Quick tip here : Instead of doing 5 frames at a time, do the first and last frame, and then, put a keyframe in the middle of the shot. It should follow pretty roughly, then, you can go in the middle of two keyframe and adjust everytime it splits. It makes for a less jittery tracking and can save you keyframes that are not necessary. That was a great way to do it though. I still don't understand why there is no real tracking module in Premiere. Resolve is way ahead of the curve here and has been for the last 10 years.
For anyone curious like I was, "Full Stop" is actually the English/Australian term for "Period". I've been watching UK/Aussie shows for decades and had no idea until this video lol.
Correct! But, if you HAVE to work in PP or don't know your way around After Effects, as many don't, this is at least one way to push it in the direction of motion tracking! ❤️
You absolute legend! I tried following some other tutorials but what they didn't mention was that anchor point. I don't know what else I did differently but I trying to figure this out for a lot longer than I needed to until I found your video. Thanks! :D
Thanks!! In all my life I've never heard of a "full stop" on a keyboard, nor a term in Adobe. I was ready to pull out what little hair I have... Full Stop!
using a period as the anchor visual was clever, lol tysm! i was losing my mind trying to find the intended method, surprised they haven't ported official motion tracking from AF. i'll probably be using this method until i get around to learning the other app.
Yeah it's pretty wild that they haven't bought some of the basic tools like motion tracking over from After Effects. I will say though, learning AE as a complement to your editing work in Premiere is a skill that is only going to increase your abilities and options. It's a bit of a beast but I'd definitely suggest investing the time. It's a little old now but AE really hasn't had any major updates in years so it's still very relevant - check out this course by the excellent Dave Bode! ua-cam.com/video/PWvPbGWVRrU/v-deo.html
Very interesting and smart way to do motion tracking in Premiere Pro. Yet, not the easiest way... I still wonder, why adobe doesn't add a true tracking tool in PP, like the powerful one in AE. It would so much simpler. And considering the fact, that tracking already exists as a tool in every effect we ad on any layer... Adobe's point of view is still a deep mystery !! BTW, thanks a lot for this tut ;)
Adobe's POV is truly a mystery! I assume they just want people to have a need for AE hence not bringing a true tracking tool into PP, but who knows! Until then we'll all just have to keep finding funky workarounds!
I did everything u did in the Video Multiple Time.. But When I Copy the Keyframed Transform Fx into the Other Layer and set the anchor point the "Image" wont the moving.. Any tipps or conclusions for that?
my thought is possibly, without seeing your screen at least, does the new layer have the stopwatch key turned on? You can't make/adjust/copy/whatever keyframes without first turning on the stopwatch which activates the keyframes
Hi! Yeah, it can be surprising transitioning from FCP to Premiere Pro. While Premiere Pro doesn’t have built-in auto tracking like FCP, using After Effects for that feature is a common workaround. It might take some getting used to, but once you get the hang of it, it opens up some great possibilities! Cheers!
great tutorial, but for some reason it won't give me the option to copy the transform properties from the text to the video layer, any idea why? ctrl + c ctrl + v won't work and it doesn't at all give me the option to copy by right clicking
next best thing to try is copying the full stop layer (either cntl + c or right click -> copy) and then right click on what you want to transfer the tracking to and click paste attributes
I wonder why you can't just select the object and move it with the arrow tool which SHOULD automatically update the X and Y parameters but does not. Just another one of the mind-blowing issues with Premiere that greatly affect productivity.
I haven't had luck with the arrow keys but you can select the object and just move that around using the cursor and it will update the positional keyframes. Then you just play the video another frame or 20 then move it again....and it will update automatically. It's crazy to drag the position XY sliders to move the object in place to set key frames. BTW Make sure your clip is selected in the timeline AND you select the 'Position' effect in the Effect Controls window before moving your object or it won't work. This will activate the clip in the Program monitor for motion adjustments. (or just use AE ;0) haha)
You make an excellent point so let me peel back the curtain briefly - we hit a snag on the YT backend with that upload but rest assured that video is going to be out VERY shortly. Keep an eye on the channel ❤️
I followed the instructions for a PNG and while it APPEARS to follow the position and size changes and marks the keyframes, when you play the video the object does nothing.
Followed everything step by step. My full stop tracks perfectly but when copied effect to desired clip it does not track like the full stop does. So baffled... I sent a screenshare to y'alls Facebook messenger, maybe could take a look by chance? Thank you for the video though, sounds like many have got it to work!
How are you moving the full-stop around to adjust for the position of the biker's head? Arrows and clicking dragging with mouse doesn't work. I have to manually enter new coordinates until correct. Also want to have 3 of these trackers at the same time
I´ve only just become (... well, sorta) good at After Effects after a damn good teacher in LA alongside 2 courses with School Of Motion! And this was actually easier to do in Premiere Pro. Thanks a lot for this video. Very helpful.
Of all the features added to premiere over the years it’s crazy to me that a basic tracking function isn’t one of them…. This is the only thing I miss from avid.
I wonder with so many people picking up videography for social media content will they make it easier for people to do motion tracking speed ramping as easy a s what capcut can do. I have spoke to several people about Premiere pro and they say they prefer the UX of lesser video editing platforms
Hi! It sounds like the issue might be related to the placement of your keyframes. Make sure you're adjusting the motion path across multiple keyframes, not just one, to create smoother corrections. You can also try deleting unnecessary keyframes or refining the motion path manually to stop the "bobbing." Hope this helps, cheers!
Can this be done with more precise effects, like replacing a moving phone screen with a screen shot on another clip placed on the video track above? Can Premiere handle that?
I encountered a problem, just for future ref. Could you tell me why the overlay I added jumped to a different location during the animation / playback, when I copied and pasted the transform effect and scaled down / adjusted the anchor point as you described. I'm defo missing something and its really frustrating, but I've had to find a workaround (adjusting keyframes for the overlay) and move on. Thanks in advance, this may help others too! :D
There is a way to get the Warp Stabilizer's keyframe data and paste it on the motion position to create a realistic hand shake effect. Maybe using the crop matte auto tracking keyframes data in the opacity settings and pasting it onto the motion position would so it? Too lazy for tonight. Will test tomorrow. LOLL
Ah good call, for us Aussies and I'm assuming Brits / British English speaking countries a full stop is the dot at the end of a sentence, otherwise known as a period.
I don't know what the hell I've done wrong here but mine isn't working. It doesn't appear to be holding the positing I move the full stop to. I've got through frame by frame over and over again but it appears to be just moving the fullstop every time and not tracking. Do I need to make a cut everytime I change frames or something?
Hi! To zoom in while keeping the bike and rider in frame, you can combine motion tracking with a scale adjustment. After applying the tracking, go to the "Effect Controls" panel and adjust the scale and position to zoom in and center the rider and bike within the frame. Hope that helps, cheers! 😊
Hi, this video is great, but it does not work for everything. It is hard when working with text and it may not look great. The reference circle or whatever shape you use needs to match as much as possible with the subject. That way it is easy to match every 5 frames. Thanks.
There is no automatic motion tracking in Premiere ? even Vegas has it, I do not understand how a professional program like Premiere still does not incorporate it, it is unacceptable, I find it ridiculous to have to do it by hand, frame by frame, it does not look very good like that.
How is it that a FREE mobile app called Capcut can do this with a click of a button yet industry standard Adobe Premiere you still have to do this manually. What is going on!
After effects made by Adobe already made this easier way before Cap cut. I think this tutorial is for people who dont use after effects. So he's still showing that there's also a way to do it in Premier.

Of course, After Effects is designed for that. But, some don't have access to After Effects and still want to do the same thing. Hence, this tutorial.
