He was told to not sell the chair, that Big Bubba character was taylor made to be Competition for Dusty, so they had to make him look stronger than most.
Not only was that a wooden chair, but according to Cornette, the prop guy forgot to "prepare" it before Dusty used it. That was a stiff shot with the chair.
@@nealmott9154 I'm inclined to agree. It looked pretty gimmicked. But I still wouldn't want to take it. A great moment in wrestling either way. The unarmed heel bodyguard stands up to two babyfaces with weapons, until the chickenshit manager pulls the bodyguard out to save him. Some complex shit going on.
I've been searching for this for years. I wish it would have been labeled to refer to the chair shot. I remember my brother and I were watching this (back in 86 when it happened) and were in disbelief when we saw the chair shot. Then when Magnum TA came in the ring with the shovels, we just about passed out laughing. I truly miss wrestling.
Before he was in NWA, he had about nine months experience in Mid-South. Those were some really insane fans, particularly them swamp people south of New Orleans, especially with the nuclear level heat only Jim Cornette could generate with his mouth.
Black Bart in a shoot interview claims Bubba just no sells a possibly non gimmicked chair. No that was gimmicked but he did no sold it. I loved how Magnum brings in metal shovels.
Thumbs up if you sought out this footage because of Cornette's story about the prop man forgetting to gimmick the chair.
And still a no-sale by Bubba. :)
He was told to not sell the chair, that Big Bubba character was taylor made to be Competition for Dusty, so they had to make him look stronger than most.
Timestamp?
Saw it mentioned in an article. Intrigued me.
100% fact
If you watched this as a kid and Bubba no-sold that chair, you thought "Oh no. Dusty's dead."
My brother and I sure did!
its even better when when you find out that the guy who was supposed to gimmick the chair forgot
@@myeager666AW SHIT I FORGOT
The funny thing when he hit him with the chair his hat and his shades stayed thats when you know it was one lol
"Oh shit, I forgot to gimmick the chair."
Cornette was a great talker.
1 of the best managers ever.
Only Bobby Heenan was better
Ray Traylor was a true professional. RIP.
This was a way better character than "Big Bossman".
That's what you call " getting somebody over".
Jim Cornette was probably the best ever at generating heat. He could talk a mile a minute and the crowds literally wanted to kill him.
And that was an actual chair...not a gimmick chair and Big Bubba/Ray Traylor just took it like a champ. Didn't even flinch too.
Not only was that a wooden chair, but according to Cornette, the prop guy forgot to "prepare" it before Dusty used it. That was a stiff shot with the chair.
+Matt Holder Just heard that story....funniest shit ever.
It was gimmicked! they're still Kayfabe'n
This story and the coconut Piper/Snuka Kayfabe story still going around today

He had that hat on. A little protection
@@nealmott9154 Yeah, that sounds like a story to me. How the hell do you "forget" to gimmick a chair?

I look at stuff like this and think "Will this kind of wrestling ever come again?"
no
Nope. The world is too soft for another Jim Cornette
No it won’t! Their dying off, and their will never be another Blackjack Mulligan, Dusty Rhodes, Roddy Piper, etc.!
Never
Shit got real when bubba removed the chair
Ah, no one cuts a promo like Corny used to. God damn was he hatable.
2020 Baby! Fried Chicken 4 Life!!
Your videos are a great piece of History..No doubt about it..I hope the youngsters watch this..This is OLD SCHOOL at its FINEST....
This is back when wrestling was real.
Holy Shit! Bubba didn't even flinch and that was a wooden Chair.
Before Tommy Dreamer/Raven's ECW chair shot, this was the first chair shot heard round the world
How Cornette never got shot in these rural communities, I have no clue ! We could make the saints mad at him. He was that good!
Before he was in NWA, he had about nine months experience in Mid-South. Those were some really insane fans, particularly them swamp people south of New Orleans, especially with the nuclear level heat only Jim Cornette could generate with his mouth.
And just like that. Bubba was a made man.
2:51. Dusty sells it!
Again (they were supposed to gimmick the chair!)...and that might be the best no-sell in the history of the biz.
JFC Cornette truly was a magician on the mic
The original Big Bubba would have eaten ECW. Jesus.
Fuck me this IS wrestling.VINCE.TAKE NOTICE
Now get Big Bubba a liter of cola
Cousin Jim dancing around like a cheerleader
Could have been a direct hit with a steel chair and Ray wasn't going to sell it!
One of the best on the Mike !!!!!
That "MickeyMouseOperation" Jab Was Prolly No Shoot.
*GEEZ-LOISE Listen to That GirlCrowdHeat!*
Randy Mulkey got a good deal, many of us wanted to be slammed by Baby Doll.
I still do.
STW brought me here.
My poor grandmother really "hated" Jim Cornette.
The crowd pop was insane
magnum and dusty never fought fair. always hated those heels
He's right. She looked like a cross between a horse and a gargoyle.
Mouth like a machine gun.
How did that hat not fall off? Or was the hat gimmicked and not the chair?
Black Bart in a shoot interview claims Bubba just no sells a possibly non gimmicked chair. No that was gimmicked but he did no sold it. I loved how Magnum brings in metal shovels.
It was supposed to be gimmicked, but Klondike Bill (former wrestler and an assistant to the Crocketts) forgot to fix it to break easier.
No it was not gimmicked, Cornette confirmed that.
@Avahi1057 Randy Mulkey
What a terrible promo and that's excluding the rape joke that bombed
