New York you know I've never liked the feeling of gloves on my hands. I work in a ford plant and I wear a glove on my left hand one-hour a day when I'm lifting sharp parts with that hand.
I have a 2007 Mercury Mariner Hybrid with the 2.3L engine. I tried buying the Size "B" metal cap wrench as was suggested in this video, but it didn't work for me. The cap wrench seemed too big and just kept slipping off. After searching around in stores and online I found that the correct size is 75.6mm with 14 flutes. The OTC 6903 was the exact fit tool which I've since ordered online and used. It fit perfectly snug and could remove the plastic filter cover even though it was on pretty tight.
Frank Sevier thanks for the comment. I did see that online, i use the oem industrial brand which is 76mm 14. seems to fit well. Maybe it depends on how close to spec they are made. .4mm is almost an insignificant difference unless it is cheaply made and flexes a lot, like the first plastic one i bought.
I think the B I use is 76/14 the D size is 75/14. you could be right, there is a little play in it when i slide it on. the important part is for it to be very solid, preferably metal so there is no flex. snap on sells one a one size fits all between 74 - 76 /14. store.snapon.com/Oil-Filter-Wrenches-74-76-2-mm-14-Flute-Filter-End-Cap-Wrench-P886008.aspx
The best is cap style oil wrench “B” Cap (76mm, 14 Flutes) , go to AutoZone or advance Auto parts no Amazon !!! we need local business in business!!!!!
Can I bleed a 2005 Ford Escape Hybrid brakes like a regular car or do I have to use some machine? What happens if I don't use the machine and bleed like normal?
It depends. I am in a Facebook group ford escape hybrid owners. We have had several discussions. Many people say that it can be done using a computer hookup. Others say that only ford dealer can do it. A few people, myself included have successfully done it by standard bleeding or the leak down method. (Sometimes the standard bleeding takes several attempts or doesn't work at all). So I say, yes it can work, but I cannot say that it is the right way to do it, or that it is safe.
I have a 05 escape hybrid, a friend helped me to replace the front brakes lines and we bleed it normally, but my mechanic changed the brakes pads/rotors and he couldn't bleed it normally, he had to take it to the dealership. I am thinking on buying a obd2 scanner with a bleeding function just in case next time I replace the brakes the normal bleeding method doesn't work
You have to remove the negative battery lead, and two fuses (I forgot which), then do the job. Otherwise the dealer will have to manually force the brakes to recompress
Alejandro Cardenas there is a standard drain plug in the pan that needs to come out. the oil filter housing also has a plug in it , that one does not have to come out if you don't want to remove it. up to you.
Keep an eye on the Oil level, my Dad's engine just blew with about 220k on it because it was using Oil (and he didn't keep it topped off) and the Extended interval that the computer shows you is Waaayy to long for that car. You oil in this video looked like it was over due.
I'm a new owner of 2007 with 107K miles. Got delayed changing oil due to filter number, cap wrench, 10mm Allen....and found it down over 2qts! No warning lights even with separate scan gauge :-(
ebay. here is a similar listing. make sure to get a metal one. I had plastic, and it slipped , wouldn't hold good. Check out this item I found on eBay: pages.ebay.com/motors/link/?nav=item.view&id=272245316931&alt=web
+Lite bough mine 2 years ago, at 150,000. has 202,000 now. drive 55 miles each way to work. half expressway half rural. get 28 mpg winter, 32 summer. or 35 mpg if I drive carefully. I've replaced one ball joint (routine), front & rear brake pads (routine but rear wear out faster on hybrids), both front brake hoses (possibly design flaw. had to bleed brakes which dealer is supposed to do. they still work fine, but service brake message pops up sometimes), thermostat (routine, but caused mpg to drop to low 20s motor not warming up enough), rear shocks (routine, 1 rusted off at top stem), rear door light switch (common so I jumped the wires, separate video about that), horn wire (common problem had to remove front bumper to clean wire and terminal. easier than it sounds) electric coolant pump (did it myself before recall cost $120). orange wrench light has come on a couple times for sticking throttle body. so I will clean that soon. has rattle in suspension, I think stabilizer links are worn. possibly rear wheel bearings getting loud. . wow sounds like a lot when I write it out, but at 200 k things wear out. big thing was coolant pump and brake hoses. inspect those hoses for cracks. and get that pump replaced under recall if it hasn't been done. car will suddenly stop if it fails. (both dangerous issues) 4WD models are prone to transfer case fail.
Thanks for your Video. The Filter cought me off guard! I got the normal engine filter the 910s
always amazed me that no one uses gloves; any who, cool video, thanks for the break down.

Old school mechanics say if you use gloves then you ain't a mechanic! I'll take the gloves

I ordered this one, you are right it is a perfect fit.
Thanks so much for this video. If you feel so inclined I would like to see more videos about this vehicle.
I always wondered what the little o ring was for, question finally answered! Thanks
Not just hybrid. My 09 Mariner 4cyl has this as well. I'd never seen one before.
Thanks for the video. You have a great voice!
My 2007 Escape Hybrid took a 74mm 14 flute.

That's so weird, I wonder why that would happen

Thanx!
I think the drain plug Allen wrench is 10mm. 1 size bigger than most smaller sets :-(
Could be, I never take it out.
I'm thinking of switching to a spin on filter. There is a motorcraft part you can buy to do it.

is there a drain plug you need to remove...or is it just the oil filter?

Alejandro Cardenas happy to help. I have some other good escape videos posted that you might like.

that is a good tip. especially with higher miles, or if you have a heavy foot, or live on dirt road, etc.

+daryl turcott thanks. I also have an '07 hybrid. whats your mileage and how is it holding up? mines at 93k

+daryl turcott damn that's a lot of miles. Have you changed out the transmission fluid yet for the ecvt?
+Lite no. I'm 55, and I've never changed any Trans fluid or filters. only had 1 transmission ever go bad.
Size "B" is correct, but it wasn't strong enough to hold the filter and spin it off. Terrible filter design.
scv7785 had same problem. had to get a metal one.
I did use a metal one...still slipped. I even taped the inside to decrease the diameter, but that failed too. Cheap tools...
