- We are going to talk about color today! This is something I struggle with the most when I’m working on my cards. I usually reach for the most common pink and yellow color combo only to stop myself and realize there are so many other wonderful colors and color combinations out there!

I love the idea of a series like this that teaches practical use of color theory. I struggle with color as well. A series is a great idea!

What a fantastic idea for a series! Love that the first episode uses complementary colors. Of all the color theory options, complementary is the one I find the most challenging (and use the least). Considering tints and tones is a fabulous reminder that complements can, in fact, complement each other without screaming contrast. Looking forward to more installments in this series.

Color wheels vary. Conventional ones usually have three primaries (red/magenta, blue/cyan, and yellow) and three secondary colors (purple, green, and orange). Complement pairs typically include one primary and one secondary color, so the usual complement of purple is yellow; the usual complement of green is red/magenta. More complex color wheels allow for more tertiary and intermediate colors, making it easier to pick a complement for red-violet (green-yellow), etc. A way to familiarize ourselves with the properties of the media we have is to create our own color wheels, picking the closest matches to the conventional primaries to mix secondary colors. (We can further complicate this by creating tints by adding white, tones by adding neutral gray, and shades by adding black.) In my world of color, green and purple are near-complements. The history of color and development of color wheels reflects the culture and availability of pigments, which is one reason color wheels and color names can vary (e.g., my markers from Japan refer to yellow-red rather than orange).
As a practical matter, it's hard to go wrong with green and florals, though some greens will work better than others with a given flower. The combo you've picked is lovely.

I also am interested in exploring new color combinations & ways to discover those options that are appealing. Most of my products are from Spellbinders but I will say that I do enjoy Altenew bc I have found in their samples color combinations that can be different. I realize doing even an eye pleasing different color combo doesn’t appeal to everyone’s eyes but I think it helps to exercise creativity just beyond color. Thank you for another fabulous video, we all look forward to many more.

Yes, I'm very interested in learning more about color combinations, because I also tend to stick with my go to color combo. As for your sample cards. I LOVE the purple flowers and the soft blue background. The kraft background isn't for me. In fact, the kraft background made me dislike the color of the green leaves, but when I saw them against the blue background I liked them.

Always beautiful color combinations by Yana! I look forward to seeing more. Another excellent and easy to use resource are the Color Cubes and on line Color Catalogs by Sara Renae Clark. Since Kristina Werner featured them a few months ago, I use them to help me choose colors for all of my cards.

who knows, maybe I'm wrong with kraft being like gold :D But gold is yellow and kraft is like muted yellow, so in my head kraft and gold are the same :D
