We Met a Family of Wild Marmots in Dolomites

- My 3-week rock climbing holiday began here, and I can't believe I'm actually saying this, but I met a family of surprisingly friendly wild marmots! 🤭 It was truly a one-of-a-kind experience and a highlight of my trip. It made me so happy that I wanted to share this happiness with you!
When this climbing crag began to be developed, the marmots gradually became friendly with climbers, and that's how this incredible story began. These marmots have been local celebrities for years now, and this place is always bustling with tourists who come to see these friendly animals up close.
But here's the amazing part - these marmots also get a break from the human hustle and bustle. They hibernate for several months each year, enjoying some peace and quiet.
Heavy rain can make this spot inaccessible, as you need to cross a river to get here. So, in many ways, these marmots have found as much of a balance as possible in such special circumstances.
Their natural diet consists of grass, herbs, and insects. And even with all the attention they get, they haven't lost their foraging skills. I've seen them searching for food every morning.
🐿️ Marmots are usually not people-friendly and will run and hide if approached.
🐿️ If visiting, wait for them to approach you rather than the other way around.
🐿️ This family, like any other marmot colony, has a sentinel marmot who will whistle to warn others when approached, prompting them to hide.
It's worth noting that this is a unique situation, and not an encouragement to start feeding wildlife. In fact, I want to clarify that you should never feed wild animals. This is a truly exceptional situation where marmots have been around people for several generations, and they've adapted in their own unique way.
Happy hiking and marmot-spotting! 🥾🐾📸

This is too funny 🤭🤭🤭 I had to pin it 🤌🏼
droll & amusing.
Marmots are the sumo wrestlers of the squirrel family.
Haha so true!
Haha! But if you think that, you need to check out a capybara!
Capybara, oh my god they look adorable!
😂😂😂
They make incredibly warm and water resistant gloves!
They're so cute, I had a big fat smile on my face! Thank you for sharing. Beautiful creatures.
Thank you, so glad you enjoyed the video!
I had a ear to ear grin on my face as well. Amazing how those little critters can make your day!😊❤
@@helloaelita You need to be careful when feeding them. They can bite off a finger along with the nuts))).
Спасибо!!!!!
Omg me too!!!!
Those Marmots sure know what side their bread is buttered on. Excellent video, thanks much!!!
Haha glad you enjoyed it!
It takes a sentient soul to know a sentient soul. The Marmots knew you were a true sentient soul. Lovely video and lovely Marmots.
Wow thank you for such a lovely comment ❤️
No, that was a voo doo comment. No such thing in the Bible. Your soul is your soul. If you love animals they seem to sense it as they do with me. I am always cautious and get low to the ground to be on their level and let them smell me. I let them choose me until they are comfortable with me or not. It's their choice. No mumbo jumbo about it. It is the soul that God gave us When were were conceived not born. Life starts at conception not at birth.
Plus they smelled the peanuts 😊
Or maybe they know she has peanuts!😄😄😄
never seen marmots being so friendly...usually they are very shy and avoid people. You can hear their whistles as they send the alarm when hikers are approaching and it is even difficult to see them...
You are right! This is the only group of marmots that I have managed to see up close too. Their home is next to an old rock climbing spot so they got used to seeing humans around them over the years. All the other marmots I came across would be whistling and hiding right away so this felt really special.
In some parts of the USA,they are called ‘whistle pigs’!!!🤣
Didn't know you had marmots in the US or are they same as groundhogs?@@charlesperez9976
In my family we called places like this "feeding stations." The tourists feed the animals and the animals get used to it and learn to beg.

Was invited as visitor to Parc Pyrennes, France, to feed these beautiful creatures. So gentle !! Unforgettable !!
No way! I have spent sometime in Pyrenees but never got close to marmots! Where was that?
Do they allow feeding of wild animals in French National Parks?
This poor little animals are gentle n adorable 😘 🐿️🐿️🐿️I think they will be happy to see u here everyday. 😅Blessing 👍
They are so cute and never complain when I visit them 😂
And its nice to see Agnetha Faltskog there with them

It's so good to see you feed them nuts, not biscuits or crisps!
That's so wonderful to watch them.❤
Thank you! They really love those nuts 🥜
@@happydogg312 oh, I see! Thank you very much, I didn't know they can eat legumes.🤗
@@happydogg312 oh I see.
So I have googled it now very quickly only and they're not allowed to eat bread and carrots as this food makes them ill.
That's so counterintuitive, isn't it.
They need to eat special grasses which get converted to fat. 😊
Absolutely beautiful!!!! Thank you so much!!!
we only saw them up in the mountains on ledges making calls to alert each other of us intruders! this is so awesome! so upclose!
Thanks, same here so it was really nice to see them up close for a change.
❤❤❤❤
When asked for a comment, the marmots replied "we love the blonde peanut lady, she is very nice!"
Hahaha Iove this!
They said, « this lady is nuts! »
It really shows you love nature and your bond with this group of marmots warms my heart- thanks for sharing your video!
Thanks for your kind comment!
Holy crap!!!!! I absolutely F’ing LOVE IT! Those Lil babies are true Snack Masters and so bloody Cute. I want them ALL 😁❤️
They have truly mastered eating those peanuts ❤️
They are cute!! Thank you for providing this wonderful video!
Thanks for your comment, glad you enjoyed it ❤️
I love that you don’t tease them like every other person on UA-cam. I love groundhogs/marmots so much they’re so precious and don’t get the love they deserve.
Aelita, I think you are so beautiful inside and out that they trusted you. Also, they had a lot of people climbing nearby, but still, they seemed really comfortable with you. I am smitten with these adorable creatures. It's times like this that I feel loved by the Universe. The creatures of this planet are wonderful and diverse, we are so blessed.
Thank you so much Pamela, this was truly an unforgettable experience and every one of those marmots are so friendly ❤️

@@homie3461 😂😆
So very beautiful, the scenery, and the marmots are adorable, but they behave like hooligans, stealing from each other and climbing your trousers! I guess it doesn't matter, because they are so cute. 💖💖
When you love peanuts so much you forget all your manners haha
@@helloaelita 😋😋😋😋😂😂😂😂
They probably getting frustrate from the slow distribution. I would keep those cute rodents at bay and throw them peanuts handfuls at a time.
@@kjererrt7804 :)
They are a greedy bunch and fight over nuts with other marmots!
Nice 😊 video. So natural and they r so happy. Peanut feast 😊
Thank you, they really seem to be happy 😊
This is wonderful. Thank you sooo much for sharing. I’m smiling now
Thank you Patricia, I am so glad this brought joy love ❤️
Oh my gosh..Im in love..I never heard of these adorable cuties. I cant believe they are so friendly. They look like little beavers
How cute. That waterfall also looks amazing.
Thank you. It’s a really nice spot and you can also do some great hikes in the area.
Wow absolutely gorgeous Marmots. Great close up. Excellent place. Big like.
Beautiful bird sounds. Outstanding presentation and video Aelita. Full watch.
So much fun. Amazing caves. Lovely melody and sounds. So peaceful and relaxing.
Thank you so much for sharing this awesome video. Have a great time and stay safe!
Thank you so much for your kind words! This place in Dolomites is truly beautiful and the marmots make it that more special❤️
Quanta tenerezza e dolcezza da parte tua verso queste tenere marmotte 💕 troppo carine ❤
Grazie per le gentili parole ❤
I love this. You are so kind. 😍🥰 It looks like that one Marmot at the 1:18 mark is in need of medical intervention to have his lower teeth filed down, because they shouldn't be growing that big....especially his lower right tooth. None of the other Marmots have teeth like that.
I agree, he really needs a referral to the orthodontist 🦷
✔️ Yeah, thanks for pointing that out, I'd missed it. Their teeth never stop growing, and they can grow so long that eating will become difficult or impossible. They can grow curved backwards to the point where an eye can get poked out by their own teeth. Or it can dig into their skin and cause sores on the head that never heal, causing infection.
I'd recommend showing the video to a local animal rescue organization, along with this exact GPS location, in hopes that they can go capture it and send it to a rescue where its teeth can be regularly trimmed.
Even snapping the tooth down a bit would help. Painful but lifesaving.
I would never have thought to take peanuts for them, they obviously know what you have in your pocket lol, love the video.
Nuts and grains are part of their natural diet so I thought peanuts would be a good option. Turns out marmots love them!
So cuties! I travel to Dolomites in 3 weeks and will try find this place.
Please do! Just type ¨Sentiero delle Marmotte¨ in the google maps, and it will get you there :)
Thank you! I finded and save in my google maps. 😀
Kind lady ❤ hello from Florida
Let us know if you get to see them!
ok but is taht good that umans feed wild animals was would the specialiste say

A marmot family ate my entire garden in one afternoon. And I wouldn't begrudge them one little bite! They are so precious!
Haha you can’t blame them, your garden was too tasty to miss!
Thanks for such a relaxing video. 🙂❤
Thanks for your comment!
You have to admit that the marmots are one of the coolest animals in this world and I can only hope that they are able to stay around for as long as possible. They are so incredible and I love that they are so strong and amazing in this world. Glad they are still around and can only hope that they stay for many years to come. Yup, I hope they do. ❣️😁
That´s such a kind comment. They are amazing creatures!
Lo que más me gusta es que no se pelean por la comida. Tenemos que aprender tantas cosas de los animales !

wow they're living like kings. Different varieties of food delivered by different people straight to their front door.
I presume one or another got used to being given food and the rest of the family followed suite. So cute and cuddly. Wonderful experience.

Marmots are so cute :)
They are adorable!
So cute and friendly. And how adorable when one tried to climb your leg. I noticed though they have dark heads (unlike the ones in Asia where they're brown all over.) That's good camouflage though for predators of the air.
Thanks for your comment. They are so friendly and how they use their little hands is beyond adorable.
Thank U for them 👍🏻😊

What a delightful experience
Thanks, visiting this spot has been one of the most memorable experience from visiting dolomites ❤️
Ничего себе, прожорливость какая!
Да здесь они избалованные и много едят... Пожалуй, это уместно назвать жадностью 🙂
Very cute, is it legal to feed wildlife in Italy. It interferes with their ability to find food in the wild. In North America it's not and the fines are quite high.
Great question! We couldn’t find anything saying it’s illegal and it’s a known spot locally. This was the first time any kind of wild animal was comfortable approaching us during our travels. Apart from a mountain fox once but that’s another story 🤭
Cutest thing I've seen today.
Thank you!
Totes effin' adorbs!!
Very cute, for sure. But I'd be concerned that these wild animals may become more dependent on humans for food, and lose their wild food-hunting skills. 😞
That’s a really good point. We came here a few times early morning and we could still see them foraging in the woods so they definitely haven’t lost those skills. People visit this spot mostly in summer so they don’t get to enjoy free food during the rest of the year as much. Still need to keep those foraging skills sharp!
Hmm but they r innocent breed very hard
@@helloaelita Marmots hibernate from October to March, so they are sleeping "the rest of the year"!
Thanks, I did not know that! No wonder they are so hungry haha
No creo que eso pase
Don‘t feed wildlife.
Not even some healthy nuts? I am just helping them to bulk up before they go into hibernation 😏
wow..... wundervolles Erlebnis.. danke für das Video ... alles Gute für Euch...

Lovely video. Thanks!

Beautiful little guys.

They are so cute!!
Adorable totally ❤😊
Thanks for watching and enjoying these cute marmots with us! ❤️
In Massachusetts, we call them woodchucks. I have them on my property, but I don't feed them. There's already a smorgasbord of tasty weeds and wildflowers for them around my property.
That´s lovely to have them so close. Do they ever get into your garden and is the constant whistling driving you nuts(haha)?
@@helloaelita I don't have a garden. I seldom see more than one of them at a time and they don't ever make any noise. They're afraid of humans and run away at the first sight of them. If I watch one from a window, I have to avoid moving. Otherwise, they run away if they notice me watching them.
