Dear Ellie, I am fascinated with your long tube sock, I have started one and can’t wait to see the results. I live in Redmond Washington and can’t wait for Thursday’s podcast in the USA.
I think you are fantastic, I have been wanting to make socks for the longest time and it scares me. The tiny yarn drives me up a tree. You make it seem so simple the way you teach, you are just great. I am going to give it another try, I have so much sock yarn, I have to make some. Thank you Alicia
Thanks, i am making toes up socks now, my fist pair, but I bought lots of this yarn and by luck or by the results of my research, I actually bought good quality sock ysrn stitch.
Thank you SOOO much for this video. I have been knitting for over 20 years and I make many socks. One of my favorite things to make. I had never seen or heard of this technique before. Bravo!! This is awesome!! I can’t wait to try this!! It seems like a lot of work but for two pairs of socks that match, not really. And I love that yarn too. So pretty 🧶
Thank you so much dear Ellie you are the best, I find it so brilliant and I just now knit a long tube for that.. I look forward to try this method to have two pairs of socks 🤗😘👌🏼👌🏼💕💕
A good tip also is to use while picking up the stitches and unpicking at the same time is to use a needles ONE or TWO sizes smaller the the needles you use to make the socks, you wont get as many dropped stitches! An excellent video Elley, great job! @Stitchopia it is not that hard, just watch the video a few times, before actually doing it, when your brain gets around it you'll wonder why you said it was hard, it's really not! That goes for everyone, people you can do this, you have a great video to go by!
Thanks Ellie for this tutorial! I am working on a long tube at present and this is just what I needed! I wasn’t sure how to go about splitting the tube in half but now I know how to do it!
I love this idea, but I think I would start my tube with the contrasting yarn for a cuff and end the tube with a toe, thus making sure the socks match perfectly and all the socks are knit going the same direction. Most striped yarns have more than one color of stripes, and this way they would match exactly. Also, you’d have more yarn for the length. I am saving up for a sock knitting machine so I could knit tubes really fast!
Hi Ellie! I am impressed! I’ve told you before I don’t knit, I just enjoy watching your videos, but this today had me on the edge of my chair!! I think it’s a good idea! You do such a great job in explaining the process. Thank you Ellie!
Wow. This was harder to watch than a scary movie. 😁I kid you not, I held my breath the whole time you unpicked your stitches. Excellent tutorial but will I ever do this? Not likely as I'd just make a big mess. 😁 You're the best.👍
thank you , so regarding the stretchy bind off , I understand the purling the purls and knitting the knits , but we knit thru back loop or purl together , basically creating the same directional lean since right needle is still right -- left ?? Matching maneuver , just one time is in the front , the other in the back , but basically the same stitch (creation wise?) If I got that correct.
I think you have it. by knitting or purling two together you are creating a longer length of yarn on the bind off making it stretchier. The bind of stitches all sit to the left so that they lay neatly on top of one another if that makes sense x
Just came across your video today, awesome.can’t wait to try. However, I do have a few questions. If I just want to make a 1 pair would I just hand knit a tube out of a 100gr ball? Then follow your steps to divide the tube and add the toes and cuffs?
If you want to make one pair in the same way as I did here. You could knit up 50g into a sock tube. If you would like a particular length of sock you would need to calculate the foot length x 2 plus the leg length x2. Taking off 3 1/2 inches from the length of the foot to allow for the toe decreases and heal x
This video is excellent. But, I have a question: I have put in afterthought heels when I was knitting socks without enough light to see to put the heels in while I was knitting. When would I use this method?
When you cut the sock tube in half, you have one set of live stitches knitted in the proper direction. However, the other set of live stitches are at the "bottom" of the knitting. Thus, the yarn tail is coming from the purl side, expecting you to purl, not knit. How do you get the knitting to go in the proper direction?
Hi Charlene, Knitted fabric is actually the same in both directions. Your knitting in a spiral but it should be the same either side of where you cut the tube open. You should still be knitting in the same direction x
When you cut into two, would it work to run a lifeline then knit a row, then another lifeline? The cut the middle knitted row and both rows would be on the line lines? I'm scared to cut and am not good at fixing dropped stitches. Thanks!
Hi Elli , thanks for this tutorial. I am one of the viewers who requested it. One question. It seems like at least the pair with the cuffs knitted with the tube (not added later on) are on opposite directions, one toe up, the other cuff down. Is that correct? And if yes, does that make the socks to wear, fit, and feel differently?
They don't feel any different if you are just changing the direction. At least mine doesn't. If you have a striped yarn than is directional you could add a toe instead of the final cuff x
What size needles do you use 0,1,2 or 3 us im working my first i started with size 0 and i changed it to 3 due to i tried it on and to tight going over my heel lols
I usually knit a whole 100g of yarn and that is plenty for me. You could however calculate how long you need the tube to be by measuring the length of the leg and foot you need x
Thank you. I wasn't aware such a thing could be done😃
Dear Ellie, I am fascinated with your long tube sock, I have started one and can’t wait to see the results. I live in Redmond Washington and can’t wait for Thursday’s podcast in the USA.
Fascinating tutorial Ellie

You can do it! It takes a bit of getting used to but once you have it it is easier than you think x
I haven't tried knitting socks yet but your tutorial has inspired me. I think i'd prefer using lifelines before any cutting though . Thanks
Leaving those live stitches with out a lifeline gave me anxiety. Lol. Very awesome video, honestly never seen this before.
I made socks from a tube a long time ago. You've inspired me to do it again!
Thank you so much for this video. By happy accident, I stumbled on your podcasts. Love them!!
I've been wanting to knit socks but dreading the usual process but this is what I'm going to do. So clear and informative. Thank you 😊
Ellie you make this look so simple, gives us the confidence to make the tubes ourselves. Thanks for the instructions.
Even more reason now to 3D print that sock knitting machine I found the other day. Great tutorial - thanks for sharing!
Thanks, i am making toes up socks now, my fist pair, but I bought lots of this yarn and by luck or by the results of my research, I actually bought good quality sock ysrn stitch.
Wonderful! x

This is awesome!! I can’t wait to try this!! It seems like a lot of work but for two pairs of socks that match, not really. And I love that yarn too. So pretty 🧶
You could do it with a non striping yarn and it would not matter about matching them up x
Thank you so much dear Ellie you are the best, I find it so brilliant and I just now knit a long tube for that.. I look forward to try this method to have two pairs of socks 🤗😘👌🏼👌🏼💕💕

Wow I heard everyone talking about these after thought heels and toes but this is a fantastic tutorial. Thanks.
You are amazing!!!! Thanks for showing us all how you do that!!!! Im excited to see how the heel is done.
I am in agreement with the comment before,I too held my breath you,are this look so easy but really is amazing
Excellent instructions, Thank you!!!
Excellent video Ellie!
I've been working on a bunch of sock tubes recently but I never finished the socks. I think your video is a sign that I should go on with it
Thanks Ellie for this tutorial! I am working on a long tube at present and this is just what I needed! I wasn’t sure how to go about splitting the tube in half but now I know how to do it!
You are a wizard!

Yes Good point Pamela x

Awesome tutorial, thank you! 😀

You can do it! Pulling out the stitches is scary at first but it is easier than you think, as long as you relax x
Wow! This was like magic and I loved watching this video. Waiting to see how you do the heel and then I will try this out myself. :)
Brilliant!!! Thank you... I can now tackle that self striping I bought and was too afraid to use!
Heeeyyy! I’ve been waiting on this one since I saw it last week. Thanks. 🙌🏾
Excellent tutorial! I love to get the most out of a ball of yarn 😊
Thank you for this, I keep ending up backwards, going to try again
You can do it Catherine x
Great job!!
Awesome
Thank you for the tutorial. I’m new to knitting socks and enjoy your teaching style. What yarn are you using?

Love your video! I recently purchased a CSM and am wondering if you have these instructions in a written format for purchase? Thank you!
Not as a pdf. But they are in the description bar x

I like to knit on a long tube when I am at the cinema and socialising so that I don't have to concentrate x

Hi again can you put these directions down on paper, needle size, length and anything else like the heal and toe directions, please
What size is your magic loop needle
When you cut into two, would it work to run a lifeline then knit a row, then another lifeline? The cut the middle knitted row and both rows would be on the line lines? I'm scared to cut and am not good at fixing dropped stitches. Thanks!
Absolutely! Good idea! x

What size needles do you use 0,1,2 or 3 us im working my first i started with size 0 and i changed it to 3 due to i tried it on and to tight going over my heel lols
Hi Kelly, I tend to go for 2.5mm (between US 1-2) needles, sometimes I use 2.75mm which is about a US size 2 x
Ellie how do you know how long to make your sock tube to make ur 2 pair of socks
I usually knit a whole 100g of yarn and that is plenty for me. You could however calculate how long you need the tube to be by measuring the length of the leg and foot you need x

Lisa B it is a twisted limone self striping, lovely isn’t it x
