The GB vs. GBA problem is odd since it was already solved by Nintendo themselves: A switch that is directly attached at the cartridge slot. It'd be good to have the voltage auto-detected by the type of cartridge you put in as a security feature, so you don't accidentally fry your games. But other than that this is really, really awesome!
That is a cool idea, however, repros require less power. Ex. SNES games require 5v, and repros are at 3.3v. N64 requires 3.3v, however, prototype carts require 12v through the barrel plug on the Arduino Mega. The risk of frying your games is not very high. You'd have to leave the cart on there for a significant amount of time to cause any harm. Versatility is the reason.
@@androxilogin But are there any changes with GB/GBA repros or flash carts? Cause that was specifically meant as an "overwrite" for the Game Boy carts, not any other console.
I already see a problem, and that's expecting the user to always select the correct voltage and settings, it's not trivial, but can be done to check which connector is populated and automatically set the correct settings. There should be no reason why the user should have to remember to manually set everything up beforehand, as I can see some very valuable carts being killed by user error.

guess im a little weird since i dont value my saves all that much, even if i 100% a game, i still dont care if i lose that save since i can just get it again if i really want it back (more fun for me), the only exception would be games that i havent quite beaten yet. Still have cloud saves for steam and nintento switch, but i more use that as a means to move my data from my home console to my lite that i bring to work (i prefer the lite on the go and the hybrid console to be a home console), same with steam to go from home pc to laptop. As of late though i have been more on the clearing mindset, albeit not playing all the extras (recently finished blaster master zero and am not doing the ng+, alternate characters, alternate difficulties or boss rush), things in the post game however ill still try to finish as i consider it to be part of the game itself.
Cartridge slots on new stuff is notoriously grippy. Hopefully it doesn't damage the pins over time by scraping the metal. Still a nice device. Wish this existed before my link to the past save file got nuked.

IDK why I just like to have control over where I copy and store my files. Though I wouldn't be surprised if this had the same option eventually. Beautiful product.
What an incredible concept! In regards to the price tag it could of had bigger buttons, felt more premium as you insert the cartridges and was more compatible with familiar formats like NES. Overall awesome vid as always Tito, I’m always looking forward to the next one dude 🤓👍✨

Kinda wish it had a way to attach a CD reader to backup my CD based games as well. Would also be nice to have a general port that could read memory cards as well such as the PS1 and N64 memory paks.
Love the video and I’m really interested- I was disappointed in the lack of explanation if you got your settings wrong. Like wrong voltage- is it blowing the cart out and causing damage? Precautionary measures, if needed should have been highlighted.
If it’s anything like the Retrode, you get a corrupt file (if that). I’ve ripped over a thousand carts with the Retrode & Kazzo and haven’t damaged one yet. That’s on real carts; I can’t speak to whether repros are similarly durable.
The cartridge will refuse to dump and will stay still on the dumping process. It's not really damaging if you're doing it for some seconds, but there is a risk if you are repeating the wrong process multiple times during longer periods of time.
hey tito. I have researched a bit and, and find out that you can connect nes games to snes slot. you just need to have a transition. that's why it's on the menu :) you can definitely do that with the other cassettes too :) sorry for my poor english i have used google translator. really appreciate your videos they are instructive and good. love from norway :
Hello Colin! Thank you for sharing! Yes they have several adaptors. Like you mentioned they have one for the NES and also for the NGPC and wonderswan. It’s a very flexible platform 👍
Have already built mine. Pretty much did it just to challenge myself after finishing Makhos portable cart read (awesome, btw). These devices are so much fun to build if you have the skillset!
My guess for why they didn't include NES support is they wanted to get a certain size for the PCB which might of hit a good sweat spot for price and number of consoles on a single PCB. Though I also wonder why DS/3DS gamecard support wasn't added since even though they aren't as prone to degradation due to being flash based as time goes on if the cartridges aren't used within a likely 5-10 years before you start running a chance of losing the game data. Plus the cartridges and the reader are quite small so it would of been nice for them to include it
DS/3DS have security chips & decryption processes which could only be done with specific ARM7/ARM9 processors and proprietary keys. Keys which can't be replicated without violating copyright laws and could not be included on open source projects. NES/FC support could be done with an adapter on the SNES/SFC port but wasn't shown on video. A specific firmware update was done 15 days ago in order to add a more complete list of mappers supported for that system.
Oh shoot, I built a whole stack of these late last year and have been dragging my feet about listing them on ebay. Gotta get my butt in gear, it’s a tremendous little box.
I want to back up my wwf no mercy cartridge. Because of the infamous. Save glitch. Can I dump the save file then if the save glitch happens would I be able to just put my latest save file dump back on the cartridge?
I love videos like this with crazy, cool retro related devices like this. I also support anything that enables video game preservation. It would be great is a device like this could be combined with the Mister project. Put in your cart, set the dip switches, plug in your controller and you're off to the races. As always man great content.
Nice video and nice device! Whish I had one device like this one 30 years ago 🙂 BTW all my repro carts bought from China, upon insertion in sega megadrive console, they oppose mechanical resistance because the PCB edge does not have a V shape cut. Yestarday I played castlevania Bloodlines from a repo cartridge and I berly inserted and remove the cartridge from de console. I got angry and sanded both edges of the pcb cartridge at a relative 45’ angle in order to obtain the V shape cut. Now it inserts and remove more easely.
$110 is not expensive at all for this all one dumper. I paid around 60€ for the Retrode 2 and still had to pay for the GameBoy adapter which can't even read the save data from those cartridges in particular. If I did not already have the Retrode for my SNES and MegaDrive stuff as well as a dedicated GB/A dumper, I'd go for it.
I can understand backing up saves especially for n64 but for dumping Roms it's basically easy to go online download those not to mention downloads are extremely fast because of how small those are now
The Gameboy Camera should work with just a software update. The cartridge is quite unique in how it is addressed, I think it has a unique memory bank controller from memory
Heya! I saw on the Save the Hero store page that they are selling the international 50-pin Master System adapter for their cartridge reader. Do you think Save the Hero will plan on working on a Japanese 44-pin variant of the adapter supporting Japanese Master System/Mark III/SG-1000/SC-3000 cartridges and/or SEGA Card/My Card games via the Card Catcher? Also, will they plan on working on a Game Gear adapter?
This is really cool, but I'm more excited about the potential shown in the "add-ons menu" here. We already have several options for SFC/GB/GBA and even MD and N64 at this point, but are lacking really convenient ones for PCE and FC/NES.
Check out the USB-NES. Supports NTSC, PAL, Famicom, and many more. Can also read/write battery backed saves. DIY kits and pre-built models are available on eBay.
Hey this is a cool device. Rips it into a proper ROM and savefile format instead of the pseudo-proprietary crap that the Retron would do (and Analogue Pocket if it had even mildly interesting features).
With the issues I have been having finding the adapters for my old retrode 2 this may be on my wishlist. Though will depend on the adapters for Master System and GameGear for me
Now I am wondering seeing it does Repro carts as well, what happens if you were to say put a snes repro cart (for example) in the reader and select Super Nintendo instead of Flash repro? Would it still read it, reason why I am asking is it would be a nice portable until (with power brick) to take to game conventions if I can easily tell a repro cart from an authentic one without actually opening the cart. Also would I be able to tell the difference just by reading the display info of the cart? I noticed your repro cart read Type: LoROM SlowROM ICs: ROM ONLY Banks: 64 Chips:0 While your authentic cart read Type: HiRom FastROM ICs: ROM SAVe Banks:64 Chips:2 Would that be a way to tell the difference? Is there a way you could do a quick 5min video (if needed after doing tests) if it does work and what to look for. Thanks for the video
Wow thats awesome to preserve your cartridge based games and dump them into a SD Card on an Everdrive 64, Snes modded system, even Sega Genesis. When you dump roms, does the original rom dissappear from original cartridge?
$110 isn't that bad for a multiple backup unit. The one thing that peaked and also deadened my interest was the N64 port. I would love to see a N64 memory card reader attachment.
it seems like a good device, saves are very important if you have some sort of emotional attachment to the games, I would only want to keep a backup of my pokemon in 3rd gen, but I can do that with a ds and some useful homebrew, all other games seem like a chance to play them again when their save files go *poof*

From what i understand this is more to dump the roms and not only the save file. Which yes, is more important
Cartridge slots on new stuff is notoriously grippy. Hopefully it doesn't damage the pins over time by scraping the metal. Still a nice device. Wish this existed before my link to the past save file got nuked.
Yeah it’s super grippy. I also hope it doesn’t cause damage 😬
I would love it if a future revision of this thing supported NES games! But even now, what we've got so far is pretty cool!
Me too, nes support would be great!
Check out the USB-NES. Supports NTSC, PAL, Famicom, and many more. Can also read/write battery backed saves. DIY kits and pre-built models are available on eBay.
Man they way they designed this makes we want to buy one on looks alone. I have a submodule, and I actually like that it backs them up to the computer. IDK why I just like to have control over where I copy and store my files. Though I wouldn't be surprised if this had the same option eventually. Beautiful product.
I love the looks too! You can move the files from the sd card to the computer once they’ve been downloaded as an option too.
What an incredible concept! In regards to the price tag it could of had bigger buttons, felt more premium as you insert the cartridges and was more compatible with familiar formats like NES. Overall awesome vid as always Tito, I’m always looking forward to the next one dude 🤓👍✨
There is an adapter for NES as well as others available. The "Save the Hero" guy is not Sanni. Unfortunately this video is filled with misinformation about the project.

Kinda wish it had a way to attach a CD reader to backup my CD based games as well. Would also be nice to have a general port that could read memory cards as well such as the PS1 and N64 memory paks.
The complete system version could do it but wasn't shown on video - for reading and writing back memory cards.
There were adapters in the Kickstarter. The dip switch settings are printed on the adapters.
Awesome concept, cool design, great ease of use...
This could quite possibly be the most incredible piece of retro gaming tech that I will never need.
See this is the type of device they need for the MISTer to allow it to play original cartridges. That would be awesome!!
This is awesome but what I really want is a cartridge adapter to plug into my MiSTer and turn it into the ultimate FPGA console!
This is actually pretty sweet
I agree 😁
Love the Retrode2
I’ve heard good things about it
Definitely buying one
3:38 the "unused" port is a dc port, needed 5 volts
Awesome! Great project name.
Pretty sweet device to add to my backup collection! 👌
I love videos like this with crazy, cool retro related devices like this. I also support anything that enables video game preservation. It would be great is a device like this could be combined with the Mister project. Put in your cart, set the dip switches, plug in your controller and you're off to the races. As always man great content.
Totally agree! A cart adaptor for the mister would be amazing!
Nice video and nice device!
Whish I had one device like this one 30 years ago 🙂
BTW all my repro carts bought from China, upon insertion in sega megadrive console, they oppose mechanical resistance because the PCB edge does not have a V shape cut.
This unit really looks like must have! Now I just have to pray that my save batteries just last a few more months until I can get my hands on one
That's a rad little box.
This is game changer, Literally.
What an awesome device, I really hope to get one eventually!
This is super cool. Man, I wish I'd have waited to sell all my old carts, I could have been playing those exact roms now lol
Yeah, I’ve sold my fair share of games from my collection that I wish I hadn’t 😅
And then there’s me, who regularly went garage saling and flea marketing ;D
I can understand backing up saves especially for n64 but for dumping Roms it's basically easy to go online download those not to mention downloads are extremely fast because of how small those are now
Playing the data pulled from people's own carts makes them extra special.
Its essentially like making your own cookies.
This this pretty cool thanks for sharing 👌👌
The Gameboy Camera should work with just a software update. The cartridge is quite unique in how it is addressed, I think it has a unique memory bank controller from memory
What do you think about the polymega? It essentially dumps all of these too. It also dumps others… although the rooms are proprietary to that machine…
It's nice to finally see an open source alternative to the Retrode and its adapters. If my kit ever dies I'll know where to go.
The PCE and FC/NES adapters are ready (and kicking) but not shown on video.
Check out the USB-NES. Supports NTSC, PAL, Famicom, and many more. Can also read/write battery backed saves. DIY kits and pre-built models are available on eBay.
i havent watched the video yet, but i can tell i need this lol!
Wow this would be perfect for my Super Mario RPG which till this day still has my saved data stored on the cart
Oh man, got to get that backed up asap 😅
Hey this is a cool device. Rips it into a proper ROM and savefile format instead of the pseudo-proprietary crap that the Retron would do (and Analogue Pocket if it had even mildly interesting features).
Why didn't they just make the voltage change when you changed the menu options? It's easier than you would think.
With the issues I have been having finding the adapters for my old retrode 2 this may be on my wishlist. Though will depend on the adapters for Master System and GameGear for me
Yeah, I’m hoping to take a a look at the adaptors when they are available
@@MachoNachoProductions Great to hear, am looking forward to it :)
Legitimately thought about making my own for the Retrode.
I noticed your repro cart read
Type: LoROM SlowROM
ICs: ROM ONLY
Banks: 64 Chips:0
While your authentic cart read
Type: HiRom FastROM
ICs: ROM SAVe
Banks:64 Chips:2
Would that be a way to tell the difference?
Is there a way you could do a quick 5min video (if needed after doing tests) if it does work and what to look for.
Thanks for the video
That’s a great question. I’m sure if you know what to look for this could be helpful for that.
There was a lack of publicity for this incredible project at the time of the campaign. Me and other friends would certainly have bought this
Wow thats awesome to preserve your cartridge based games and dump them into a SD Card on an Everdrive 64, Snes modded system, even Sega Genesis. When you dump roms, does the original rom dissappear from original cartridge?
Nope, the original rom does not disappear 👍
i would love to find original carts one day. all i got is fire red and would love to get the OGs
😮 so cool!!!
As is it’s great! It has a ton of potential too!
Would be cool if you did a video on how to update the firmware!
Very niche product but still very cool!
im going to look into this more
Neat.... Very cool, wish it was a little less but, might grab one... wonder, I should be do most of it on my Retron 5...Hmmm
$110 isn't that bad for a multiple backup unit. The one thing that peaked and also deadened my interest was the N64 port. I would love to see a N64 memory card reader attachment.
There is one, it's a three wire installation using an N64 extension cable from Aliexpress. ua-cam.com/video/7k2hb82uRVc/v-deo.html
With more polish, I’d be interested. Especially sad gameboy camera doesn’t work.
it seems like a good device, saves are very important if you have some sort of emotional attachment to the games, I would only want to keep a backup of my pokemon in 3rd gen, but I can do that with a ds and some useful homebrew, all other games seem like a chance to play them again when their save files go *poof*
Grazie Tito, fantastico, ciao fratello 🤜🤛👍
I would like something like this that I could hook it up to the TV and play when I come home from deployment.
Very cool gadget!
