Ducati Scrambler - 5 Things I hate

  • I owned this Ducati for over a year now and these are the top 5 items that i don't like about the motorcycle.
#1 Heat, we cannot really eliminate the heat issue 100 % but if we do a wrap around the exhaust that really helps bring down the heat a tiny bit. Anyway what I want to say here is that I really enjoy the bike, I do, so I am happy to live with these short comings. Alright now let get back to the ride.
    #2 Foot Peg
    #3 Power Delivery
Okey, let me show you what I am taking about in the next clip. I very slowly taking turn and there was a small pot hole that I didn’t notice, so the moment the bike fell in to the pot hole I was thrown back a bit in my seat and I immediate reaction is to hold on to the handle bar and ofcourse that caused to open up the throttle very slightly and yet the bike jumped as if it’s gonna do a wheelie.
    #4 Gear Indicator
I know for a fact that adding a gear indicator to the odometer is not a big deal for Ducati and especially for the price that bike comes with. Even some of the low price Japanese models comes with Gear indicator. It is not a deal breaker, but a very cool to have feature that I wish Ducati included in their Scramblers.
    #5 Seat
The last one is the Seat. I mean don’t get me wrong, the seat is not uncomfortable for short rides but definitely not recommended for long rides , especially if you are planning to ride for hours.
if you own a ducati please do let me know in the comment about the things that you modified to overcome some of these issues.

The snatchy throttle isn't a big deal for me because you quickly get used to it. The powertrain more than makes up for it because this bike is so satisfying to ride. My only complaint is the position of the signal switch. They could have placed it closer for the thumb to engage. The positives far outweigh the negatives. This is a premium bike at a great price point with an excellent power to weight ratio, is extremely well balanced, has superb braking, looks beautifully retro and is a blast to ride.

My 60 year old mother complains a lot about the twitchy throttle. She is riding on dirt roads more frequently and the throttle response is now becoming a problem. We are going to try the G2 Throttle tamer and the throttle body spacer kit. Hopefully it works out as she loves riding it on the freeway but slow riding is difficult for her.

  • @gregheck9982

I installed a Throttle Tamer on mine. It helped with the jumpy throttle.

    • @organichotdog3807

My SV650 also has a snatchy throttle so I installed a throttle tamer. The another problem was that both the stock throttle tube and the tamer tube had very long turning circles, requiring a ridiculous amount of wrist movement to go from fully closed to fully open throttle. And the tamer didn't really help all that much on my bike. So after a while I switched to a quick turn throttle to reduce the amount of rotation. I just decided to deal with the snatchiness. I just slip the clutch if I'm concerned about bumps in a slow turn in first or second gear, or run a gear higher depending on the conditions.

you will always have some heat however I can't say it's being an issue with my Ducati Scrambler classic which has the factory muffler and I do a certain amount of slow off road riding with it as well. If you put a wrap around the exhaust they tend to make the exhaust rot out so it's not a good idea. Again I've never really noticed that it was a problem for me even standing on the pegs in 1st gear over difficult terrain. Providing you are moving at more than 20 ks when sitting there is sufficent air movement over the motor to help keep it cool regardless of air temperature, within reason. I haven't noticed your issue with the foot peg. If it was in the wrong position it would be uncomfortable to ride, but it isn't. Given that it has a low seat height it tends to lean toward people who are less than 6' tall. Try keeping your leg wide of the peg so it doesn't hit it when you need to get a foot down or get off the bike. The engine which is from the monster has being detuned to deliver more torque low down rather than have to rev it. The idea behind this was to make it more tractible off road, and it is. It pulls from an idle and will happily chug around in 1st gear standing on the pegs. The torque is aggressive as is the power delivery as it is an 803 cc engine producing 75 hp. Perhaps the 400 cc (sixty2) would be better for you. There are no modes to set so it simply is what it is so you have to control the power wither with the throttle or slipping the clutch. There is a gear indicator on the new Ducati Icon as well as a fuel gauge. Otherwise you simply count the gears or you just keep going until you run out of gears. They have tried to keep it old school and simple. The brand new 2019 Icon has a new seat designed for long distances. I own a 2016 Ducati Scrambler Classic and I find it is very comfortable on long journeys ,no problem at all but the classic has a different seat I believe. I've done 420 ks in a day no problem at all (over 6 hours), on my Ducati with no fatigue at all.

For my Scrambler I lined the bottom of the seat with the alumnium foil heat absorber. Need to put some under the heat guard on right side too but the bolt is stuck on. Fixed the foot pegs by putting the Ducati Monster 04 foot pegs on. They are wider and have the rubber on them. Seat is an easy fix - get a corbin or sargent seat for all day comfort. Gear indicator not an issue for me.

Interesting and I know where you`re coming from. The throttle issue is common to many modern, fuel injected bikes which run very lean to pass emission controls. You just need to learn to "feather" the clutch. Ducati offer a comfort seat option. The footpegs, well, you really should be wearing boots on a motorcycle, for your own safety. As for the gear indicator, most of us older guys have ridden for years without one. I don`t want to sound disrespectful but, how hard is it to count up to six? The heat issue is welcome for us in Scotland! Having said that, there are plenty of after market cures for all the rest of these issues. I hope you learn to love it!

definitely the heat is bad, but I gotta say man I lover everything else about this bike. Probably not the best /first/ bike but an absolutley ideal second bike to own, one step above a 250. Nowadays, the scrambler 400 is only around $5,000, not much more expensive than a reliable first bike and a great entry level ducati. Kinda warm in the summer though

I suppose the heat might be a problem in a hot place with traffic. I live in a hot place (NM) with basically zero traffic, and I do not perceive the heat as terrible: I am rarely below 30-40 mph.
I heard a lot about the throttle being too jumpy, but that is not my experience. Unless my dealer tampered with it before delivery (I should ask) I find it much more forgiving and progressive than the other two Ducati I have (Monster 796 and Streetfighter) and indeed I wish it were a bit more responsive and immediate. Beside, at 75 hp, how terribly jumpy can it be?
Pegs position I suppose depends on individual body.
I find the seat neither as comfortable as a lazy boy, nor uncomfortable, compared with my other two bikes. I have done middle/long trips in two passenger on that seat without too much problems. However, mine is the flat track pro, which has an upgraded seat. I assumed the upgrade was merely esthetic.
