Stuart’s eye for the landscape has never been equaled on any later episodes of Time Team. He is simply put, a genius. With a normally short explanation he manages to transform the viewers take on the entire site and point out features that the average person wouldn’t look twice at as significant…his observations of the landscape consistently leave me in awe.

    • @Invictus13666

Why? Landscape archaeology is a thing, in the us and uk. He’s far, far from special.

I think he's pretty damm good, but obviously he's on a popular TV programme which has publicised his abilities to the world, so if someone thinks of landscape archaeology, they think of Stewart, hence public opinion of his abilities being somewhat enhanced

@@Invictus13666 I suppose my main point is that, as I stated, his skills ‘have not been equaled on later episodes of time team.’ Which is true. Time team rapidly declined in quality after Mick left. I am also aware that landscape archeology ‘is a thing.’ As to why I think he is so good, I described my opinion quite clearly. Gosh, it’s almost as though you didn’t actually read my comment at all. 😂

In American K-12 schools I didn't really learn any British or Scottish or Irish history in any detail, or in College. But after watching about 50 Time Teams I think I have a pretty reasonable education in this field now. So I thank the many educators on the show for the continuing education in history, art, ceramics, anthropology, coinage, forensics, religions, peoples, migrations, pre-modern architecture, historical economics, and of course, archaeology. See? Its WAY more than just entertainment.

I just wonder if a new Time Team can fit our negative, cynical times. Yes it's sort of reality TV, but the joy is watching a group of friends work together to achieve a result. Sometimes they may bicker, but it's always resolved, and even when nothing is found in the ground we get a positive sense that learning nothing was learning something. We need such positivity more than ever now, I just hope it can fit with a world where everyone's a critic.

I think it's more likely that Phil got annoyed in the beginning as Tony didn't know how to behave in an archaeological site but as the show went on Tony learned and Phil's annoyance disappeared.

There is nothing I could dislike about these programs or people. Having watched TT before internet was common I was brought on a journey of highs and lows with experts who were a delight to enjoy and learn from. Now internet is so common and I can watch on my iPad I get to watch and enjoy all over again. Mind you I still enjoy guessing the year from Tony’s hair style and tummy. ❤

The format of the show was so sound, and with only 3 days to gather the data, give known history (based on working experience ) drawing the viewer in , along with what may have been done (causing the viewer to ponder), proof (is or is not) of what may have been done, followed up with summary. Each show maintaining a level of energy in which the viewer sees that the staff just enjoy what they do and enjoy sharing the historical value of the site.
One can only wonder that if this site was so important, was there ever a follow up on it, or was it all just re-buried.

I found the full report from the dig: www.wessexarch.co.uk/sites/default/files/68735_Friars_Wash_Redbourn.pdf
It only covers the results from the Time Team dig, and doesn’t refer to any further plans to expand on the excavations done.
I was a bit sad to find that the lead ‘curse’ sheets turned out to be more likely to be weights, possibly for fishing. 😣 I was looking forward to a great Romano-British take on the lines of “ Sosio must never do better than the mime Eumolpos. He must not be able to play the role of a married woman in a fit of drunkenness on a young horse.”
