How do you know when sprocket gear / drum should be replaced? How much wear on gear is acceptable? Thanks much. Great video.

Make sure you tell them that when the spur sprocket drum is covering the clutch you go lefty loose but the nut that holds clutch itself is backwards thred so to break it loose you turn it towards the front of the saw or the same direction that the clutch is turning, that way the nut is always trying to tighten itself when the engine is running. And with that McCulloch clutch you don't thred it on! After removing the nut clockwise to remove then you just pull it off the crankshaft, Do Not Beat on it to try turning it off! It is keyed to the crankshaft and you will break the clutch center out if you beat on it trying to turn it off! Just remember that the clutch itself always turns clockwise to remove and if the clutch drum is covering the clutch it turns left to loosen it. 😉

I have a 031AV Stihl and the clutch shoes have liners just like a drum brake shoe. One of the liners has come off. Not being worn much and the other two in good shape, I wondered if it could be reattached? None of the replacements I've found have liners. It was suggested to me to take the other two off, but I don't know about that.

I would replace them all. I have a feeling it got really hot to cause that problem and the other shoes might not be far behind.

@@Smittyschainsaws The clutch nor the drum didn't show any signs of over-heating. As I said, I haven't found a replacement with liners. All just have metal shoes. Would it do take the other two shoes off, or just order one without shoes?

The first thing I would be concerned with would be the material they are made with. The ones with pads might be steel with pads glued on and the ones without pads might be made of a softer material. If they are steel with pads glued on then you could end up with a lot of sparks. I would probably order the new ones myself.

@@Smittyschainsaws OK, but I can't find shoes and/or clutches with the linings. Will the clutch without pads work if it's for 031's? Information and parts diagrams are hard to find on Stihl equipment, in my experience.

@@John-gj1jr I have never replaced one myself so I can't be 100% certain. I think it might be the same. Try talking to another channel who's name is J&S Chainsaws. He knows a bit more about the Stihl saws than I do.
