As I mentioned in part 1 of the video series on the Apple Newton MessagePad, the early models were burdened with an extremely unreliable and inaccurate handwriting recognition system.
How does the original Newton handle my extremely messy handwriting?
I think you probably know the answer to that - but even I was not prepared for how bad it actually was!

Welp it’s been god knows how many years now but I question if Jason died ;-;
There is a capacitor in there that needs to be replaced. Replacing that cap made the speaker in mine nice and loud again!

I had a Newton over 20 years ago and I used to take it with me when I went out onsite to visit customers. The hand writing recognition was so bad that I had to turn it off and somehow had to read my scribble when I got back into the office. Unfortunately, my Newton is now long gone...
Hey Jason! Sorry for the offtopic but my friend has bought a PowerBook 150 and is wondering if there is a way to reset the OS (I think there's OS7 on it) to factory settings. Do you know if there is such an option? :)
Reinstall the system
@@SuperGachet Delete everything in the System Folder -> Preferences folder and restart. If you want to keep certain settings (e.g. Sound control panel recordings, game saved data), then don't delete the preference files for them. It's that easy. Run a virus scan later just in case too. I''d use Virex available from Macintosh Garden.

Hi, its another fellow Australian. i saw your video about the Macintosh Quadra 700 and have a PowerPC Processor Direct Slot card if you want to make a video on the difference running it on a PowerPC chip compared to its 68040 chip.
i can send it to you for you to keep/add to you collection of amazing Macintosh computers.
This is pretty funny. To be fair, the later OSes worked much better to predict handwriting. My eMate works with maybe 90-95% accuracy. It also helps if you write your letters more on the "print" side, and less on the "script" side, and make sure you connect all the parts of the letter.
Dunno whether I'm sad that you gave up same as I did or happy to not be the only one who got burned out. I've sold off most of my collection and probably haven't uploaded a video for a year or so also so I fully understand. Here's hoping you find something new and better to be passionate about. :D

It would be nice if you could inject a baked AI model onto the dictionary so it can recognize even more words and understand strokes better, perhaps by training it on the computer and adjusting it to the persons handwriting with a wacom and then inject that back to the internal software somehow or build a layer on top.

Don't think he's coming back. Guess we have to resort to just reading Wikipedia and Low End Mac articles about the Macs. A blessing in a way since it offers far more information than any video could cover. That and also in which I'm sure he also gets most of his information from.
I mean I guess we’re just going to forget the collab I did with Sage from The SFC Group about the macintosh Centris line. Unfortunately, I don’t have as big of a collection as Jason did, so I don’t really compare

Wow, that version of the software is really bad. I have an eMate which almost certainly runs a newer version of the software, and its handwriting recognition and delete recognition is so much better. It also allows you to select and move text, which this version oddly doesn't.

Does the Newton have Games?
I googled the price of the Newton in 1993 and it was $699.00 for the base price. That’s nearly $1200 in today’s money. Seeing how this “worked” in your video, if I’d have purchased this Apple would give me my money back, an earful; and a Newton chucked at their head! What a piece of junk!

It also had a "Mac Museum" part in the blog 😅 might just be a very big (like this paragraph!!) coincidence but I hope it's you and that you're keeping well from the renovations done to your home.
