    We have a deposit down on the XSE premium and the 50K price is a bit tough to swallow compared to a Model Y. Once you get over the Tesla hype though, the Model Y currently has awful build and paint quality, lacks any smartphone integration, heated steering wheel, cooled seats, HUD, and has pretty crap service. The prime is simply a no compromise vehicle.

      Kevin Schmidt,
      Kevin if you want to retire in your 40’s buy used low mile reliable Toyota’s like a Camry less than $20k and pay cash.
      Millionaires buy used reliable automobiles.
      People in debt drive expensive automobiles.
      How do you plan to fund healthcare if you are retired in your 40’s?
      What about college for your children?
      You better have 5 million in assets when you plan to retire with 40 years of life left in you.
      Everything will double, triple or more in price during the 40 years you plan to live in retirement.

      Kevin Schmidt, Reread my post. If you retire in your 40’s you could live for another 40 years and inflation could rob you of living on a “comfortable” standard of living.
      If you retire at 67 yrs old like most you will live on average another 15 yrs.
      There is a big difference living on savings for 40 years vs 15 yrs.
      Let us assume inflation at 3.22% annually with a million dollars in the bank.
      $1,000,000 at retirement.
      20 yrs that same million will need to be $2,000,000 to equal the same buying power.
      40 yrs that same million you started out with retiring in your 40’s will need to be 4,000,000 to sustain the same standard of living you enjoyed when you retired

    (1) 19:21 "… aside from road trips …" Are you saying that you would NOT use this vehicle for a road trip (500 miles in a single day)? With constant passing of other cars on the road, would the battery slowly run down, or would the driving times between passing other cars be enough time to restore the battery charge that was used during passing? To ask this a different way: after driving for 400 miles, would the battery still have sufficient charge available to quickly pass other vehicles? (2) I don't have any place for a plug-in charger. Would it be reasonable to charge the battery with only the gas engine while driving (that is, NEVER use a plug-in charger)?

    I tried my AAA membership, an excerpt from their response, “ The RAV4 PRIME is new for 2021, there is a long waiting list and it is not on the AAA Auto Program. Would you like to go on our waitlist? There will only be 500 units for the US built, so each dealer will only get a handful.” In other words, expect purchase price to be MSRP plus mucho $$$... so no real payback on gas savings for years. And years.

  • @dlg5485

    This vehicle has 4 or 5 different drive modes and one of them is a pure electric mode that will not turn the gas engine on at all until the battery is flat. TFL did some moderately aggressive offroading in pure electric mode and the gas engine never came on. It only came on for you because you had it in auto mode. There's also a recharge mode so you can use the gas engine to recharge your battery on the highway so it's full up when you get back to the city. You have to use the various drive modes to optimize the Prime for your driving style. I love the tech in this thing. It'll probably be my next vehicle. Although I'll wait a couple years until demand dies down and they start to deal a little on price.

  • @dlg5485
    @dlg5485 4 роки тому

    I wouldn't even consider a Tesla over this, not in a million years. 42 miles is enough range for my daily commute and when that runs out you still have the best hybrid system in the industry including a super reliable gas engine to extend your range to over 500 miles. That makes this an excellent commuter vehicle and road trip vehicle. You're right, it really is the best of both worlds.

    Just to give some perspective to the weight and handling, this thing weighs 800 lbs more than a regular Rav4 (non hybrid). Imagine driving around corners at high speed with you and 5 other passengers in a regular SUV. That's basically what it would be like driving the Rav4 prime solo around turns. The noted torque steer is no bueno.

    I’d want this RAV4 but considering the potential price tag and the wait times, for what seems to be around 40 to 50k for this hybrid, I could just as equally land a Volvo xc40 with the capability of towing up to 3500lbs and just drive it off the lot and straight home. Also I wouldn’t be able to charge at home. So most of the time I’d be using the gas engine to charge and maybe the occasional charger I see around town or at the Toyota dealership. Great concept Toyota but just not for me at this time.

    This vehicle is just a novelty since it’s a 5,000 unit compliance vehicle that the majority of Toyota dealers will never be able to sell.
    The dealers that do receive deliveries may only get less than 1 per month and then sell to the highest bidder wiping out any potential savings over buying a gas version.

    • @MattMaranMotoring

    Toyota should’ve developed this Rav4 to have the capabilities of fitting a V6.
    It would sound better, would be lighter and also handle better, would be cheaper and barely any slower (if at all), while still being able to get good fuel efficiency. Not to mention lower cost of ownership down the road.
    This is a really cool SUV and I know this type of powertrain is the future. But a V6 with better handling capabilities would be more worthy of the XSE badge.

    1 thing that comes to mind as a concern to me is how the cold engine can just fire up and go straight to high RPM with no warm up. Example..... driving in full EV mode for your "target run" when who pulls up next to you but some youngster in a civic SI with a coffee can muffler. At the next stop light you decide to show him who is faster. At the green light you stomp the throttle, that engine that hasnt turned over once for several days, fires up and goes straight to redline. Cold oil, oxygen sensors not warmed up. how can that be good for the ICE engine?

    • @MattMaranMotoring
      @MattMaranMotoring  4 роки тому

      I wondered that too, and figured Toyota would turn the engine on at least on startup to warm the engine a bit in case it's needed. But I was testing this vehicle on hot summer days where the engine doesn't get too cold, so maybe it didn't think it was necessary? Not sure.

    • @WAN2TREE4
      @WAN2TREE4 4 роки тому

      All Toyota hybrids do that, no warm ups so maybe it's not really an issue.

    • @boost331
      @boost331 4 роки тому

      @@WAN2TREE4 no they dont. most toyota hybrids are mild hybrids and use the gas engine most of the time. Plug in hybrids that can drive ONLY on electric power for a while are a totally different animal. I really like the idea, but not sure how the ICE engine reliability will hold up. the way its used goes against everything ive been taught about engines my whole life.

    • @WAN2TREE4
      @WAN2TREE4 4 роки тому

      @@boost331 I meant, all Toyota hybrids starts with the batteries, if charged, to move the car then the engine kicks in when the battery is sapped and/or when the driver demands more power. And the engine stops again when you get to the stop light no matter how short your engine "warm up" time (except in winter). Part of the strategy to save gas is engine management and that includes no warm ups. With hybrids the engine should last longer because it stops when you step on the brake and when you're downhill or cruising. Also in traffic conditions, Toyota hybrids use the battery more than the engine.

    I like it but verses my 2019 Leaf SV Plus is I never need gas and do not have to pay for oil changes. Also I charge it for free at work they they are not going to be providing Gas. If I was to trade my car paying for Gas would make it more expensive. It's hard to switch back to a gas car.

    • @wgemini4422
      @wgemini4422 3 роки тому

      Completely depends on your commute. If it's less than 30 miles, then you probably won't have to pay gas for this either unless you go on longer trips. And even if you did have say 50 miles commute, this would have cut the gas usage by 80%, which is already pretty low on the hybrid to begin with. With your charger at work (assuming it's a L2), it would actually allow you commute 80 miles both ways. Oil changes are $30-$60 once a year, not sure why people care about it so much. In the end, I think this is a great commute car for most family without a second car. Not so great for 200-300 miles round trip drives though. The concern would be battery longevity since it is charged/discharged a lot more than the Leaf's larger battery. A DC fast charge option would certainly be welcomed as well.

    Good news: Impressive vehicle. Bad news: Toyota plans to produce only 5000 units. Can you say, "market adjustment" sticker? I knew you could. Say goodbye to much, if not all, of that $7500 tax credit. That assumes, of course, that you're one of the lucky 5000. By the time it shows up on dealer lots they're likely to be sold out.

    RAV4 is 4th best seling vehicle, its not just the F150 but the Silverado and Ram that that take 2nd and 3rd. Trucks are king with cheap gas, which is going to be the question here, does a Prime model make sense at all that extra expense with super cheap gas expected for the next decade due to massive oil discoveries and overproduction? Only reason oil isn't even cheaper than it is is because governments agreed to artificially reduce production.
