- Sudha Ragunathan is a popular Carnatic vocalist, playback singer and composer. She learned Carnatic music under Dr. ML Vasanthakumari in the gurukula style. She is the only Carnatic musician who has sung in United Nations after Bharat Ratna M S Subbulakshmi. She was awarded Kalaimamani (1994) by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Padma Shri (2004) and Padma Bhushan (2015) by the Government of India.

"ஜாதி" அல்ல.
Sir, efforts is not also necessary. If an average person goes for anything with an interest, everything is possible for them, even if they are steady and regular. 75 percent they can win in everything for (non-bramins) very easily. No other group should discourage. The beauty of nagaswaram and thavil players playing the instrument ( they are extremely exceptional ) is a great example. Even the singers mostly do not know the exact meaning of tel. and sans. Songs and knowledge on TELUGU and sanskrit. Can she, Sudha write a song one number in TELUGU or in sanskriit? Veen bantha. She didn’t answer it well. But I think the point (I hope) she was trying to make was that it needs training & passion to learn & understand it , so it is difficult to reach all audiences like a film song. Some ppl like Sanjay Subramanuam sing Tamil songs a lot , which makes a huge difference too, to bring everyone to listen & appreciate & hopefully learnt. Just like Western classical is different from say a pop music album & only learnt by a few. But ppl like Illayaraja have helped the cause by introducing it in film music so that everyone can get a taste of it, but now a days even the film music has become more electronic.

She has never replied it belongs to one community. She is saying it has to be learnt! Anyone learning with that deep inclination is essential. It is very complex for sure! It has become very common to just accuse Brahmins in Tamil Nadu! For anything that is talked there are people to so aggressively accuse! If you don't accept move on. Don't write dirty on media! Remember this is the same hatred brahmins have on reservations - a deserving child in the name of community never get their share. Brahmins don't sit and write hatred for this every year. Talent does not belong to any community. All deserving people deserve their credible seat!

Not only Carnatic music all fields are like that only. political people , fisher men , carpenter , mason etc perticular community do the same business grandfather, son, grandson. Example in leather business muslims are topper in gold marwardi are good. Even though anirud is bramin he can't shine in Carnatic music field this depends on their skill not depend on community.
Whether you all like it or not, they have carried the music for decades on their shoulders....they have the perseverance to excel in it...their contribution is huge...others and some christian missionaries may portray them in the negative light...first, they would tarnish the artists, then they would say waste praying to Hindu Gods and singing kritis...using casteism and pagutharivu!!!!
If you show determination and strong passion, you could achieve anything ..stop blaming others for your own shortcomings...and be gentle in your comments...ladies deserve respect even if they are your enemy...unless it is not emphasized in your upbringing...

My God these haters go at any length. This is like comparing any employee working in a software company is a software developer. It isn’t, right? Well over the years that “kurupitta janangal” have liked the complex structure and have formed affinity groups accordingly. But that doesn’t mean it is restricted to only certain community. If you think like that then stalwarts like Ustad Bismillah khan or Yesudas won’t have existed. Carnatic music has been welcoming any person who has genuine interest and dedication. It is neither restricted to caste nor religion. Still have doubts, go to Chennai Kalakshetra and see how diverse the students are!
This is the truth! I am related to a leading Carnatic musician ( a Sangita Kalanidhi ) . I can’t help but stress the amount of time and dedication he has spent to master the art.

You have completely misunderstood her. Neither Illayaraja nor ARR are doing Carnatic music kacheris. They mearly use a certain raga to compose . Some of the best movie songs are based on carnatic ragas. But Film music does not have a rigid structure like Carnatic music. A raga is based on swarams and a combination of these swaras leads to the ragam or melody.
A person well versed in Carnatic music can understand any kind of music. Firstly you need to understand this!
Now a lot of people are learning with the advent of social media .it is accessible and many teachers are coming forward to teach interested students....Anything can be learnt if we aspire sincerely.

@Velavan Vlogs i m proud to say i belong to 4th Varnam...infact I m the one who can attain moksha or easily loved by God...varnas are based on occupation i belong to a agriculture family...they say 4th varnas are people born at the lords feet...in each n every temple people likes to see the feet only and they say we will surrender at lords feet...in that case my Varna is at the top list...only people will say but not god... according to him every one is equal...that is my point...again it's based on occupation only not by birth or caste...

Classical art in any form even western classical is difficult . Eddhulla jathi enga vandhadhu.. jesudhas learnt it.. illayaraja learnt it.. most of the teachers those days were brahmins and they did teach to eager students... but currently there is only politics.
U can always start with a simple raga and learn the complex ones . The one who is commenting u can’t sing as soon as u hear it also had to practice her whole life from 4 or 5 to get where she is… its easy once you learn anything stop giving bullshit…

Truly you folks are enemies of your own art. Art form will be alive only when its available across the people. Its matter of practice and time. That’s what she is saying. You can’t sing just like that. You have to learn from a good guru and keep practicing. I have learnt Carnatic music for several years . To master it requires practice and patience. Comments like Thimuru and arrogance are unwarranted.Even the great KJ Yesudas had a guru to learn from.
