I agree with you, fun game is more important when it comes down to it. But what happens when every game has a good or unique idea, but neglected the polish or depth? I'm afraid this is a trend that is only going to get worse over time. I'm less concerned about retention and more for my wallet and who I'm playing with. When the novelty of one game wears off everyone else moves on to the next game and I have to follow to keep playing with my friends. I'm not going to find new friends to play a different game every time a new game comes out that's unsustainable. Or vice versa when I'm interested in a new game concept not all of my friends follow.. do you see the dilemma? It almost falls into the concept of fragmentation. Which really sucks. Thing is helldivers is going to be an exception for me I'm going to stick with it regardless of who's playing it.

I personally think this is the way for gaming. there is nothing to worry about because these indie devs know: "if a game isn't good, then nobody will play it." so they make their art entertaining. Im not sure how Helldivers 2 is a “fad” game as its basically the same gameplay loop as the first game but better looking and 3rd person. The 1st game was actually a niche game with a fairly low player base. Even the devs didnt expect the overwhelmingly positive reception the 2nd game has had. Also Helldivers 2 is a prime example of what a live service game should be. Other dev studios need to take a few.. i mean all off the notes they can from Helldivers 2. Palworld is a great game game, why? Well it takes aspects and ideas that actual worked and were fun from other games and mashed them together to make a good game. It’s not a “fad” its just a good game that uses a bunch of ideas from other games. Plenty of other games, movies, TV shows and music, basically all kinds of media do this all the time. If you look at popular things in all media formats you can see what works and what doesn’t. The smart people see these things and say “hey I’m gonna use that in my thing” what ever that may be. Things are popular for a reason. I mean theres a saying that I use quite a lot “if it ain’t broke, don’t fix it” and when it comes to games that couldn’t be more true.

I played the first one long ago and my one friend was really hyped for it. My other friend refuses to let lethal company die and has been going out of his way to mod the crap out of it. These kind of gems aren't fad because they are flavors of the month or such in my opinion. They are good games at their core. The reason they are so successful is that we are at a point when AAA games are basically just...not good for the most part. They cost a lot and don't really have the fun they should in them. There's a hungry void for good solid gameplay that's not trying to message anything, not trying to be something it's not, and not hyping itself up. It's just out, and they are solid games. And the hungry void of players like us devour them.

Lethal failed at keeping the audience entertained after several games with sparse updates and an unforgiving system that did not reward survival. The game was fun with experiences made by friends such that they generated the content. Sea of Thieves was a money grab that had potential, but never left the early acess phase. I feel Hell Divers 2 sort of breaks the mold a bit. HD2 has caught lightning in a bottle and has an elaborate contraption set up to reuse and harness that lightning. Hell Divers 2 If successful will implement constant updates to keep players playing with it's intriguing premise, gunplay, abilities, and player driven lore (Malevelon Creek, GantztheDemon, and liberation percentages). The fact that it's set up like a war, the percentage system, the community representation in every part of the game, it feels different and game changing unlike any fad game seen before. I really hope we have a Halo predecessor on our hands.

i played the game, its def a game that im gonna continue playing because i like fight hordes of enemies and having Spotify in the background. though i do think it will lose players ofter the hype i just hope it keeps getting updates
Not really. The message I get from this video is, that the creator does not understand that not all games are meant to be played religiously. It kinda feels like whatever happens to a game, someone will see "line go down" and proclaim the end of the world

It isn't a bad game but I think it is an issue how people are saying it over shadows AAA games when it isn't anywhere near complete. I don't think the servers being down is a problem though, idk why it's mentioned it was to be expected.
Personally I liked sea of thieves when it was new, and rare has this thing with music and the visuals are fantastic. What killed it for me was the inch of depth the game had. I disagree there. But emphatically agree about helldivers not being a fad game. I did call it King of the month after all ;) But it has that fervor that other fad games have but the game is too deep and has an excellent plan for it to stay relevant and the players doing hilarious roleplay doing free advertising for the game. Arrowhead will likely be like iron gate with valheim and deep Rock galactic. I'm excited for them.

I feel like I should point out they’re only “fad games” if their player base dies. Among us still has players, lethal company still has a community, and palworld is still in development and still has players.

I also believe this is thanks to sony backing as well, since the game was developed as a sony exclusive in the first place. ArrowHead was the studio that announced it was AAA, no one else.

Dont get it twisted. Helldivers 2 is NOT an indie game. It is AAA. Afaik, ArrowHead mentioned themselves that it had an 8 year development cycle.
