    WHAT WE EXAMINED
    We tested 10 silicone spatulas, rating them on their ability to stir, scrape, and fold a wide variety of foods. We also evaluated their compatibility with our favorite pots and pans, mixing bowls, food processor, and stand mixers. A panel of testers evaluated them on general comfort and ease of use. We also rated them on heat resistance and ease of cleanup.
    We put each spatula through a gauntlet of tests in a wide range of kitchen equipment and using a diverse group of testers (short and tall, lefty and righty).
    FOLDING
    1. Fold whipped egg whites into cake batter in large mixing bowl.
    2. Fold fruit puree into whipped cream in stand mixer bowl.

    4. Stir scrambled eggs in 10-inch nonstick skillet.
    5. Stir onions in 4-quart saucepan.

    7. Stir chopped carrots in Dutch oven.
    SCRAPING
    8. Scrape scrambled eggs from pan without breaking up curds.
    9. Scrape fond from 12-inch traditional skillet.
    VERSATILITY
    10. Scrape honey from measuring cup and small mixing bowl.
    DURABILITY
    11. Rest in 450-degree cast-iron skillet for 10 minutes.

    I have both full size and mini spatulas. As much as I like fully rounded wooden or bamboo handles for their good grip, over time, without proper drying they develop mildew. The one at 1:41 is to be avoided at all cost....moisture stays trapped inside and gets disgusting. I've taken to buying all silicone tools for their hygienic qualities but when their handles are on the flattish side, the grip isn't as good.

    I've used Di Oro for the past few years, by far the best. Even with high heat I haven't had a single issue of melting or deforming, any other silicone spatula I've used had that issue. It's important to know though that as a "spatula" it's not perfect for flipping things, they don't have a flat thin surface; so I still like traditional style spatulas for more delicate work; but these still cover 95% of tasks. Di Oro is commonly sold in a variety pack of 3, I use the smallest one nearly every day.

Because =both= brands had complaints on Amazon about stiffness (i.e. not scraping cleanly), and so forth. I know =exactly= what they mean, because my dollar Walmart (Mainstays) spatula from years ago scrapes cleanly every time, and it's good-quality food-grade silicone, rated to 500temp. Funny this gets recommended, dang Google overlords. I just got made fun of shopping for a spatula at a family gathering this past weekend because my favorite broke last week. I don't know or remember where I got it as it was well over a decade ago. Anyway, I finally found it somehow searching 'HIC silicone spatula' on the Googler which led me to a red, two piece, Farberware set at Wallyworld. It is a one piece molding so no nooks or crannies (sp?). But the coolest thing that I got really used to was a straight, no taper handle which allowed me to spin the spatula in my hand making it very easy to wipe down a bowl without stopping or turning the bowl. This is where a lack of grippiness actually was advantageous. It also has a curved and pointy end like this one in the video, which I do appreciate, but the video one seems like the end corner was a bit too sharp to get into all those harsh 90 degree corners that don't exist in the kitchen. 🙂

  • @tjmarx

    Your favourite costs $33 in Australia. I can't justify the $33 to mix food at home and I don't know many people who would. Especially when you can buy $2-$5 spatulas and get a pack of 3 spatula like wooden spoons for $5.
    You should factor price into these videos. Can we get "best spatula under $5"? Similar concept for your other "Best X" videos? Because it's all good and well to say the best mandolin is a $200 model for example but realistically most people aren't going to spend that. Buying guides aimed at home cooks should take into account home cook budgets

    I find that even silicone spatulas that start out nice and firm can become much less so after several weeks of use. I don't know if it's the gentle flexing or the repeated heating (or some combination) that does it. But I'd be interested if this preferred spatula retained its strength over a couple of months.

    What difference does it make!?? Use ANYTHING other than a wooden spoon!! I'm so tired of seeing wooden spoons being used by "chefs." ICK- they have ONE contact point, and you might as well be using a stick you found in the yard. Use a rubber / silicone spatula....

    I trusted Americas test kitchen and bought a Di Oro spatula set which included their winner. Do not make the same mistake I made. The Di Oro spatula is inflexible and cannot bend to conform to curved surfaces like a mixing bowl. This is a critical use for a spatula and it is a major design flaw that should have disqualified it from their review. Instead over 6 years later they are still letting it reign as the winner. Also, who uses a spatula intended for wiping food off mixing bowls and such for scraping stuck food in frying pans?? That's not what a spatula is for at all. Get a scraper or a turner for that. I have seen a few other review winners of theirs that I found dubious as well, so I will no longer heed the advice of America's Test Kitchen.

    NAH. I have a set I got from Ross very similar to these: amzn.com/B0711L3HDM All one piece, just enough 'scoopiness' to use as a spoon, tough enough to lift and stir heavy mixes, and works great on bowl scraping. They're cheap and I use them nearly every day.

    #1 key regardless = 1 solid piece. No components or builds that will fall apart after a few dishwasher runs. One solid piece. Throw out ALL that other junk.

    Hi, I am looking for a silicone spatula for my Vitamix. Any suggestions? I am looking for something to get under they blades for sticky things like nut butters. I know Vitamix sell one with a right angled end in the US but I can’t find it here in the UK.

    Any comments on the winning Large Spatula you chose? I see it listed but not discussed. Buying the All-Purpose one right now. You can never have enough of these on hand.

    It's hard to tell which spatula was the winning one because they don't even say what the length of it was. This brand sells two identical spatulas, one large, one smaller. The link is leading to the large one, but it doesn't appear to be the large one in the video.

    I purchased this spatula, based on the recommendation in this review-and almost never use it. It's too stiff to easily conform to the sides of the cup/bowl I'm trying to clean. I consistently reach for the silicon spatula with a stainless steel handle that we purchased at... Costco(?). It's much softer and is way more effective for my needs. I love ATK equipment reviews but this product recommendation didn't pan out for me.

    Maybe all of you got your questions answered, whereas I'm SO frustrated. It took quite awhile to view this video (i'm pressed for time) yet my questions remain: What's the BEST set which can (1) get mayo out of a mayo jar or narrower (2) fry patties etc. and flip them over (3) scrape a batter bowl.

    • @leegreen159
      @leegreen159 2 роки тому

      Williams Sonoma. They make a set of three, with a small one for jars. They don't flip (the best thing for that is the Revolution by Le Creuset in my opinion), but I have used the Williams Sonoma ones and given them many times as gifts. Another option for jars is a skinny spurtula from Mad Hungry.

    These are not the right kind of spatula to be using for baking. Get a set of proper soft rubber, not heat-resistant spatulas. They are much better at scraping batter, gently folding, etc. Unfortunately, the white Rubbermaid spatulas aren't as soft as they used to be, but they're still softer than heat-resistant silicone. (For the record, I also prefer wood/bamboo for cooking, and do not see a point in owning any of these spatulas. I tried GIR once; I was unimpressed and returned them. But YMMV.)

    • @jerrypritchett283
      @jerrypritchett283 3 роки тому

      I have two of the soft rubber, not heat-resistant spatulas. These are the best and I have searched the internet to see if I can buy more and I have been unable to find any that aren't silicone. Rob my house, steal my stereo, my tv, my furniture but leave my soft rubber, not heat-resistant spatulas alone if you value your life!
