    Today’s seed of knowledge…Cues
    What is a cue?
Cues are visual or auditory signals that can tell us how someone’s feeling, their wants, needs, and their willingness to interact. It’s a form of communication. Like a yawn can tell us that someone is tired and a fussy child may be uncomfortable, wet, hungry or many other things and that fussiness is the precursor to crying, upset feeling, or tantrum.
A lot of us notice cues unconsciously, we are in tune with those around us but I encourage you to reflect on your interactions with the young child you care for how could taking a moment to pause and reflect have changed the outcome of an interaction.
Cues are signals that communicate a feeling, want, need or willingness to interact.
Cues can give us clues as to what’s coming.
The context of the cue is important, we need to have an understanding of why something is happening so we can respond appropriately
Our goal is to respond sensitively to those cues taking time to pause, reflect, consider what happened before, and what is their facial expression or body language telling me.
Remember that those hot moments may be difficult, so how will you regulate yourself, perhaps taking a deep belly breath?
Many of us are aware of cues and utilize them in our interactions with everyone we encounter but I invite you to take the time to consider how noticing cues can lead to more positive interactions with those around you.
