Using the tuner for practise is a super helpful tip!
I wouldn't say that there is a sweet spot on the fret though. It has more to do with pressure rather than position. I mean the fret will divide the string at the same place regardless of where you put your finger. But the pressure on the string will differ slightly depending on where you put the finger. And this will be more prominent with taller fret wire. So I would say that practicing putting the right amount of pressure would be better than to practice the position of the finger within the fret. If the position makes a big difference then you are probably applying too much pressure to begin with.

If your clip on tunner breaks at the clip you can set it on top of amp and get correct reading from the tunner

Another tip is don't try to set intonation with an old set of strings it will be different when a new set is installed or using different brands or guages

With a clip on tuner
you can clip it to the volume or tone control knob' makes it easier to see by looking straight down and gives a more stable reading from the vibration of the body...... closer where you striking the strings. I leave mine attached to the cam lob on my b bender guitars.
I’ve never thought about clipping to one of the knobs but I’m definitely going to try it. Thanks for the idea!

One thing I thought I’d mention regarding the clip on tuners ( I’ve tried lots of different ones too ), they tend to give a false reading on occasions. The most common one I run into is the low E string, in many instances it will read it’s a B note while it clearly isn’t. I’m not saying they do this all the time however they do, the more expensive ones ( foot pedal type ) are indeed far more accurate. I use a Waza tuner pedal however the less expensive one made by Boss I’m sure is just as good.
I never tried holding the tuner in my hand though ( your bonus tip ), pretty cool ahah 🤣

A tuner is a valuable tool when used correctly. When used incorrectly, it can impede your progress.
How?
If your desire is to be a gigging musician and you rely solely upon your tuner instead of learning to use your ears, you'll be unpleasantly surprised one day when other band members continually say you're out of tune. You'll insist you aren't, and attempt to prove it by tuning your open strings to your tuner.
But a guitar is imperfect. It's made of wood and steel, both of which react to temperature and humidity, often quickly and significantly. Tuning is affected by how hard you fret the strings. And, of course, by intonation.
If you havn't trained your ears to KNOW when you're playing out of tune, the fact that you chose to skip the fundamentals and rely solely on your tuner will be revealed. You will appear foolish and lazy.
Start at the BEGINNING. Learn and master the fundamentals. Build from there without the use of tools as crutches. Use tools properly.
You will be glad you did.
I can't tell you how many guitarists I've played with who can't tell they're out of tune. It's a pretty good predictor of how well they listen and adjust to the music around them.

Respectfully, I really disagree about the bending trick. Maybe you didn't say it because it was obvious and in that case I apologize, but using the tuner when practicing bending in tune should be a last resort.
I dont believe you can really rely that much on muscle memory because the bending distance for a bend to be in tune is different for each string, and each fret and even each guitar. And unless you're playing on a guitar that's not made of wood it's also constantly changing. Now I agree that the difference is so subtle that muscle memory does the heavy lifting, but the most important to me is relying on your ears. And in order to do that you must practice listening to your bends and hearing if you're bending in tune or not. Using the tuner is fine to periodically check if you are right or wrong, but IMO in that specific case the least you rely on it the better. Especially if you're a beginner actually !

I made statements like “on THIS guitar” but you are correct. I could have done a better job of explaining the nuance of each guitar is different and different gauges will be different and all that. I made some comments to those points but not enough to fully explain it. As for ear training, I 1000% agree you should be listening. I couldn’t agree more. But like you said, muscle memory is carrying the heavy lifting. And when you’re starting out, you have no reference point as to what a half or whole step is. You’re being bombarded with all these notes and sounds. So you I was trying to give beginners a reference point while also giving them a clear frame of reference to work off of. I didn’t articulate that well in the video. I apologize for that. Making videos like this is a new thing to me and I’m learned as I go. I couldn’t have done a better job in that section. I respect your points and agree to most. I think this is a great way to practice though. And it’s helped me for years. But thank you for the comment. I hope you’ll subscribe so we can have discussions like this on future videos. I’m always looking for honest feedback. Especially when it’s respectful and raises great points. Yep, ear training is important. I think over reliance on tuners slows down that training, because you don't learn to tune the guitar to itself. My first tuner was a tuning fork, and that's a good place to start. (But yeah, I have several tuners as well now)
My first tuner was a pitch pipe. I totally forgot that until your comment. And I’m in total agreement that ear training is mega important. But as a beginner, seeing an accurate representation of the notes is a great place to start hearing those intervals. It’s a reference tool. I agree with everyone who mentions ear training. This is an aside; are those bottles on your amp fretboard conditioning oil?
Yes. They are actually the full Dunlop cleaning and conditioning kits.
@PolyrhythmMusicLLC mineral oil is the best and cheapest fretboard conditioner. Naptha (lighter fluid)is the best and cheapest cleaner. All of those branded products are over priced and gimmicky. Their conditioners are mainly mineral oil with some lemon oil, the mineral oil is fine by itself.
I got all of those for free when I bought some other stuff. I usually use mineral oil. It’s far cheaper. I haven’t tried Naptha but I would be concerned with an oily film being left behind. But I will give it a shot since you recommended it. I agree with you completely. These products are way over priced. Just like the fretez to lubricate your feet board. It’s literally mineral oil. you never fret the 12th notes for intonation you harmonic pitch check it. i used to think for years you fret the 12th fret to the open but i was so wrong and most chords never sound right so i went over the guitar again and started doing the 12th fret harmonic and bingo perfect tunning all chords are all correct now and no one on youtube ever bitched at me again about being out of tune ..
The 12th fret harmonic will always be in tune to the open string; that’s just physics. You want it in tune to the fretted 12th note. That’s how you check/set proper intonation. But sometimes when the tuner can’t quite pick up the open string note for one reason or another (thinking acoustic guitars in a noisy room), you can play the 12th fret harmonic and try the tuner on that note.
No. Twelfth fret harmonic is the frequency of the full string vibration. So is the open string. You aren't checking anything that way. As a matter of fact, if you tune your A to 440 and then hit the harmonic its gonna be right no matter where the bridge is set.
Didn’t you just describe intonation backwards? If it’s sharp, you lengthen the string. If it’s flat, you shorten the string?
I may have misspoke if I said shorten the string. But the trick with the tuner works by following the tuner. So if I misspoke, I apologize.

Sure thing. I just reread you comment and you are correct. If it’s sharp, you make the string longer and if it’s flat you shorten the string. But with the tuner method, you just move the saddle the same direction you need the needle on the tuner to go. Tip #1 Don't wrap electrical tape around your strings.
I’m assuming you mean behind the nut. I know Metallica and bigger bands use gaffe tape when recording real quick. I use Velcro. Same effect as Fretwrap but half the price if not more. Is there a reason electrical tape specifically?

In my opinion, anyone who has not memorized the fretboard can't say he/she plays the guitar. So basic...
I've been playing for 22 years, and I can't tell you every note on the fret board, at least not without stopping and thinking about it.
I'm self taught. I played metal most of my life so there was no need to learn "the notes", just what sounds good.
Dimebag Darrell also didn't know "the notes", but I think it would be fair to see that he "plays guitar".
With all due respect: you don't play the guitar then, you play metal. Not really necessary to know the " notes".

I don't play metal anymore. I read tabs, and play classical mostly. I have the 1st movement of Moonlight Sonata down and Dance of the Sugar Plum Fairies.
I even know some music theory. I know a few scales and Greek modes as well, including the circle of 5ths.
However, I just can't stop on a dime in the middle of playing and name what notes I'm playing without thinking about it. I don't have the fret board memorized by notes.... but by sound.
I think most people would say I play guitar, only have been four 22 years.

I have to say I’ve only used my tuner for learning what keys certain songs are in open tunings & for tuning 440
I’ve never depended on my tuner to bend a note to the correct note , I use my ears for that.
But to learn a song & figure out what chord the chorus gos to or chord changes if your working with a piano player is useful at times.
But I’ve NEVER depended on a tuner to learn HOW to play a guitar
that comes with experience,wood shedding ,& playing with other musicians !
And if the strings are wore out , no amount of tuning will fix it , change the STRINGS !
