What are some of your favorites you have watched? I too have been on a classic movie binge these past couple years and find asking people their favorites is a good way for me to find out about movies I haven't seen.
@@xbrandi12345x Early films I've loved available on youtube are 'He who gets slapped", "the cat and the canary" (1927 version) 'The Old Dark House', and many more.
There are some similarities between parts of this film and some of those late 1950s Twilight zone episodes, the music, the feelings in the air. Now I see where the Twilight zone got some of its feel from.
This was my first time hearing about Clarence Muse (October 14, 1889 - October 13, 1979) who was an American actor, screenwriter, director, and composer. He was the first African American to appear in a starring role in a film. He acted for 50 years, and appeared in more than 150 films. He was inducted into the Black Filmmakers Hall of Fame in 1973. In 1943, he became the first African-American Broadway director with Run Little Chillun.
Thank you for uploading all of these wonderful, old classics. You just can't beat them...... timeless! I watch them all year around, not just at Halloween lol!
@@fk8118 , some of this film had similar feel and music too from the late 1950s Twilight zone episodes, now I see where those episodes got some of its feel and ideas from. Particularly the part of this film where the guy sees the ghost of the woman where he got his temporary murderous trance from, and the end where it was revealed that the woman really was dead and only got up and moved when putting the guy into his trance, Twilight zone did take on some of that type of plot
To think that this classic is now 80yrs old and to see just how far today's movies/Hollywood has fallen from a time where good storyline instead of effects kept ppl interested.
Bela Lugosi is the legend of horror for all times. He started his career in teathtre of Subotica city (region of Bachka, autonomy province of Voyvodina, Serbia). In that city is every december festival of old movies, and especially horrors in honour of Bela Lugosi.
i have never heard of this movie but since i am a BELA LOGASI fan i just had to check it out!! Kinda strange to see BELA in a movie and he is not dracula!! The movies of the 30s and 40s are so much better than alot of what is out today!! This is a GREAT movie and i am glad i found it here on UA-cam!!!!
Uncle Marty is a Bela fan, and proud of it! First time I've seen this one.. A strange combination of creepy moments and weird logic. I love the scene with the gardener and his wife calmly discussing the fact that they're keeping Lugosi's crazy wife hidden in the basement!
There's a great psychological story in this movie, does he kill because his wife keeps appearing and talking to him, and he thinks she's haunting him, or is he just crazy and kills because she left him? Black & white movies just have that certain extra "mystery " aspect, and the lack of gore just makes them even creepier.
I thought might have D.A.T or Displaced Aggression Theory. I mean he was angry of her leaving him, but yet still love her as you guys saw him alone in the dining room talking to himself as if she's still there - invisible. That's an example of D.A.S
I just love this film so much, thanks for the upload! I'll say it again: this is proof that Bela Lugosi would have done a spectacular job playing the dual role in Black Friday & *not* have needed to be replaced! And, had he been given his fair & rightful opportunity to do so, I'm pretty sure Curt Siodmak would certainly not have called Bela "incompetent".
A good one and quite atmospheric, especially considering the severe budget limitations. Polly Ann Young is just as beautiful as her more famous sister Loretta. (Turn out the lights and watch this late a night.)
I love seeing a dignified, intelligent black role in a movie of this time. Such a refreshing change from the bug-eyed, dribbling, 'Yessum Mista. Iza doinit ritch now!" What a great actor.
EVERY ACTOR IS A STEREOTYPE. BLACKS THAT GOT JOBS WERE PAID ACTORS. 1000S OF ACTORS NEVER DID. AND THEY'RE NOT CHILDREN THAT NEED SOME FOOL WHITEKNIGHTING FOR THEM THEN OR NOW!
Clarence Muse was a very interesting guy. I encourage everyone to look into his career. In many ways, he was an early advocate for positive representation. Sure, he was still a butler, but he was in charge of the other staff. It was a rare thing to see a black man giving orders to white people in those days. I love his performance in this! If you look at the old promotional posters for The Invisible Ghost, Clarence Muse is on most of them.
This plot was good. SPOILERS: Man falls in love with woman, and other woman who loves him becomes jealous. He is then framed for the murder of the jealous woman, when really it was the other man who killed her, but he doesn't know he killed her, because this other strange woman who says she's dead keeps hypnotising him into murdering. Bravo.
Always loved Bela Lugosi the best but only ever got to see his first Dracula movie and hope to see the second one at least--the early '30s were beautifully filmed.
kes S same here, I will watch as many as I can, I had no idea that he made so many different kinds of horror movies, apart from the one that really made him famous, I don't think I need to say which one that was!," Quote", I never drink........wine...
It's insane how much these teams packed into an hour. Dude went from guilty to executed in minutes. Imagine getting the death penalty for telling someone they wont stand in the way of your happiness.
those were fine days...used to work at state mental institutions(midnight shift) with a mostly criminally insane population...would make my rounds and sit down in front of tv and drink coffee all night so I would nod off because I drove 120 miles one way to work in country roads and smoked a lot of good shit !!!
Today's movies are not even close to the quality of the golden age of Hollywood movies of the 1930's-1950's. movie writers and producers of today ran out of ideas for movies years ago.
his madness overtakes him, but Lugosi does not overdo it. it's subtle, which makes this film a good one instead of a corny horror movie. he was a good actor and deserved more recognition than he got. but he didn't come from the upper class like Boris Karloff and Vincent Price (whose movies, tv and radio shows were corny - good, but corny). so Lugosi did not have the gentlemanly manner the other two did. seems to me anyway. At least he got to work though - really glad about that.. . .
Really enjoyed this! Thanks for posting these great movies. What is the last line of the film? Bela's character says to the painting, "I knew you'd come back. Nothing can 'bind' (?) us now, darling."
The psychological premise is somewhat unique among horror films of the period, but the plot is far fetched and totally unconvincing, another "poverty row" clinker. I still can't figure why Universal failed to fully utilize Lugosi in their horrors when he was such a hit as Dracula. Why, for instance, John Carradine as Dracula in the two House movies? Their oversight landed him in a bunch of these potboilers to maintain a career and an income when he could have starred in far more substantial fare at Universal.
Allen Kracalik unfortunately it was somewhat Lugosi’s fault as well. He turned down the role of the Frankenstein monster because he felt that a non-speaking role was beneath his talent. That gave Karloff a chance, and he became a star.
It's a shame that such a good actor like Bela was subjected to accepting such substandard (and I'm cleaning up the launguage here) scripts and appalling supporting acting ....
