- What has happened to Portland? Can we reclaim the city and not only restore its reputation but improve it? One thing is certain: wounds this deep will take a long time to heal.
The mayor isn’t overwhelmed, he’s encouraging it. The city council is promoting it. The prosecutors persecute the innocent and lift up and set the criminal free. What did you think would happen?
Isn't it amazing how people like you, I, and everyone outside of Portland can so easily see what...and WHO the problems are.......but the people in positions of power within the city refuse to!?!

If the people of Portland OR bothered to learn something about the history of their city, they would have a better understanding of what has happened there in the last year. In 1934, at the height of the Depression, Portland, San Francisco, and a few other Western American cities were locked down by a General Strike. NO One went to work for days in protest to the abject poverty that the Depression brought. Portland OR has a history of being a "revolutionary" city that doesn't take shit from anyone. Only a very near sighted person can fail to see that what has been happening in Portland really has little to do with Portland. The American Dream went flushing down the toilet at least since the Fed Govt allowed our manufacturing base to move overseas. Poverty across America has increased ever since. A Yale researcher recently published a paper showing a link between manufacturing going overseas and the Opioid Epidemic that followed. Instead of just staying home stoned on opioids because of an increasing poverty, Portland people went to war. And in war, there is no right and no wrong, just winners and losers. And it looks to me like the people of Portland aren't ready to be losers. Go Portland !!! Burn down that entire city if that what it takes to get the Fed Govt to notice the increasing suffering that all Americans have been experiencing for decades now !!! Whatever you want to say about Portland, at least the people there aren't ready to roll over for an apathetic government as most other American cities are. I lived there in the 90's, in the great Hawthorne district. I have great memories, but everything happening is what the people of Portland have created. This is the fault of Portland voters, most of whom are still so out of touch with reality, that they can't see that they are the reason for all of this. I have zero sympathy for anyone in that community, this is what they created. The final point of the video is spot on. Portland, with it's fantasy of utopia, it's nonsensical social programs, and it's tolerance for absolutely everything, has become what any rational person could have predicted it would become. It's the Detroit of the West.

@@wrybonesreport2988 Not all, but most homeless people are homeless because of drug problems. Just take a look at the trash piles created by homeless camps to get an idea of their mental state. You don't have to be a disgusting person just because you are homeless. They live that way because they don't care. We should be looking at mandatory drug rehabilitation rather than subsidizing their drug addictions. Being addicted to drugs is not a get-out-of-jail-free card that allows you to break any law without consequences.
This will not solve 100% of the problem, but it will address the lion's share. Being obsessed with partisan bickering will not help anyone. Get your head out of your ass and see that neither political party has any interest in finding solutions. The politicians' only concern is gaining and holding power and wealth. If you wait for politicians to swoop in and fix everything, you will be waiting forever. Be the change that you wish to see. While it is small, it is something that is actually within your control.

Having visited Portland my entire life I can say the Homelessness ,trash and vandalism is 4x worse that what they show.
They can't hide it no more, we all see.
I just visited Portland for a conference sponsored by my workplace, and was absolutely shocked by the level of homelessness and mental health issues in Portland. I have lived in five countries, and traveled to about 20 more and honestly I felt safer in some Third World countries than I did in Portland; I actually changed my trip to come back earlier because I didn’t feel safe on public transportation or downtown.

It’s still lacking in that city because KOIN news calls them protests still. They need to knock off the sweet talk and get serious. Any conservative that tried to wake people up before it got to this point was vilified and unfairly targeted with aggressive legal action. They gave up because the people there seem to by in large want what they were getting and now look at it. So Progressives across this country need to look at Portland to see the future of using mobs to push an agenda and ideology of a socialist utopia. There is no such thing.

I used to live in Portland when I was in the4th through 6th grade and I loved it. I used to visit my sister every summer in the 70s and I loved every minute of it. The city was beautiful, the people were awesome and I met lots of cute girls there. Now I have no desire to go there at all.
A couple of years ago I had an opportunity to move to suburban Portland. After watching the news about what’s happening in that city, I chose to instead sell the house to someone willing to live in a war zone.
It's still pretty nice in the area where I live (South Beaverton, 20 min outside of Portland) but who's to say for how much longer. I'm considering selling soon and moving.

It was a paradise the first time I lived there from 2003-2009. When I came back in 2018 I lasted a year and moved away. It was a great tragedy to see such a green jewel of a city turned into such a slum. I cried. But I understand that places change, and that sometimes they change for the worse.

Not what it was supposed to mean. If you look at police budgets they are out of control with no oversight. Some of that could be used for other resources. Do you still need a full police force, yes. Do you need M1 tanks in police garages, no. Both goals can be accomplished but it takes change, and that is hard for the elected officials since they are set in their beliefs. What it will really take is everyone coming together as Americans, and stopping this partisan BS of us vs them.

Portland really isn’t the same , reminds me of when I went to LA in the mid 90s for a family vacation, I never thought Portland would look like that , you see pictures of places like Detroit and other cities that business packed up and moved and left the citizens with very few good paying jobs etc , this is the road Portland is on .

I used to visit Portland regularly. The last time was 2017. Portland, like Vancouver, BC, Seattle, San Francisco and LA, are now just places to avoid. It will take 20 years to bring people back, but by then the loss of confidence (and revenue) will have taken there toll. So, yes, it is over.

I transferred to a art school in downtown portland- dropped out after a semester the place is a slum, so sad. A girl at my school got purse jacked the 2nd day of school after we all moved into the dorms. And homeless people would sleep at the entrance of our dorms trying to sneak in behind us- the shit was crazy for 10k a semester.
side-note: online school doesn’t justify tuition, if you’re my age reading this- take a gap year, don’t let them drown you in debt for this shit. it’s not worth it lads

I left Portland in July 2019 after 47 years as a resident and used to be proud to call it home. Now I am just disheartened, disgusted and have no plans to return to the city. Ted Wheeler (whom my late mother described as the 'idiot's idiot', and Kate Brown have taken what was once a beautiful and vibrant city and torn it to shreds. Inaction, far-left ideology and a complete breakdown of leadership has turned a great city into another Detroit, MI. They won't stop until it's nothing but a burned out hull of what so many of us fought so hard to create as a livable city that attracted the arts, culture and tourism. Sadly, I'm in the midst of making arrangements to move my mother's ashes from the mausoleum to be closer to me in my new hometown. My head tells me it's for the best, but my heart tells me she is spinning in her urn wondering just how things got to be so tragic. She, my grandparents and great grandparents would be horrified to see what they worked so hard settling, building and maintaining being destroyed by what can only be called gross negligence.

It's such a strange place, you really have a picture of heaven and hell on one block in most places in Portland these days. Beautiful well kept homes with some of the most majestic trees and gardens and then you turn your head and see someone who may or may not be dead laying on the sidewalk. I'm probably bi-polar to some degree but being in Portland is like being inside of my brain! They say the people make the place and by and large most people seem like they are on the verge of a mental breakdown- and who could blame them? Trying to keep up with an ever increasing cost of living and then to look around and see it all seemingly fall apart... its demoralizing and makes the grind that much more of one.

Actually there are ton of conservatives in Portland, who have left and gone to conservative states. My husband and I left before things got horrible, and now all our conservative friends are moving to conservative states. We saw the warning signs before some other people did, and are thankful to have gotten out in time!

I worked in Oregon in the 1970s and visited Portland twice. It was a beautiful place, a nice, clean small city - they even held Rose Parades every year. But at the time, the people of Oregon had a saying - "Don't Californicate Oregon". They knew even back then that a radical element was moving in from the south, and today we see the final result.
Portland wanted Democrats in office, and please tell us about the positive things the libs are doing.

These reports, segments, and documentaries with people wringing their hands at the sky about "the homeless!!" were very much in vogue even back then. No one cared because there is far too much psychological incentive to not fix anything, who would everyone feel superior to? Who would go to a miserable job everyday with barely livable or nonlivable wages without the constant threats of economic devastation and homelessness propelling them?? Who would blame themselves for every health problem that arises and just keep working through them until they're broken and done by 55-65? How would we even pay for everyone's retirement/disability if the system didn't wreck people before retirement age? So much hinges on each and every seeming inconsequential horror that is a linchpin in this precious system of ours ...
But who knows, maybe you'll be the smart one, or maybe you'll grovel so much that your abuser thinks you're special and gives you a job in politics...
