I was the Director of Marketing at Popeyes during this time and lead the development of all of these spots. Thanks Steve for posting them. Fun to go back in the Hot Tub Time Machine!
Thanks for these commercials , somehow this has a connection to me kind of weird . My dad used to treat me for Popeyes as a kid on weekends back in the 90’s , i remember seen Popeyes commercials as kid . Nostalgia 😢
Thank You Steve for providing us with your work. I love these commercials. They're so fun and entertaining. Unfortunately in the Bay Area we didn't start seeing Popeye's ads until circa 2009.
Whenever I did one of those combo deal spots, they would contract me to do about 15 versions of them with different price points for different regions around the country. Mississippi always had the lowest prices! This compilation just has a random selection of different spots without much regard to price point. But still - I get your point.
I remember seeing the Zeke and Red Popeye's commercials when I was stationed out in Biloxi, Mississippi as a Marine. Wondered what the fuss was. Then we stopped at one after a night on Bourbon Street...and I just remember thinking, "if this is the FAST FOOD in New Orleans, I need to go sit down somewhere!" And sure enough, over the next 5-6 months, we went everywhere in the city...Emeril's, Dooky Chase, Cafe Du Monde, Tortorici’s (now called Royal House I believe), and my personal favorite, Café Atchafalaya. All of that happened because our Simple Simon asses got blown away from the spicy chicken and red beans and rice at Popeye's lmao. Oh to be young and dumb again.
Does anyone remember the Popeyes commercial with the comedian “Bruce Bruce” talking about Popeyes? I seriously can’t remember if that was real or a dream lol
The one at 1:40 was mentioned by Artie Lange in the 2009 Howard Stern "Popeyes Runs Out of Chicken" podcast. Lange claims he saw this commercial several times at the hotel he was staying in!
The "Ground Zero" spot was created in 1997. The way actor contracts work, they would have had to renegotiate this guy's contract in order to re-run the spots after the first 13-week cycle (or 26 weeks). I'd be surprised if they ever ran it again after 1997 especially since Popeyes went to a completely different campaign in 1998.
Zeke was Bill Lobley. Redd was an actor I don't remember but he's been around. The voiceover was not Dr. John. It was a trumpet player in a NO band. If it hits me in the middle of the night I'll post an update.
Some are :30 with no special deal, some are :20 + :10 deal. I think there are a couple of "director's cuts" in there that are longer than :30. TV spots always had to be exactly :30 so if the director wanted a particular version for his portfolio reel, he'd ask for an alternate version to be edited.
This is my favorite commercial and restaurant Popeyes boy I love Popeyes so much I could live to get me a Popeyes Chicken box I get their 2 or 3 pieces of Popeyes Chicken with red beans and rice with bicuit Cole slaw and large soda ohh this making me hungry right now I don't have no money get Popeyes is my thing one more thing I'm telling you if you want some Popeyes Chicken go get your own Popeyes Chicken you can't get mines sorry I love my Popeyes Chicken so much
The creative guy at the ad agency was trying to recreate the comedic vibe of the old Sedelmaier commercials from the early-mid 1970s with a little bit or Warner Bros cartoon sentimentality. Check these out: ua-cam.com/video/OiQjdQGYTpM/v-deo.html The actors speak directly to the camera, oddball characters, weird lens effects.
I'm love me some popeye thats my favorite restaurant in the world I'm get their 2or 3 pieces of chicken and red beans mash potato and corn on the cob and large tea when Im see this commercial come on im say I'm want me some popeye so much
I'm love Popeyes so much im get their 2 pieces red beans and rice biscuit and corn on the cob pie too and a large tea Popeyes is my favorite restaurant ever
The Creative Director for that account later went on to produce a lot of other off-the-wall TV commercials. He was definitely on the edge. They would never do that suicide one today, tho.
That would have been 1997 in this campaign. There were a zillion combinations of spicy chicken sandwich that they promoted in the following years, though some were only in test markets.
I love Popeyes my favorite restaurant I get the 3piece red beans and rice biscuit and a small drink from there love that from Popeyes i want some Popeyes right now but I don't have no money I wish that I could have some money to buy me some Popeyes right now I love that chicken from Popeyes that's my favorite restaurant I don't care who don't like it at all I don't like to share my food with people I don't care who don't like me
The guy who did the voiceover for all these commercials (or most of them) was a trumpet player in a NOLA band - he had the best voiceover voice for this. I heard him to do the prices for these deals so many times that whenever I hear a list of foods in a deal like you said, I hear his voice going, "... fuh only a DOLLah nahna-NAAHnnn!!"
These commercial were in the 90s and early 2000s sad though some of the menu has completely change sense then they had more sides more then you can choose from now they just chicken.
I'm 16 years old looking at chicken commercials, what am I doing with my life
Thats the right age for that.
I'm goddamn 18 right now
🤣🤣🤣🤣🤣
Hi Shannon! :)
That's nothing! I'm almost 28 years old, and looking at chicken commercials.
I like how even after all these years its still "love those chicken from Popeyes"
I liked it better than KFC.
I forgot the chicken sandwich came out years ago before social media
I honestly didn’t know there was a Popeyes chicken sandwich back then lol
The chicken festival's slogan "It's not a cult, but it's close" fits the 2019 chicken sandwich fiasco in a nutshell
I was the Director of Marketing at Popeyes during this time and lead the development of all of these spots. Thanks Steve for posting them. Fun to go back in the Hot Tub Time Machine!
Thank you, Philip, for all of your years of work!!
thank you - as a 90s kid, i say your work definitely payed off !

They really dissed KFC!
Oh
the old commercials were so much more interesting
This commercial at 20:50 aired on nbc
Bruh do you see them prices tho?!! Lord have mercy!!!

"I'm sure they're gonna like it where you ladies are goin'." That always cracks me up.
Does anyone remember the Popeyes commercial with the comedian “Bruce Bruce” talking about Popeyes? I seriously can’t remember if that was real or a dream lol
YES
And the commercials where CGI eyes pop out of the Popeyes logo at the end of each commercial
Yea
My how the prices have risen lol
The one at 1:40 was mentioned by Artie Lange in the 2009 Howard Stern "Popeyes Runs Out of Chicken" podcast. Lange claims he saw this commercial several times at the hotel he was staying in!
I was looking for this, good eye for expediting my search!

that's why i came here😂😂😂
He kind of over-exaggerated a bit. I mean the other commercials had white people do the same thing.
We still have all those specials on a backlog on the registers.
These classic commercials make me hungry
Like this commercial so much
I remember the first time I saw this ad I cracked up laughing when they lady appeared out of the logo to say "Love that chicken from Popeyes!"
Who played the "agents" in the 1998-2000 commercials?
(and is Dr. John [RIP] the announcer in the 2001 commercials?)
Zeke was Bill Lobley. Redd was an actor I don't remember but he's been around. The voiceover was not Dr. John. It was a trumpet player in a NO band. If it hits me in the middle of the night I'll post an update.

can i go back to this time? it was superior
How are these old commercials in such good quality?
They all came from broadcast quality digital betacam masters digitized uncompressed. That is why you can see some of the slates before te spots.
KFC ain’t got shit on Popeyes
Chicken that says "let me take your mouth for a RIDE!!!"
The real show stealer is Hollywood video for the nostalgia lol 19:33
bring them prices back!!
why do some of the videos play a few times again?
Some are :30 with no special deal, some are :20 + :10 deal. I think there are a couple of "director's cuts" in there that are longer than :30. TV spots always had to be exactly :30 so if the director wanted a particular version for his portfolio reel, he'd ask for an alternate version to be edited.
Steve Covello oh mk
100 SUBS WITH NO VIDEOS they want you to see the prices that you will never see again lol
Sadly you don't have the What's Ya Flava commercial from 2007 :(
Sadly, the ad agency I worked for was canned in 2003, and life went on...I edited over 2,300 of these spots.
Believe it or not I actually have at least one or two of those on one of my old tapes from around that time.
@@Barber747 PLEASE SHARE THEM ALL!!! I have been looking for commercials like them since the late 00s more or less
