Arguably more Moonshake than Dont Say No. This live version is Stunning music from Can even in their autumnal phase & what Holger conjures on the radio & dictaphone etc is truly sensational & inspirational. That a band could be this good on their last legs (soon to break up) is jawdropping, Viva Can ;-)
in the future, when I get my own space ship, I'll genetically design replicants of these guys to just play this kinda looped whilst I cruise the galaxies for lost alien artifacts.
Damo Suzuki left the band a few years before this time frame. Saw Delight (the album this song is on) was the fourth album they made after Damo left the band. I saw Damo in concert a few years ago, though. He was great. He came to Cleveland and played with Cul De Sac, doing a very Can like set. And at the end of the whole thing, he jumped off the stage and started hugging audience members, including me! I got Damo sweat on me!!!! :-)
My very favorite video on UA-cam. A bunch of very talented musicians playing an awesome original tune and obviously having a great time- what music is all about :)
Saw Delight is a great LP - not Can's finest perhaps, but a masterpiece by most other bands' standards? LOVE the "Moonshake" elements in this version btw...!
This is the first time I had heard the sounds of Can Check this version of Vit C out from the Bluenote nyc ❤️ ua-cam.com/video/A7r7SzxzLoQ/v-deo.htmlsi=QURaTFKh3rjdPR_g
This is soo awesome. Jaki must be a super humble dude to just kick back and play the drums like that when he really has the ability to go off like a madman with four genius limbs that can all have their own shit going on, completely independent of each other. Sadly, it does look a bit like they are all waiting for Damo to come down from the great acid temple in the clouds and join them though. Seems a little lost or empty maybe without him screaming like a unicorn in labour over the top of it a
Yes, I know it's well known to Can fans that Don't Say No is a rewrite of Moonshake, but not everyone is familiar with Can's music. Which is why I was looking for the studio version of Don't Say No.
I was luck enough to see them at Edinburgh University Helath Centre in 1977. I remember this track well - they probably played most of Saw Delight that night. Also remember Rosko Gee's top-hat and long scarf - awsome bass line.
I think this kind of thing from Can was a big influence on Eno and Byrne for 'Bush of Ghosts' - seems way ahead of its time with the use of samples and metronomic beat.
You should listen to Holger Czukay’s solo “Movies” if you haven’t. They all play on it and I think it’s their most magnificent moment of all! And a huge influence on Eno/Byrne and anyone else who would use the recording studio as a musical instrument.
There weren't any on the broadcast of the German Rock night. There was a Kraftwerk jam which was proto-Neu though... I think its called Koln and was uploaded at youtube.
Yes,this kinda "Vintage" Silver Surfer Jacket is on e-bay for 3000 US Dollars though, from Wonder Workshop London,no Joke !!! YT-has put down my first respond, today, with a direct link to that offer mentioned, they warned me also, since I have perpetrated YT-Regulations by doing so !!! Anyway, when I saw the CAN-Video of-Monnshake live-here on YT-not this Upload-for the first time- I was thinking exactly the same about this kinda Jacket,so I found it on the Web,then I was watching this Upload today,I thought I could share my findings, but for YT that didn`t comply !!!! Sorry for that load of telling though !!!
I think its a question of personal taste.i like Malcom Mooneys vocals more then Damos, especially on the 89-record, but I have big respect for both singers!I agree that the music was more interesting with the vocalists
die meisten damals hatten gar nicht verstanden worum sich alles dreht bei der mucke. besonders die ''Erwachsenen' lol. das wahren zeitenhahaha und ich war mitten drinnen ;-).....freu!!
It's not improvised. The basic riff appears as Moonshake on the album Future Days, and then was recycled for Don't Say No on Saw Delight. They're both almost exactly the same song.
I don't think that the influences of the lead singers from CAN were so big!The guys just looking for something strange, a new way of singing, but the essence of Can are irmin, michael, holger and, of course, jaki!
Funny, according to Jaki it was Holger who became fixated with the idea of virtuosity and he began to try too hard. Said his playing was much more interesting in the earlier years. He also cited the theft of the Mustang bass and the adoption of the Jazz bass as a clear dividing line and point of no return for Holgar as a bass player. This is from the book in The CAN Box from the late 90s.
@@slamjackson2137 all gates open the latest book states the contrary, with Holger feeling less confident, and the other players getting incredibly good, Rosko was bought in so that he could bring new sound to the band. There was other stuff, but since 76 CAN was slowly dying.
Can someone post the studio version? I was trying to prove a point about the similiarity between Don't Say No and Moonshake, but the point is made better if I could use the studio version of Don't Say No.
I dunno. That looks like Irman Schmitt on Keyboards and Holgar Czukay on radios and tape machines. Rosco Gee was a great bass player, but there is definitely a big difference between Can with Holgar and Can w/out Holgar.
I think he made it all himself. Probably got it off Blue Peter, you know, a few old cereal boxes, a telephone, a radio...here's one I made earlier etc.
he has some very odd home made fuzz which he uses alot during the entire of cans career. so i cant give u a make unfortunatly casue i dont think it is one.
GoldfishXtraCheddar I like both versions, but I read somewhere that someone in the band unplugged Holger around that time during a performance. In many ways, he was way ahead of his time and still is.

As far as I know "Future Days" pioneered that atmospheric sound you here on Dubtechno albums today.
That's because it is Moonshake, just a short clip of it.
in the future, when I get my own space ship, I'll genetically design replicants of these guys to just play this kinda looped whilst I cruise the galaxies for lost alien artifacts.
good. idea moon man
Man, you are sóóóó deep.

This question was a joke - never heard of Smashie & Nicey? 🙂
Love Jaki's drumming style. Very influential stuff, especially in the post-punk era bands.
the bass line in this song could be cans greatest... seriously...
best of can iv'e seen so far on you tube, interesting to see this stuff live.
Just got this on new vinyl great album like all there work brilliant
Rosko Gee is such a great bassist. I love it.
Saw Delight is a great LP - not Can's finest perhaps, but a masterpiece by most other bands' standards? LOVE the "Moonshake" elements in this version btw...!
Magnífica banda que no me cansaré nunca de escuchar
hacian musica que estaba hecha para años luz en el futuro

super jaki
Love this videpo. Roscoe Gee is way in the pocket.
you can't say no to this, so smooth

Holger definitely wanted to play the radio and oscillators and tape machines. He was bored of bass.
he wanted to drive a space ship to the cosmos
Too awesome for words! Thanks for this
Brilliant
Can? yes they can - best exp. Band of the world in the last 40 years and for ever in this Genre.
Catatonic audience. Awesome to see the late great Holger doing his do though.
Bkack bettys were in full swing
Thanks for that! Prehistoric future!
Rosko Gee is still a great bass player ;o)
For me this could go on for hours.
VERY VERY WELL...................................................
Amazing crowd
Yeah ! they sure do funk out.
sounds very much like moonshake
Becaude thats what it is lol.

so he chose the right bassist. another awesome period for that awesome unit
I think this kind of thing from Can was a big influence on Eno and Byrne for 'Bush of Ghosts' - seems way ahead of its time with the use of samples and metronomic beat.
You are 100% on

I like Irmin Schmidt's NASCAR jacket.
Silver Surfer Jacket no ?
There weren't any on the broadcast of the German Rock night. There was a Kraftwerk jam which was proto-Neu though... I think its called Koln and was uploaded at youtube.
RIP Holger Czukay.
WHAT A GROOVE!
Rosko is a fine bassist but really obvious and straightforward compared to Holger's understated brilliance on bass.
this is one of the baddest cuts off the record
@sweavo You're a scholar and a gentleman!
All hail Irmin Schmidt's fantastic 70's satin jacket. I want one!

at the drive-in channeled the same incoherent gibberish too
La comparaison avec d'autres morceaux est hors sujet : À l'inverse des autres groupes, Can joue d'abord et ça devient ensuite des morceaux.
just plain fuckin great
Magnificent.
The song also appears to be "Moonshake" from Future Days.
innate sense of what music should be like. true pioneers and visionaries!
Годнота!
can inCANparable. very nice always
I think you could be right, they are very similar, the guitar riff it's almost the same on "Moonshake"
@TheTrirkle awesome. I'll pilot the landing pod thing that transforms into a robot bear for ground exploration.
You don't shit, dreamsofeden! Jaki held it DOWN!
Just remember people , that if it's canned it pretty much lasts forever!!...............................
very cool
wooowwww
Класс !
@saintkot He stated in an interview that he was kind of pushed out of the position for not being technical enough.
Funny, according to Jaki it was Holger who became fixated with the idea of virtuosity and he began to try too hard. Said his playing was much more interesting in the earlier years. seems like a variation jam on moonshake
gordonlancer definitely thinking same thing
It sounds more like Moonshake than Don't Say No for sure.
niicee
Damo left after Future Days, but ur right, it is their 4th album they made after Future Days. Out of reach was rubbish except of november
Holger Czukay on keyboards.
+Wim Cosyn ...and Stephen King on guitar!
Can someone post the studio version? I was trying to prove a point about the similiarity between Don't Say No and Moonshake, but the point is made better if I could use the studio version of Don't Say No.
Awesome! Are there any Neu! or La Dusseldorf videos that you know of?
ooh its moonshake, what a nice surprise
Krautrock.....!!!!!
Prog Rock...!!!!!
Nice
Jaki rules!!Rosko Gee is a great bass-player,but why he playes on harald schmidt every week?its money that matters!RIP Michael
with all due respect to holger, but rosko gee sure is one hell of a groovy bassist here...
Dat is ma chilliger Sound
best bit is the live sampling on the phone.
whats the english word for "sekte".a religious group, but he's coming out some years later and still makes music and "singing"
@MosDef3000 No moonshake is super different its just the same punchy funk guitar riffness. none of the same notes or rhythm though
No it "IS" Just say No they both sound almost the same.. :-)
I think its well known that this is the case.
Rosko Gee. He filled in so that Holger could mess with the mix and add effects.
Its not playback...
I dunno. That looks like Irman Schmitt on Keyboards and Holgar Czukay on radios and tape machines.
Rosco Gee was a great bass player, but there is definitely a big difference between Can with Holgar and Can w/out Holgar.
where did the japanese lead singer go?
anyone knows what gear holger is using ? whats this mini mixer lookin like thing
I think he made it all himself. Probably got it off Blue Peter, you know, a few old cereal boxes, a telephone, a radio...here's one I made earlier etc.
where was it?
Like to introduce Bruce Dern on keyboards.......
where is Reebop?
he has some very odd home made fuzz which he uses alot during the entire of cans career. so i cant give u a make unfortunatly casue i dont think it is one.
was this ever on an album? or a bootleg or something?
The studio version is the first track on the Can album "Saw Delight", with lyrics and less random noise from Holger.
NoelArtMedia yeah, but i like holger's random noises and i dislike the lyrics hehe.
GoldfishXtraCheddar I like both versions, but I read somewhere that someone in the band unplugged Holger around that time during a performance. In many ways, he was way ahead of his time and still is.
The music is Moonshake from Future Days, but they rejiggered it as Don't Say No on Saw Delight.
NoelArtMedia "dont say no" on saw delight is a different song, this is just an updated version of "moonshake" thats also faster
Bit of an austere venue. The audience appear stade and rigoured, rather odd considering how good the band are!
CAN goes Kraftwerk.
CAN goes CAN. This song uses the same riffs and rhythm as Can's Moonshake from 72.
Sad that in the final days they started recycling their best riffs. i love em regardless but they went from greatness to relative awfulness.
If this is awful then it's still 100 times better than Radiohead.
Jaki's drumming tho.
The machine!
