4 coats then stick it on. It will never come off unless you want it to.

Stacking can actually weaken the bound as they are not meant to adhere to each other. Promoter is the way to go with any adhesive that uses it. I’ve CA glued a brick to a wall that you can stand on, the trick is to use a good quality promoter. Also, it usually makes the adhesive set up faster as well.

The bands separate the circuits, or wires.it’s a thin insulator that keeps them from contacting and shorting.
One band indicates a positive and a ground. Mono speakers usually have the band closer to the end. A microphone plug should have the band closer to base than the tip. Two wires is all a microphone needs. As they typically only use one channel. The rest of the wires would be grounded if you use an adapter.
Two bands separates the plug into three contacts, they are typically stereo plugs. Left, right, and ground. It’s very rare to find a mono speaker and microphone version but they can be identified by having different bands. The stereo speaker will have two bands closer to the tip. Mono speaker with microphone will have one band close to the top and one closer to the base.
Three bands or four contacts would likely be left, right and a single wire microphone with a ground.
Ground is always the contact closest to the base of the plug.
Typically there is no issue with the ground contacting extra unused contacts or wires. Or empty contacts touching the ground. A stereo with microphone to a microphone can cause issues as the two speaker contacts may be shorter together which would result in low sound, typically.
They come on 1/16, 1/8, and 1/4 sizes, typically. 1/8 is most common.
With that, you are now an expert on phone connectors.

I feel you. I'm currently on the phone with GoPro support to get yet another replacement Media Mod. This is the second time I've had the 3.5mm mic port fail. I seem to get nothing but intermittent popping and mute audio no matter what mic I use or what software settings on the cameras. So frustrating! There is a huge opportunity for someone to solve the action camera/helmet audio problem. As far as I can tell, there are currently no good solutions out there. Everything is complex/expensive/unreliable. The only way I've found to get decent audio is with a standalone digital audio recorder, but then you have the hassle of trying to sync in post, and the hassle of trying to start/stop yet another device and create sync points. Depending on the type of riding you are trying to capture, this can be difficult to impossible. Ugh!

Everyone talks about Rockform on UA-cam... but still not sticking anything on my phone or using a case to hold it. I got a holder that holds the phone fine, just tighten with a thumb screw so it stays firm... mounted on a ram mount ball... and has built in wireless charging. Works great, and was like $20 and don't have to worry about my phone battery or wires to plug in or anything.

  • @SLO-Ride

I use a cheap gaming mic (Amazon has hundreds of them), and a cat's butt for the wind. Plugs right into the Go-Pro Media Mod. The only issue I had, was the mic has a rather stiff boom (adjustable headset style). I ran the boom between the Ruroc chin skirt and the helmet edge, to use as much of the short boom as I could. I then secured it with two small holes in the chin skirt wall, through which I used a tiny zip-tie to secure it nice and snug. I was using a Purple Panda mic, but that 5 feet of wire just would not stay tucked in the helmet. I have to keep the chin vent closed, because enough wind noise gets through, but my 3.0 doesn't get that hot anyway (not that I can't crack the visor for cool air). I think the hunt for the "best" helmet mic will go on as long as there are different opinions on what is good audio!

That Insta360 action camera looks awesome! I had no idea they had a modular style cameras like that and I think it's a brilliant idea! That being said however, there's a few things to note about the GoPro's that many people may not realize which drastically reduces the number of audio-related issues and failures.
    1. When using the audio plug-in adapter, do NOT use the instant record button (Blockhead mentions this in his Atlas 4.0 review video). Rather instead, ALWAYS power on the camera FIRST, then press the record button. This greatly reduces the audio issues or the camera not recognizing that the audio adapter is connected.
    2. After each time using the GoPro and after copying your footage onto your computer/laptop/HDD, ALWAYS format the MicroSD card on the GoPro BEFORE recording ANY new video. This resets the MicroSD card and will avoid you getting random I/O errors or record errors after 10-20 minutes of recording then suddenly losing video or having it corrupted.
    3. Another great tip that Blockhead also mentioned, when starting a new recording session, take a 5-second 'test' clip and record/playback to verify audio is working properly.
By following these 3 quick steps each and every time you use a GoPro, this will DRASTICALLY reduce the number of audio related issues and failures. Again nothing is perfect and of course there's no guarantee however it's all about minimizing the risk of having any potential issues. I hope this helps someone as these quick tips have worked great for me so far! Enjoy and thanks Jess for another great video!

Good info but totally unacceptable. If you had to do that for reliable audio/video on any phone that phone would get toasted in the media. Go-Pro is riding on it's name and the ride will come to a quick end if they don't solve ALL issues in the next model release.

I also was informed, by a real Go Pro guy, that if you are using an external mic, to turn on power first--then record. "Instant record" works fine with the internal mic. Apparently, there is some conflict with the programming trying to decide which mic to use, since it is set up to only run the internal mic. I also always format the SD card after transferring all the video, out of habit from using digital SLR cameras.

UGH, the technology struggle is real! I tried about 4 other setups and in my experience in the professional audio/visual world, a lot of the lav mics just get overdriven by the road noise which makes them sound terrible. I'm using the exact same mic setup with the Sena mic and adapter on my Hero 8, and I ended up taping the connectors together which seems to really help avoid issues with disconnections. I tried the Xbox mic after finding it in one of your early videos and it just didn't work for me sadly, and like you said, it's far too short! Thanks for making this video, I always like to see what other people use for their moto vlog setup.

Thanks, enjoyed the Insta360 One RS overview. I'll compare it to some other GoPro alternatives for my next camera. I would be unhappy with the wind noise too, but the audio wasn't too bad, for me I like a little more bass. Hope you get it all worked out!
I think those black lines you mentioned in the mic plugs are spacers for the electrical contacts. I'm sure you already know but in case a novice reader is out here one spacer is for a mono mic and two spacers is a stereo mic, and the third metal contact is for ground. Oh just have Jordan use his calipers to measure the diameter of the plug.

With the mic, 1 line is for mono audio, 2 is the separator for stereo, so you have left and right recording. Definitely do not use a 2.5mm to 3.5mm adaptor as movement in that can cause static. I'm in the process of trailing a few lavalier mics, and have found depending on the mic, placement in your helmet has a lot to do with it.

The Rurock helmetts are not know for being very quiet. They often get dinged for how noisy they are. That being said, if it came with a chin curtain, make sure that is installed and it may make things a bit quieter. I normally don't ride with a chin curtain because I find it makes the helmet a bit hotter and I am in south Texas. I hope that helps.

Ruroc's do come with a chin skirt. It's a bit of fabric, rather than a mesh or net, and extends a little further in than most. Mine just barely tickles my chin!

The single black ring on the one mic indicates a mono mic. 2 rings are stereo, and 3 rings are 2 way communication (rather than just input like a microphone, the 3 rings are input and output). You should try the single ring mic - it'll probably sound OK, and it's not like you're recording music while you're on your motorcycle. Good luck!

TASCAM DR-10L with a Sennheiser MKE 2-EW Gold is the dream audio setup if you are willing to deal with syncing up audio in post. You might even find that Sennheiser MKE 2-EW Gold working much better with the Insta. I have gone through quite the trial and error with mics and it’s a brutally frustrating process.

All I've ever wanted is to be able to take my helmet off and not be attached to a bunch or cables and batteries lol. Maybe one day in the future I'll resort to external audio. But I wish I didn't have to! Too bad things just don't work they way they're supposed to haha

@@HerTwoWheels I agree. Maybe just try the better mic into the insta, you might be surprised at how good the insta handles audio with a more premium mic. It sucks to spend that kind of money on a mic but mine has held up well since 12/18/20 (just looked up when I bought it). I will never go back to less of a mic for motovlogs even though the mic costs just as much as a camera lol.

Gopro hero 8 troubleshooting if you haven't already. Try buying a completely new battery. Make sure SD card is exactly what goprp recommend. Maybe go Mediamod.
Gopro hero 9 is much reliable granted what I mentioned about GP8 has been done also.

Maybe replace the GP8 with a GP10 as last resort.

Did you use the same type of mic that you usually use on the GoPro? Maybe that could be affecting the audio. Also, if the GoPro adapter fits onto the Insta360, it could possibly help improve the audio. And there's always the option for an external recorder for better audio, but that would just add more bulk to your setup.

When 90 percent of people are watching on their phones all that really matters is the audio and video match up and you don't sound underwater. Every creator I have ever watched I feel like eventually gets caught up in this quality issue and at least for me it all sounds the same. Just use whatever is reliable.

I laughed when I saw your title and thumbnail. You... drama queen! lol
A few months back, I saw several videos about the new RoozRock (no I'm not an Aussie, but I know they'll like my change of the brand name there) Alpha 4.0 and they all said it fit really tight.
The RS battery is at least twice as big, that's got to translate to quite a bit more recording time. And more space in your bag for a spare battery, but you won't need as many spares. Me likey. It is a larger camera overall, but I'm not sure that matters other than perhaps weight. I use a Hero10 mostly (and a 7, but my helmet cam is the 10) and I use the media mod, so there's no huge dongle like with the Hero 8 and prior. I use a One X2 cam and the tiny screen makes it difficult to see if it's on and recording and the buttons to power up are impossible to feel in gloves. I've started to adjust the angle I keep the camera at (since it almost doesn't matter WHAT angle it's at) so I can SEE the button, but I also need to see the front. We'll see how that goes. Any tips would be appreciated.
BTW, I totally agree about the red and black thing. Hey, it matches your new camera! Unexpected fashion coord!
The Alpha is not well suited to a chin mount due to that large grid for venting. It provides less contact surface for the adhesive. You went to the side (as I would have), but that requires an extra mount piece or two to get the camera positioned properly. I had my camera like 1/8" left of center when I mounted it. Didn't notice until later and of course, I OCD'd about it for a while. The mount was coming loose, so I just pulled the adhesive off, used a heat gun to reheat and was more attentive to centering it. It's been 3 days and I haven't ridden with a camera yet, but it's holding solid, so we're good for a 5000 mile ride, right? ;)
I never mount my phone to my bars. I want the phone on me if I happen to dump. Especially if I'm doing off road as I might be separated from the bike a bit and not able to get to it, move, etc. Keeping the phone on me means (providing I have a signal), I always have that ripcord. There are other options for that safety like Garmin InReach or Spot, etc. For navigation, I've used Garmin Zumos for about 15 years. They are the best in the business IMO, although they have their problems and the BaseCamp software I use on the Mac can be frustration for this computer nerd. Plus they've stopped developing it. I know many people use phone mounts and their phone for routing, I just have got into the habit of separating that and it works well for me. Added crash bonus, if the GPS gets mangled, I'm bummed. But I still have my phone. Downside? Extra cost for the GPS.
Re: vibes on the Harley. Appa has a rubber mounted engine. It probably shakes like a paint mixer at idle, but smooths out real quick once you accelerate like my Road King does. Not sure about your Dyna. The Boxer engine on the BMW is not typically super vibey and the pistons are 180 degrees apart which provides more balance than a 45 degree V-twin. I only mind the Harley shake at LONG stop lights.
All cities hate motorcyclists. How often do you get to a light where there's no one but you and you wait. And wait. And wait.
I watch most UA-cam on my AppleTV, not on my phone with earbuds (I never use earbuds), so that wind noise wasn't THAT bad for me.
Ah, the differences between TS, TRS and TRRS connectors. But quite frankly, a mic like that only needs TS. Some have more cuz they might go into a jack that's intended for headphones AND mic, though. Extra rings are required for those signals. A good mic adaptor should be able to get the signal off a ring and sleeve as on a simple TS connector, it's all just sleeve anyway. But yeah, adaptors are bad for anything moving. The connection will fatigue and introduce noise and static over time.
You're a UA-cam influencer. Reach out to both GoPro and Insta360. Mention the concerns with each company's product for your needs. You're not the only motorcyclist that uses action cameras by far, so they SHOULD listen. They might ask you to test some changes even to help improve things. GoPro probably just needs to tweak their software to work better. The audio dongle was replaced by the media mod, which basically wraps the dongle around the whole camera, lol. Insta360 would need to redesign their mic adaptor and possibly their noise reduction in their software.
I hope you can quickly settle into a setup that works well for you. I like the idea of the modular camera Insta360 is doing. You can just take it off your helmet and mount it elsewhere for some 360 action. But that will probably mean you go micless unless you get a wireless mic, which might solve some of your issues (but $$$). Wait for the DJI if you do. The Rode is nice, but the DJI looks really good, IMO.
I used to work in the AV business in trade shows, doing sound, computer projection, etc. Plus I used to be a semi-pro musician (hobbyist for a very long time now, tho), so I'm into the gear stuff. I like the occasional gear vid and refitting your new lid was a perfect opportunity to nerd out with us. Sorry for yet another epic comment from MNB. lol

So, I didn't think the initial audio was too bad, maybe not as good as your older setup, but not bad. That being said, I use a gopro hero 6 still, and the gopro mic adapter. But I have really good luck with the giant Squid mic. I'm by no means trying to just grab views, but check out one of my videos to see what you think of the audio. It's a pretty cheap mic and might be worth testing out with your new insta setup.

  • @scottspencer8358

The video was good with the rockform camera the audio picked up wind noise but not real bad..you didn't mention if the shield was down or not..probably was down. So if the shield was down air turbulence was coming up around your chin and the Mike was picking it up in the background but did not override your voice which was perfectly clear and loud. Maybe some sort of wind deflector around the bottom of the helmet would lessen the wind noise ...you may be able to quiet it down with a scarf around your neck to help block out the wind from entering the inside of the helmet, but it wouldn't be very comfortable in the summer heat. All in all it really wasn't as bad as some others I have heard on videos. The stability of the video was great . You had mentioned you could see the camera moving about in front of your face...but it did not show in the actual video. I would give it a 8.5 out of 10 over all. But it's up to you. I did notice at some point the wind noise did get somewhat quieter and it may be because you were looking slightly down and closed off the opening under the helmet some. I'm sure you will come up with remedy to quiet the background noises more. Also you didn't mention if you had replaced the cheek padding before taking hour ride. No doubt in my mind that you will get it all figured out.

I like your videos even if cruisers are of next to zero interest for me, even the R18 and I am a BMW guy! Keep up the good work.
I hear you regarding the GoPro lack of reliability and completely agree. I have a GoPro Hero & Black that has locked up on me at inopportune times during a motorcycle tour and I lost opportunities to record because I could not turn on the camera or it locked up while recording. And don't get me started about the GoPro Remote - POS. Never reconnects when turned on.
So I got a Insta360 ONE RS with the 4K Boost lens and tried it for motovlogging. I had the Insta360 ONE R with the 360 lens mod and it never locked up so it appears to be totally relaible hence the purchase of the RS. So far I am encouraged and have no issues with the audio although I rate the GoPro audio slightly better as it comes out slightly fuller, while the sound from the RS seems to be slightly sharper. That may actually be better for voice and certainly can be post processed if desired. You certainly sounded fine in this video - nice and clear - and for me the sound was definitely better than when you used the Sena mic. That sounded muffled. Stabilization and colour redition on the RS is great and is comparable to my GoPro. I will be doing a comparison video on my channel soon.
