Why Egypt's Economy Matters | Economy of Egypt | Econ

- Egypt's economy is complex, with historical significance 📜, strategic importance 🌍, and modern challenges 🚧. The transition from a state-controlled to a market-oriented economy has been slow, hindered by military influence that stifles private investment 🚫. Egypt relies mainly on agriculture 🌾, media 📺, petroleum imports 🛢️, natural gas 🔥, and tourism 🏛️. It is a regional power in North Africa, the Middle East, and the Muslim world 🌍, and a middle power globally 🌐. The Suez Canal 🚢 is a major strategic asset and a key source of foreign reserves, along with tourism. Infrastructure projects have created jobs but had mixed results 👷♂️, while high inflation 📈, currency devaluation 💸, and rising debt costs 📉 strain the economy. Efforts to digitize and boost the start-up scene 💻 show promise, but sustainable growth needs stronger pro-market reforms. Social and economic pressures, including high poverty rates, require urgent political and economic changes ⚖️. #egypt #egypteconomy #economy #egyptcrisis

But he was the one who built the vast housing projects to keep the poor with a roof over the head and not having a revolution every 2 years. you nailed all points, informative video. well done
Unfortunately, many people don't understand the real problem of Egypt.
Egypt, for more than 30 years during Mubarak's era, has ignored aggressively the infrastructure and the local manufacturing and relied heavily on importing.
During Mubarak's era, in 1981, Egypt population was nearly 45m and the 1 EGP costed 0.7 USD.
In 1990, Egypt foreign debt has been dropped when it helped Kuwait and despite this, Mubarak left Egypt in 2011 with more than 75B in debt and the population became 90m. USD 5.5 EGP!
So Mubarak, in 30 years, not only destroyed the EGP but also gained more than 70B in debt since 1990s and no one knows where the money has gone since the country was facing tremendous problems and the job market was near zero. Yes prices were lower than today, but the unemployment rate was very high and salaries were super low..
Today in 2024, we are nearing 115m people, can you imagine a growth of 25m people in just 13 years?!
The reason why Sisi gave all the projects and the infrastructure upgrade to the military is because they work non stop by order. And there was no way for the private sector to do such work without making profits which was way out of budget for Egypt.
Everyone knows that from 2014 until today the country went through major changes and upgrades in the infrastructure, but the only way to do that in short time was to take a risky plan which unfortunately didn't play well with the global and regional instability.
In 2019, Egypt was put ahead on the map. The EGP went from 19s (Dec 2016) to 15s (2020) and the country was truly on the right road but Covid, region instability and Russian war caused all investors to pull out their money and Egypt didn't have enough USD to cover its debt and expenses.
You sum it up nicely in your last paragraph, but I think it's almost unfair to call all the new infrastructure and projects risky. Who could have expected that global shipping AND tourism would have disappeared because of a global pandemic, and immediately after both it's largest food suppliers would go to war with eachother, and at the same time Lybia, Sudan, and Yemen would increase the intensity of civil wars to the point of targeting regional trade, and Israel and Palestine would go to war halting off shore gas development.
No country has been dealt a worse hand imo.

Even though a lot of what has been said in the video is true, Western media continues to show pictures of Egypt either from 50-100 years ago or depict what I call "poverty-inhabited locations" (the pyramids, camels, low-income people in humble clothes, crowded areas, and traffic lights). This perpetuates the Western ideology that Africa, and specifically North African communities, are poor.
Now, I'm not saying that all Egyptians are rich or living in fancy apartments or villas in residential compounds. But at least be fair and show that there is diversity and that there are lower, middle, and upper classes. Be fair and show all sides. Acknowledge what the Egyptian government has achieved in the last 10 years, including building a new capital, constructing 30 new cities around the country, establishing factories and companies, and developing the new Suez Canal.

@@Izzy_B241 I always thought Kenya was one of Africa's best performing countries. Looks like we have quite the journey in front of us.
Egypt continues to have many problems, most of which are self-imposed.
This starts with 30% adult illiteracy due to very poor education system. A population so undeducated as to not be able to read can't be employed even in simple manufacturing so the economy depends on sectors such as shipping and tourism. Tourism is hampered by security problems from terrorism and crime - a consequence of the poor education system.
Now, the shipping industry , i.e. Suez canal is destroyed due to the war creating a double whammy. No revenue from the canal and increased shipping costs of goods as without the canal Egypt is the end-point instead of a hub
BTW, the government of Egypt has significant role in the breaking of the war. All those weapons and missiles didn't magically appear, they were transported through Egypt and the government encouraged that.
That last paragraph is just not true and not possible. Guns and rockets supplied to hamas have no way of entering through Egypt, as it has fought for many years against terrorism in Sinai caused by Hamas. So, why would Egypt make it possible for them to start a war that’s not in Egypt’s favor?
Iran is Hamas’ sponsor and it’s the country that provided it with artillery and continues to support it through this war. Iran has great benefits in such a war and it has ambition to completely destroy the Middle East.
Why did you remove Western Sahara from your map ?

I see it naive from these reports who say that the problem is in the system itself, of-course there are problems but when you put factors like terrorism ,war in Palestine ,war in Libya in prospective the situation become easier to explain , like for example take the effect of Flight 9268 accident 2015 in prospective and see the effect that happened in 2016 and every downfall now makes sense
0:55 and occpietion
Probably should be mentioned that Egypt is fighting an insurgency in Sinai. And has active conflicts on its Borth East border (Gaza), south (Sudan), and West (Lybia), along with the issues in the Red sea.
Unless I missed it, there is massive issue that will NEVER allow the Egyptian economy to recover; it is called the population explosion. Until Egyptians understand the concept of birth control, no amount of economic development can ever sustain them. Each male and female produce on average 6 kids in a backward and stale economy. This is the biggest disaster that is sufficient to kill off any economy let alone a moribund one like Egypt’s.
Without 2040 or 2050 vision, they have zero chance to upscale their status, they will sadly remain a third world entity worse than Pakistan and Bangladesh combined and a source of malaise to the IMF and world financial system. Though, hunger has not yet set in, it is a prospect to look for in a decade. They will remain a source of cheap, abundant labour for their neighbours and refugees to Europe and developed countries.
No, you are completely wrong Population growth can also represent an opportunity for the economy,
It creates a large workforce and a huge internal market for products and services.
It can also stimulate innovation and economic growth.
The impact of population increase on the economy depends on how this increase is managed by the government.
If the government can create enough jobs and improve education and infrastructure, the population increase can become a positive factor for the economy.
But if the government cannot manage population growth effectively, it can become a major burden on the economy and exacerbate problems of poverty and unemployment. For example, look at China or Brazil, both of which have a high population, but we find that their economy is good, and china is even the second largest economy in the world.
@Zeyadelkilany: To Zeyadelkilany,
Precisely the point sir. The government has been unable to manage in any shape or fashion the population explosion in Egypt for the last 80 years; hence, the current catastrophic picture.
Comparing Egypt with giants like Brazil and China is entirely irrelevant. Egypt is mostly desert incapable of feeding and providing for 20 million people let alone 120 million that they have today. Egypt is primarily a desert with limited natural and agricultural resources. Brazil is mostly green with endless water and agricultural resources, it is 8 times bigger in size than Egypt. Same can get said of China although with careful consideration you will conclude that China is indeed incapable of self-sustaining itself food and resource-wise.
In the 1970s, China faced same population issue like the Egyptians, when they limited their population growth by introducing the one child policy, they prospered in 30 years and have become an advanced economy. Chinese astute planning and intelligence is a proof that you can’t let population explosion run wild with no control if you are seeking an advanced economy with prosperity. Letting things go provides the current Egyptian status.
The population explosion in Egypt is driven mostly by insipid religious beliefs that have wrecked the country rendering it a third-world one with limited prospects. Population maintenance requires competent management, something that has never existed in Egypt’s modern history.
I do however broadly agree with you, that with meticulous management of population growth you can reap the benefits in the long term; only one country has managed to do so competently so far over the last 120 years, it is called the US. 😊
@simonadams4857 I think you are right about how poorly the Egyptian government is managing population growth, but I was speaking in general about population growth not being a burden, and I can say that with 8 billion people we still need more and since you talked about China, China after implementing Strict birth control policies, especially the “one-child” policy, face many demographic challenges, including:
Population aging: The one-child policy led to a significant decline in birth rates, leading to rapid population aging. The number of elderly people has increased significantly, while the number of young people has decreased. This changing demographics places a significant burden on the social welfare system and the economy,
Manpower shortage: With the shrinking number of young people of working age, China faces a labor shortage in some sectors, which may hinder economic growth and greatly affect the country's capacity.
The Chinese government has realized the seriousness of these challenges and has gradually begun to ease birth control policies.
However, China's population distribution problems are still far from being resolved.
The government will need to do more to address these challenges in the long term.
Some of the negative effects of the “one-child” policy are still being felt, and it may take generations before China is able to address all of the demographic challenges it faces.
@@zeyadelkilanyIt is wonderful to discuss this topic with intelligent minds and thinkers like yourself sir, thank you.
I fully agree with you regarding the Chinese demographic issues. Their philosophy was simple back in the 1980s: get us developed as fast as possible then we deal with the demographic implications if we develop any. The Chinese developed much faster than they had ever anticipated; and the consequences of development caught them early but not by surprise. It was a trade-off; get me developed at any cost, make me a superpower or near one at any cost, then I deal with the upshot later. Now let’s see how they deal with this huge task rest of this century.
My point was: if you are an underdeveloped country seeking development without attention to population control, you will not develop in the medium or long term, you will develop in a century the earliest ( Egypt’s scenario). If your objective is getting results soon in less than 30 years then China’s model is a proof.
@simonadams4857 I would like to thank you very much for this fruitful discussion on China's demographic problem. I really enjoyed exchanging ideas with you, and found your perspective very informative and thoughtful.
