The title is wrong, its about Civil Defence, not Coastal Defence

Following the raid, civil defence became inclusive, whilst militarisation of given coastal towns/areas meant an influx of military units involved in forming more robust North East coastal defences - many have gone, but tank blocks, pillboxes and artillery battery still exist (at least in part) around the Hartlepool area.

Admiral Sir Percy Scott also mentions some adapted French 75's in his book "50 years in the Royal Navy"

The raid at the time was (As found in 1915 newspaper articles and books published soon after WWI) Germany's boast that they ruled the North Sea/The German Ocean and their navy was free to basically sail to Britain's coastline as close as 3-5 miles offshore, sailing slowly from North to South and bombard coastal targets of opportunity in fairly quick succession. An example of damage to Hartlepool Headland (The first location to be hit) included one shell that pierced (Passed through) the lighthouse close to the Hough Battery and exploded in the terrace of houses behind.

Hi Michael.. how effective - if at all - were the acoustic defences? [I seem to recall something about massive concrete dishes pointed across the Channel. Were they even FWW or interwar?]. Were they able to identify say Gotha or Zeppelin engines? Could they just say 'That's /an/ engine' and give a rough bearing? Or could they just say 'That's not a normal noise, and it may be an engine.. err that way ish'?

    That's the wrong Michael Reeve...
We want the one who doesn't know Switzerland and Sweden are two different countries, not some scientist...
