The short was great. Also a great demonstration at how literally no one notices or cares about lighting discontinuity (the sun wildly changing its position from shot to shot) as long as the lighting looks/feels right. Well executed :D
It was the first larger budget movie I worked on, I was the accounting clerk, not the most glamorous job, but still a lot of fun, and I learned a ton. I got to go on set a few times and Christian Bale actually came into the office to say hi to everyone (though it happened on my day off). It was really amazing though to go on set and see everyone dressed up in costume. I got to briefly meet Alan Tudyk, who was all dressed up. It was a pretty fascinating experience.
I've been watching this channel for over two years now and I have one thing to say... you guys are just getting better and better! I love how you communicate with your subscribers and very much appreciate the fact that your advices and recommendations are always straight forward. Thank you guys for all the clips you made over the years because you actually made a difference, uncovered a lot of behind-the-scenes mysteries and inspired tons of people like me to fall in love with cinematography in general and with the process of movie making itself! #FilmRiotForLife
I love how every time you make something, you decide to share the awesome packs used to make the shorts. Sudden thought- your feature film is gonna rock!
I thought the getting shot parts were weak. I know it was to show how HitFilm can do effects, but it looked very unnatural at 3:26. Everything else was amazing. You nailed the noir look and now you nailed modern western. Sound and music was great too.
WOW. sorry i havent watched your videos in a couple years even though i subcribed way before then. i remember when you guys had like 20,000 subs or something liek that despite your high quality and highly entertaining videos and now i see you guys have 1.1M. im so happy for you guys
I love these behind the scenes/making of videos. Of course I love the shorts themselves too! If you are able to go more in depth with the bts cam video of takes and the video of how you recorded foley, that would knock my socks off.
Great insight guys! Really want to level up on my sound design, and it just goes to show you can't go wrong when recording everything specific for your use. But I'll still be checking out your Western pack... 😁
I think it's a good thing to reach beyond what's possible. That makes sure you hit exactly the most possible, which is what you want. If you aim for the highest possible, you'll always fall short. So yes, it's a good thing, Ryan.
Ryan, can you do a video JUST dumbing down the different style lens'es'es'es and what to use for what kind of shots? I IZ CONFUSED FOR CLOSE UPS, EXTERIOR NIGHT SHOTS, INTERIOR, ACTION, WIDE EXTERIOR DAYTIME SHOTS ON A TRACK ?? PLZ HELP, I HAZ PROBLEM!
Hey Ryan! I really enjoyed the short! Quick question for you, though. Did you have to get clearances to use an iPad and show the Apple logo? If so, I’d be curious to hear more about that process. Thanks! Mark
Just downloaded Hit Film Express.... I recently had to cancel my Adobe Cloud membership due to my new budget and I hope that this will be a good replacement temporarily.
I've downloaded HitFilm Express and looks great. But can't create any of the tutorials or insert any of the files that are provided here. Just wonderin if anyone else has this goin on there Pardner.
Hey FilmRiot, could you do a Tutorial about how you shot and edited the action / shot scenes (removing the mattress, falling from the building etc) thanks, great video!
Everytime Ryan says "and no, I don't have any affiliation to them" makes me think I'm the cause of it because a long time ago I made a comment joking about he was being sponsored by something he recommended a lot, and he responded saying no. lol.
Where do you get the mats you used for the stunts. I was just going to use an old mattress for mine and wondered if that would work for something on a tight budget.
Hey Ryan, i'm a huge fan of you and Film Riot. By the way, i'm from Germany, so please excuse my bloody english skills :D I have one question. Is the LUT working with Pinnacle Studio?
I do. But it's always good to have different perspectives, especially when editing, people's approach to solving a particular problem is not always the same
coucamaya Ah ok, I've been using HitFilm for a long time and own HitFilm Pro and my biggest advice is to practice a ton! The more familiar your are with the software the easier things are, watch all the effect videos you can, they really help you get familiar with it faster then anything!
Micah Foster - When shooting in daylight, usually you just modify the light with diffusers and bounce boards and stuff since you'll never have a light that;l be ,ore powerful than the sun.
The short was great. Also a great demonstration at how literally no one notices or cares about lighting discontinuity (the sun wildly changing its position from shot to shot) as long as the lighting looks/feels right. Well executed :D
I actually worked on 3:10 to Yuma, so I really enjoyed this short.
+The Every Maker - formerly Nickbox WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!? That's amazing.
+The Every Maker - formerly Nickbox WHAAAAAAAAAAAAAT!? That's amazing.
The Every Maker - formerly Nickbox what did you do in the film?

The Every Maker - formerly Nickbox wow that's awesome! Unlucky about Bale though ahaha but sounds like an awesome experience!

I love it when you create tools for your own use and then we get to buy them. I don't use LUTs, but the sound pack is definitely coming home!
OK...you now have western LUTS and sound effects?!? We've never met, but I feel you love me.
Signed,
Santee (The Scourge of Tucson)
Arizona Ghostriders lol I’m making a western feature and was watching your videos to learn up on wardrobe and guns. Awesome😂
I love how every time you make something, you decide to share the awesome packs used to make the shorts. Sudden thought- your feature film is gonna rock!
And here I was super impressed with the C300 mk2. Just to find out you used the Alexa mini.
took the words out of my mouth. that alexa is sex tho
I agree. But just so you don't lose faith, this guy got some impressive results with an anamorphic converter on a c100 vimeo.com/120220210
Woah dude, just wooow, these behind the scenes videos are so well made, they're literally so enjoyable to watch!
Hats off to you guys!
Thanks Ryan and the film riot guys! DJANGO is my favorite film of all time! And now I have a lut and some inspiration! I couldn't thank you enough!
I thought the getting shot parts were weak. I know it was to show how HitFilm can do effects, but it looked very unnatural at 3:26. Everything else was amazing. You nailed the noir look and now you nailed modern western. Sound and music was great too.

You are not the only one
Angelina Nichols Best of luck!
Great insight guys! Really want to level up on my sound design, and it just goes to show you can't go wrong when recording everything specific for your use. But I'll still be checking out your Western pack... 😁

+Cinematography Database Yeah man. It's solid too.

Ryan, you and your family are the best thing that happen to UA-cam in filmmaking, i thank you- the mentor i never had #network
Great BTS!!! Love all that you do!!! Keep up the great work!!
Even sponsoring a free editing software?? The world doesn't love you enough!!
people were complaining about the boot sounds on the other video but I think it sounds awesome!!
+Otniel Manary so do I. It was purposeful to be aggressive. A nod to the old westerns (which I love their sound)
Film Riot I can't wait till you guys make a full length movie 😍
So cool. This short was one of my favorite ever. Was so cool and I'm so excited to continue following Film Riot!

Hey Ryan!
I really enjoyed the short! Quick question for you, though. Did you have to get clearances to use an iPad and show the Apple logo? If so, I’d be curious to hear more about that process.
Thanks!
Mark
Are you guys ever going to do any film festivals?
Seeing you guys at Sundance would be awesome!
What about the dialogue, was it recorded on set, or ADR?
I have tried so many times to buy the luts now but i keep getting declined!!! What is happening??

I've downloaded HitFilm Express and looks great. But can't create any of the tutorials or insert any of the files that are provided here. Just wonderin if anyone else has this goin on there Pardner.
Had no idea you guys were based in DFW. That's awesome!! Texas deserves more of a film scene.
Texas' film scene is actually rapidly advancing and growing. Now is a good time to jump in if you live in the area.
Deangelo Scott true, true.
When's the western sound effect pack going to be coming out??
This looks great. I may just get some of these old western packs

Everytime Ryan says "and no, I don't have any affiliation to them" makes me think I'm the cause of it because a long time ago I made a comment joking about he was being sponsored by something he recommended a lot, and he responded saying no. lol.
Also, cant wait for the bts vids on this with bloopers. :)
This was awesome! :)
Ryan could u plz review a Sony f55 4K camera
Can someone explain the blank guns direct a bit more? Are they just really solid replicas, real guns, or guns that only shoot blanks?
judging By the fact that the shotgun broke in half I'm gonna go with replica as for the sound one I am unsure but I assume blanks
I have an urge to make a western now
#filmmakerproblems
Ethan Rodgers Me too! Maybe it will be a Monday challenge, give me an excuse to drop my old ideas and make a Western!
Me too
I decided to go and build an entire saloon from scratch because I want to make a western
Where are you guys? Know any western looking towns in Georgia?? Around Alpharetta or Atlanta

How to make a western: add a welhiem scream
Damn Film Riot you've done it again!!!
Great video like always guys
Hey Ryan! I'm glad you're talking a bit slower now :)
Where do you get the mats you used for the stunts. I was just going to use an old mattress for mine and wondered if that would work for something on a tight budget.
Yes it would work, BUT they aren't solid/thick. Look into gynastics mats.
Thanks for the help
does anyone have any tips on making a western short film? Currently in pre-production..
Hey Ryan, i'm a huge fan of you and Film Riot. By the way, i'm from Germany, so please excuse my bloody english skills :D
I have one question. Is the LUT working with Pinnacle Studio?
You forgot to set the LUT video from the link to public, now it's set on private.

hey Ryan is this Western LUT Pack works for the pocket 6k ?
What’s the price like to film here ??
please tell us whats free in that software and whats not free... as much as i know the last one that they said its free it was free but no effects in
How come Todd hasn't been in any film riot short films lately?
When you go on a remote location, how do you go about lighting a scene quietly? I only have a loud generator. Any suggestions?
Use battery powered lights, or run cable to the generator farther away.
Deangelo Scott I can't afford them. That's a very obvious one otherwise.
Deangelo Scott the goal is to keep it close. I can run the cords to an outlet that's far away.
Micah Foster - When shooting in daylight, usually you just modify the light with diffusers and bounce boards and stuff since you'll never have a light that;l be ,ore powerful than the sun.
Scott Sullivan thank you! I'm actually doing a nightshoot though.
can you do any visual effects from bahubali the conclusion pls
Will the LUT Pack still work just as well with the latest versions of Premiere and Davinci?
Please what’s the name of the effect that they used on their movie
This was great!
Wow filming with an ARRI, so DIY !! So riot !!!
