The film was based on the 1920 Broadway play "The Bat by Avery Hopwood" and Mary Roberts "Rinehart", which was previously filmed as "The Bat" (1926) and as "The Bat Whispers" (1930), both directed by Roland West.
Cornelia Van Gorder (Agnes Moorehead) is a mystery author who lives in a town terrorized by a mysterious murderer known only as "The Bat". The Bat is said to be a man with no face who murders women at night by ripping out their throats with steel claws. Early in the film, The Bat enters Van Gorder's house and releases a bat, which bites van Gorder's maid Lizzy (Lenita Lane). With Lizzy in a panic, fearing she may now have contracted "the rabies", an outbreak of which local papers have reported, Van Gorder calls her doctor, Dr Malcolm Wells (Vincent Price), who is conducting research on bats.
Meanwhile, the whole town is searching for a million-dollar stash of looted bank securities that were recently stolen. Dr. Wells discovers the location of the treasure when the thief confides in him. Wells then murders the thief in cold blood, presumably so that he can take the treasure for himself, which he believes to be hidden in van Gorder's house.
A series of break-ins and murders by The Bat brings the local chief of detectives, Andy Anderson (Gavin Gordon) to the Van Gorder house. The Bat then murders two people in the Van Gorder house, Mark Fleming (John Bryant) and Judy Hollander (Darla Hood). Anderson attempts to determine the identity of The Bat, suspecting both Wells and Van Gorder's new butler, Warner (John Sutton). Wells is removed from suspicion, however, when he is murdered by The Bat in his lab.
Miss Van Gorder cleverly manages to capture The Bat inside the secret room in her house. The Bat shoots a detective named Davenport (Robert Williams), he is then shot by Warner. Warner unmasks The Bat and he is revealed to be Lieutenant Anderson.

Directed by Crane Wilbur, produced by C.J. Tevlin, written by Avery Hopwood, Mary Roberts Rinehart and Crane Wilbur, starring Vincent Price, Agnes Moorehead, Gavin Gordon, John Sutton, Lenita Lane, Elaine Edwards, Darla Hood, John Bryant and Harvey Stephens.

Prefect movie for a rainy, dark day.
I got the autograph of Vincent Price at a gourmet seafood restaurant in Columbus, Ohio in the mid 70's. He was the epitome of a gracious man.
I came for Vincent Price but left with a new appreciation for Agnes Moorehead.
Agnes Moorehead has always been awesome. When you factor in film, TV and radio she was rarely without work. And who can forget her in Twilight Zone “The Invaders”
This wasn't corny. There was a good story plot with this one. I think Vincent Price was absolutely PRICELESS!! He and Boris Karloff were two of the most brilliant horror film actors.
Lon Chaney Jr. is #1
I love these old scary movies
@@shelia-paulettegarnerrober4355 Me too
@@thewoodwardreport2806 Lon Chaney, Jr., what exactly did he play in? Karloff and Price were two names everyone remembers. I'm sure I know who you're speaking of, as I'm almost 70-yrs-old, and have seen all of the old horror films.

Vincent Price was such a natural in front of a camera. RIP Vincent.
I’m loving this movie .. it’s an absolute gem.. Agnes Moorehead and Vincent Price. A dynamic duo ..
I absolutely admire people who comment without giving away the movie. Those that tell all the good parts, may you rot in a tomato patch.
I love these old movies they just remind you of a time when everything wasn't so technical
classic films
I've watched this movie a number of times over the years and it never gets less enjoyable.
Agree Fantastic Movie!
Didn't think the phones worked?? Vincent Price has such a beautiful soothing voice.
"That I suppose is the cat dropping its dentures" Where has this phrase been all my life! That's one of the best lines I've heard
Hilarious! I NEVER heard it, it went by too fast, but I thought that might be what I heard her say. I'm going to love that line forever too, LOL, thanks.
Vincent Price has a stare that could cut.
Yes, he certainly does!
Well said
I remember watching this movie on TV with my mother and father in 1959. I was ten years old at the time. Back then they were great horror movies , tho this was less of horror than others. Still a great movie of the time . Plus a great cast , of who would be faymous later on. At 70 now it's great too see again. Tom Daytona Beach, FL.
So awesome. Old movies...big beautiful homes. I can only dream of living in a home with front rooms and bedrooms so big and comfy.
CLASSIC FILMS!
Love bats. My grandparents lived in a big old Victorian house. Not theirs but great childhood memories. My grandma put newspaper up the unused chimneys. Sometimes the paper fell out. Bats would fly down the chimney occasionally. My grandma was tough and that bat never understand what hit him. My grandpa was a marshmallow. He was under the covers with me. These old movies always remind me of them. Now I feel sorry for misunderstand bats. Thank you.
Moorhead: genius actress. Real talent!
Vincent Price and Agnes Moorehead ... does it get any better?
I love everything Vincent Price played in. He was an excellent actor, a class act with a lot of sophistication.
he knew how to style
He was a 'class act" and 'sophisticated' as a private person, chef, and art connoisseur, too. Just as you said.
"You never had a baby , did you?"
"Course not, that's why they never bothered me.." 🤣
That line caught me by surprise in this movie. Funny!
😊😅😂❤🎉
One of my faves!!! Can watch it over and over again. Love Agnes and Vincent too.
I have this on dvd, this is one of my fav Vincent Price movies, my mother got me into the old bk an white movie. My all time fav r the Thin man movies! The oldies rock!!
Mmmmmm
The voice of William Powell.!
@Lisa Chantler, when I was 7 or 8 years old, my dad started letting me stay up and watch the old b&w horror movies with him. I was never afraid because he explained how it was all make-believe. I in turn explained that to my friends and later to children that I babysat.
I love all the Thin man movies. I have them all on DVD
Love the fact that there's no ads 😊🎈💯
Who besides me knew it was Lieutenant Anderson?
I could tell by his body language and the way he walked.
Hard to believe this movie is now 60 years old.
I am very grateful for these films , thank you 🙏. I find these old black and white films comforting, even healing. I think it’s partly because I’m old enough to have grown up with it, and books. One tv, 4 , 5 channels maybe...
Same here. ❤😊
the voice of Mr. Vincent is so soothing and relaxing to listen to . i never get bored listening to him . so elegant and sophisticated person .
alchicago123 I agree, very ASMR’ish
And he was probably racist as fuck like the others too
He didn’t shoot the guy in this movie, he soothed him to death.🤗
That classic 50s guitar throughout the film...dig it, daddy-o!
Vincent Price, Boris Karloff, Peter Cushing, etc. The best of horror. Nothing like it today.
Bela Lugosi,Peter Lorre,Lon Chaney Sr & Jr.John Carradine,Basil Rathbone,Rondo Hatton,Christopher Lee..etc
Bela Lugosi and Peter Lorre and that rounds out yet top five 🖤
@@haf816r oh palease, Jack Palance in doctor Jekyll and Mr Hide was the best. Lee was number 2.

These classics would mop the floor with movies nowadays
Love both Agnes Moorehead and Vincent Price...True Art....
A classic. Vincent Price talked about this movie during a lecture he gave at Western Ky University. He was a great speaker too.
My absolute favorite Vincent Price movie; and Agnes Moorehead is splendid in this! Also, the actress who played the character Lizzy Allen was a hoot! The movie has all the elements of a superb murder mystery...lots of suspense with plenty thrills and chills, the sound effects of the wind and the thunder, the big spooky house and all its furnishings... everything is just right!! I never grow tired of watching it. In fact, I've seen it so many times that it still amazes me how much I enjoy it after another viewing. Give me a rainy night, some freshly popped popcorn, The Bat and dim the lights
...and a good time is about to be had!!! Thank you for posting! 7.12.22
i notice that a lot of people say that they watch it over and over again, and I do the same thing
Lady No. 1:"Babies don't bother me".
Lady No.2:"You never had a baby"!
Lady No. 1:"I know. That's why they never bothered me"!
There's some great dialogue in this movie. I love it!
😂
Everyone is awfully calm with multiple murders in the house and a crazy batman. Also, who hooked the phone line back up ?
This is one comedy, murder, mystery worth watching.
Love Agnes!!
One of my favorite movies from my childhood! It was scary to us kids back then. They showed these type of movies on late Friday nights, when we could stay up late! Memories.....💚
Deb 7 and i had insomnia so always watched.. whoa the shotgun!!!!
Lol you're old
Still terrified
dont tell me.....you ate potato chips with sour cream and onion soup mix and a pepsi cola. Oh the days! delish!
@@ceecee3488 I'm eating and drinking that right now!
I haven’t found a bad Vincent Price Film. Also I wonder if the look of the bat inspired the look of Freddy Kruger, wouldn’t surprise me!
Lizzie Allen yeah ikr!
UA-cam + Timeless Classic Movies = TV IS DEAD!! from Puerto Rico, Thanks.
Vincent price was a true legend master of horrors
I have this movie and I had watched maybe a dozen times, it is fantastic, I love movies with old houses.
Now That Is A Good Movie. Thank You For The Upload..
A great old classic with an excellent new cast! Darla Hood looked exactly like she did during her LITTLE RASCALS days. According to IMDB, this was her last screen appearance, although she still did some voice work, which she had been doing for some time.
Yes, Darla Hood looked like her kid self, for sure.
It was that dark, nasty-looking claw coming from behind the door that freaked me out as a kid. This is probably my 3rd time seeing this, and it's still fun. How could it not be with Agnes Moorhead and Vincent Price in it?
erwin - a stupid remark and you can't spell - gee, you're so good at an insult, i'm dying from it. . .
umm - i wasn't talking about the cute little word - titties. if you knew anything, you'd notice that he spelled 'freight' instead of 'fright'.
I also had trouble sleeping after seeing this as a little kid (not sure why my parents let me watch it - even though it's so tame by today's standards)
I truly like this movie! But on a side note, I thought it was so funny when the bank manager asked his wife and the detective to come into a open room for a secret short meeting. Like no one could hear the conversation. But seriously, the movie was fun to watch.
Yes, haha.
Funny, I just thought the same.
😆.. I caught that too, and said the exact same thing.😆😆😆
I know I also thought it was funny. There's such an innocence to their kind of acting back then.
Lol, I am seeing this movie for the first time now and also laughed at the bank manager scene re “privacy”.
WOW now that's a movie that keeps you on the edge of my seat
I saw this movie at my hometown theater when I was about 11 years old...When the movies finished at 11pm, I had to walk home, alone, in the dark.
If you look carefully at the names of the actors in this movie, you'll notice the name of "Darla Hood" of The Little Rascals. She plays the secretary.
yes i seen her she looks great
Hey, thanks very much, you have a great eye. So Lizzie was Darla, she was so adorable. I suppose once an actor always. I remodel their homes in Malibu, Beverly Hills, all places. Did 10 homes for ' Dean Cain' Superman. Very nice guy, very clean also, smart man. Thanks, frank
The Darla reply went to person on bottom of message for Donna, sorry.
Just wow! The elegant Vincent Price and the fabulous Agnes Moorehead. What a gem of a flick! Thanks for the upload!
Sometimes it's good to hit the comments first . Find out if she's a stinker . But. .. We usually allow for more of a bad film , if it's older .
I love MR VINCENT PRICE R I P TRULY MISSED GOD BLESS AMEN
I read the Mary Roberts Rinehart novel decades ago. One of my favorite mysteries because the ending was so surprising. Done really well here. And Darla Hood was a fun addition to the cast. Thanks.
Noted, and really hope to find, library or eBay. Thanks.
Agnes Moorehead is always excellent in her films. Why would they stay in the Oaks with an intruder right outside? lolol Nothing can beat these classic b&w films :)
Thanks Timeless for keeping these films alive.. wonderful. Angnes Moorehead and Vincent Price 💖💖💖
Great movie with Agnes Moorehead and Vincent Price! They were great actors of all time! Thank you for sharing this great classic! 💜
My sister and I grew up on this movie as kids. This is a massive nostalgia trip in the best way possible.
I used to own this movie- lost when my home was robbed, so thank you for posting this!! It has a great plot, beautifully acted by some of my favourite actors. Thank you again!!
Somebody stole this movie?
Eric D hmmm🤔 maybe it was the Bat! 🙀
A special note to everyone :
Please watch this movie, you won't regret it.
Too slow & old.
I prefer the old black and white mysteries, serials, detectives and westerns. The story lines may be a little dated but they are a lot better that the stuff produced today.
I agree very strongly.
Me too, are enterteint yet
They aren't dated because that's an apology and they need no preface that apologizes for watching them. (Everybody does this.)
But it IS fortunate that nobody tried to light a fire in those fake fireplaces.
Same here, I love the old american movies
Poor Darla. Who would have thought one of the Little Rascals, would be killed by a bat.
Venom101002 was that her? No wonder she looked familiar.
Slow to start but The Bat was deliciously wicked! Love Agnes Moorehead and the rest of the cast!
Absolutely love this movie , ive watched about 20 times last 3 years , just light hearted mystery movie , cant go wrong with angnes moorehead and vincent price ,
Of course, Agnes Moorehead will always be "Endora/Mother" to me, that said, she was a terrific actress. Loved her in "Who's Minding the Store?".
Vincent Price ;) Thanks for posting.
Fantastic film, has a William Castle vibe to it despite not being directed or produced by him.
Idiotic Tirades
The film has a Crane Wilbur vibe to it, and he did direct it.
I watch this and other old movies over and over and never tire of movies like this. Thank you so much for providing us really good entertainment.
This is just too good. I absolutely love these old movies.
Hello Paula, How are you doing?
CLASSIC FILMS!
these old movies are very entertaining, I hope that their are more movies like these that I'm watching.
Hello Linda, How are you doing?
The shortest dark headed woman happens to be Darla of the Little Rascals.
Her real name is Darla Hood. She is listed in the opening credits.
Still a little doll.
I’ve watch a lot of my favorites every year ! And enjoy them like it was the first time I watched them , they take a person back to a kinder time , people cared about others , there was more innocence ,and empathy !
This movie has one of the better "breaking the fourth wall" moments. It really startles you a little.
Agnes Moorehead's work in this film is absolutely excellent! One of my favourite parts is when she is locked in the secret room. :) Absolutely terrific! Agnes is one of the greatest actresses of all time. It makes me so sad to think that she is no longer with us, but her work will always be remembered and her name will live forever.

these were great movies to watch at a drive in... when first came out The Bat was the second feature after House on Haunted Hill. I remember going to see it when I was very young as a triple feature around 1962. The third feature was Brides Of Dracula.
Damn, House of Haunted Hill is a hard one to beat
Fantastic movie! Agnes Moorehead is fabulous. Thanks for sharing.
I wish the story & script were suited to the enormous talents of Mr. Price & Ms. Moorehead!
Darla Hood from the Original little Rascals is in this also, She plays the part of Judy. Sadly she passed away in 1979 at age of just 47 , From Hepatitis, May she RIP
When I was a kid growing up in the 60's in southern California, there was a kid in my class who told everyone one day that Darla Hood from The Little Rascals was his mother. No one believed him. The next day to prove he wasn't lying, he brought in a scrapbook full of glossy photos of her as a kid and also as a grown lady.
Good movie. Love Agnes Moorehead underrated actress gorgeous and talented. These black and white mystery movies are the best and l never get tired of watching Vincent Price. Thanks for the download.😄🎥🍿
Endora (Agnes Moorehead) was NOT a shrinking violet! Besides being a well-known writer in this film, she was also a sleuth of sorts. Thoroughly enjoyed this film. Later, when she became a cast member of Bewitched, she was also a good selection for the series as well.

I really miss Agnes Moorehead and Vincent price, both of whom did a fantastic job in this movie! What a wonderful time I had watching this, I remember this movie from when I was a kid staying up late at night waiting for the midnight movie! Brings back so many great memories
I keep wanting Agnes to use her witch power as Endora would. This is such a great movie. Vincent and Agnes is like having Thriller And Bewitched together. Gotta love it!
Beautifully filmed movie . Great acting . Love seeing Agnus Moorhead in this part . Love the candence of her voice .
Hi there. Did you mean cadence?
Agnes. (Or are you thinking of Agnus Dei?)
@@josephr.3814 I did not mean that as a criticism, but rather a witticism. If I were reading that in a steakhouse, I would probably have said "Angus." It could easily have been a spellchecker "correction" as well. No offense meant.
I honestly thought the acting for this Era was awful.
Moorehead
🤔 I thought Lizzie was Ms. Van Gorder's maid, which would make her part of the service staff.
However, Ms. Van Gorder told the police the only servant she had, her chauffeur, was away😕

A fun/spooky old movie, that reminds me of my youth. Vincent Price was sort of a King in the 50s 60s of boogyman roles ie. Thr tingler ,House on haunted hill, the fly " original " and films based on Edgar Allan Poe ,and he performed these roles with seeming relish or campy like his Dr. Phibbes movies.
