Using the GED Calculator with the Quadratic Formula

  • A GED student, Pamella, emailed us a quadratic equation she had been trying to solve using the quadratic formula. She made a mistake with the negatives but then as I was trying to work the problem, I made a simple calculation error. Even math teachers make calculation errors, ya'll! It's so easy to make an error because the quadratic equation has so many steps! Follow along as Kate shows you how to avoid all those silly mistakes using your GED calculator, the TI30-XS Multiview.

    Very good if you can get all the steps right. I sure hope the GED is mostly multiple choice lol

    • @LightandSaltLearning

      It is mostly multiple choice, yes. And you can use this same skill (storing variable values) when evaluating expressions, evaluating functions, and using Geometry formulas. The repetition should really reinforce the calculator skill.

      This video really helped me in where to put which numbers correctly in the formula. I bombed the inequalities worksheet last night hopefully, with this clarification I'll do much better this unit. Thank you.

    I cannot find any instructions on how to do this on the CASIO fx-260 Solar II. My test is tomorrow morning :'( And thats the calculator they are letting me use. Please help?

      Are you in Canada? If so, the quadratic formula isn't on your version of the test anyway.

    Excellent video very helpful I can do these now. one question though is factoring trinomials the same thing as quadtratic equations ?
    I saw a reddit post of yours on the hardest things on the ged and quadratic formula & factoring trinomials is on there but to me they both look like the same thing. I hope if they are different that i can factor trinomials since i can do quadratic equations really well

    • @LightandSaltLearning
      @LightandSaltLearning  7 місяців тому

      Kind of.
      Quadratic equations are EQUATIONS (something = something) where the highest exponent on a variable is ². Trinomials are EXPRESSIONS. Many of them are in the form ax²+bx+c so you often see a trinomial INSIDE a quadratic equation. For example x² + 5x - 25 = 17 is a quadratic equation featuring a trinomial.
      That being said, there are THREE common ways taught to solve quadratic equations and one of them is factoring. However, it is not the way I usually teach GED students (unless they are advanced or college bound), because there is another way to SOLVE quadratic equations that's shorter to learn and always works (the quadratic formula).
      Factoring alone (just the polynomial, not in an equation) does show up on the GED, but since it's always in multiple choice form, I usually teach a guess and check method of foiling the answers instead of factoring. Again, in the interest of time. Factoring is lovely (and fast once you understand it!), but it can take students a while to master.

    Hi there,
    I was able to input the formula after storing the numbers, but on my calculator, I received a decimal and not 7/4. I copied to the exact and double-checked. How do I get the answer in a fraction?

    • @LightandSaltLearning
      @LightandSaltLearning  2 роки тому

      First thing to try is the quock convert key. its right above enter and looks like two arrows pointing in opposite directions. That converts between the two most common forms of a number, in this case decimal and fraction. If that doesn’t work, there is a convert to fraction function. Let me know.

      @@LightandSaltLearning thank you for your response, unfortunately, I am still not coming up with the same answer. I now get -7 with a square root 881+31 over 40 for the + section when I scroll up and enter with minus I get the same answer except with a positive 7. I am following you each step. I am wondering if maybe I need to change my mode settings?

    • @LightandSaltLearning
      @LightandSaltLearning  2 роки тому +1

      @@7houseastrology Nope. That is not a mode issue because that isn't equivalent. Changing the mode setting can only flip you back a forth between two equivalent answers. My guess is that you are using the NEGATIVE key instead of the MINUS key on the inside of the radical.

    Excellent video I’ve been practicing these on khan academy & I’m getting them right thanks to you but I noticed that my answer comes out reversed from khan academy’s answer but I can still tell it’s the right answer because I have all the same numbers as theirs just reversed
    For example here’s khan academy quadratic equation
    * -7x+1-10x^2=0 * my answer to that comes out as - square root 89 -7/20
    & their answer has 7 + square root 89/-20
    So why is that it my answer comes out in reverse ? Idk if you’ll even be able to understand all of the examples I used because typing them on phone chat makes them look weird

      It is one of the quirks of the TI30-XS that it doesn't display the irrational answers in the standard order, you aren't doing anything wrong. Since the answers on the GED are in multiple choice form, you should be able to match your calc's answers to theirs fairly easily. The main thing to watch out for will be signs. Remember that the sign moves WITH the term. So, if the top of your fraction said "square root of 7 - 14" for example, the correct answer would NOT be 14 - square root of 7, but -14 + square root of 7.
      Hope that makes sense. Also, a hard explanation to write without math text options.
