Sudha Ragunathan is a popular Carnatic vocalist, playback singer and composer. She learned Carnatic music under Dr. ML Vasanthakumari in the gurukula style. She is the only Carnatic musician who has sung in United Nations after Bharat Ratna M S Subbulakshmi. She was awarded Kalaimamani (1994) by the Government of Tamil Nadu, Padma Shri (2004) and Padma Bhushan (2015) by the Government of India.

The interview with Sudha madam is an eye opener to aspiring carnatic musicians. She has shared the hardest path with which her musical journey travelled and the decades of work he did has catapulted her to this pinnacle of glory and success in the field.
In my opinion, the various reasons why Scope and practice of Carnatic music is limited and subjected to least interest from folks shall include
1. Gurus do not pass on the hard earned skills to disciples
2. Many now can listen anything on carnatic seamlessly on net on comparative basis
3. Language complications discourage many as the meanings are not understandable
4. There is no certainty of securing long term life of the practioners
5. Unlimited travel inhibits the interest
6. Self learning from web is easy and one can develope one's own style of singing
7. Old gurus have limited skill as they learnt from Gurukulam on long time basis and were under the mercy of Guru
8. Gurus demand exorbitant fees secretly
9. The sheer scale and expanse of the carnatic songs frighten beginners
10. World is faster than before and hence there is lack of patience
11. More so, songs are bakthi based and non belivers do not take interest to learn and sing
12. Certain people sacrifice and those who do so are only interested
13. With litle background, learners want to hit famous through cine songs and it restricts stock of songs
14. Multi culture and digital preferences force them not to take carnatic as life plan
15. Overseas Indians take interest in Carnatic because of migrant parents pressure initially as they cannot do other things successfully there
16 Online classes lack completeness and disconnect them to have face to face imparting and correcting disciples
17. There is no standard for carnatic sings as different stalwarts sing differently though foundation standards are well designed
18. Not everybody's voice is suitable for singing
19. Too much time is to be invested amidst pressure from eduction and survival
20. Limited viewers and listeners for carnatic music
21. Concentration of greats and sabhas in only slected location depriving onsite listening
22. People out of selected locations cannot come up from outside as lobby in specific location
23 There is a stigma that Carnatic music is designed for specific community
24 Not all have patience to listen carnatic songs and many parents of other communities are least interested in development
25, Carnatic system involves many accompanists which singers cannot secure through payments
26. Low pay and no standard of compensation is established

Very good interview.Any sensible music lover will agree what sudhaamma says about the prevalence of a particular community domination in Carnatic music.Carnatic music like Vedha learning comes under guru shishya type.Like a king who wins a fort after many attempts without abandoning the efforts Carnatic music has to be learned in a hard way.TM K knows the ground situation well but to gain popularity he makes it as a big issue.
Just tell me which field is not like that? Sculptor will teach his son, tailor teaches his son. But I have never seen anyone one deny teaching if someone approaches a music teacher. TMK is simply trying to create controversy for his personal gains.
Very intelligent way of giving explanations by Sudha and a great singer🎉 very nice to listen to and Carnatic music cannot be sung by anyone but by people who are dedicated to practice and learn and listen and practice for years !😊

I completely disagree with the statement that carnatic music is only for a particular community - -
firstly, music is beyond language , caste, creed & community ; it's open to anybody; nobody can stop anyone from learning this music ;
secondly , nobody can learn music only because they belong to a particular community ; they should have the interest & talent ; they have to work very hard ; they need to put in so much time & effort to become a singer ; nothing comes easily without hard work & dedication ;
thirdly, carnatic music has a wide range of audiences not only in India , but from various foreign countries as well ;
finally, music has no boundary & there's no restrictions for those who want to learn or listen to any music form ; no community can control them !! stop finding fault with a community & giving lame excuses ;
btw, not all the carnatic musicians & the accompanying instrument players belong to any one particular community only !! pl go thro'the success story of each singer & u'll know how they worked hard to reach there !! 👍👍

ஆரம்ப உரையாடல் தலையும் புரியல காலும் புரியல. ஒருவரை முதன்முறையாக பேட்டி எடுக்கும் போது basicகான கேள்விகளை (உதாரணத்திற்கு பிறந்த ஊர், குடும்ப பின்னணி, பொற்றோர்களின் விவரம்,என்ன படிப்பு, திருமண வாழ்க்கை, etc.,)கேட்டுவிட்டு அதன் பின் அவரது வளர்ச்சி, சாதனைகளை பேசினால் முதன்முறையாக (off the stage)இவரைப் பார்ப்பவர்களுக்கு இவரின் மேன்மைகள் புரியும்.அதைவிடுத்து இவரைப்பற்றி நன்குஅறிந்த அவரது சமூகத்திற்காக மட்டுமே பேட்டி எடுத்தது போல் உள்ளது.
தமிழ் தெரிந்த அத்துனை தரப்பினரம் பாடகியை அறிந்து கொள்ளுமாறு பேட்டியும், கேள்வி பதிலும் அமைந்திருந்தால் நன்றாக இருந்திருக்கும்.முதலில் MLV யார் என்பது தெரியாமல், பாடகியின் பெற்ற தாய் என்று நினைத்துக்கொண்டோன்.அதன்பின் பேட்டியை தொடர்ந்து பார்த்த பிறகுதான் தெரிந்தது MLV அவர்கள் பாடகியின் குரு என்று.மேலும் MLV யார் எண்பதை Google search மூலம் தெரிந்து கொண்டேன்.

Carnatic music has to be nursed from very young age, persuasion and dedication. Those who do this they come out successfully after several years. Caste does not play a role. My father was a student of Annamalai University, learnt music from Chittoor Subramani Pillai and Rajagopala Pillai and got all the medals during 4years course. Regarding Ms Sudha's mother, if I am correct, her mother, Choodamani, was a student of Embar and when she along with her father came to Delhi some time during 1965-68, she was asked by my father, who was Sangeetha Bushanam, to perform harikatha at our house. She did Thiru neela Kanta Charitram. This was her first performance after graduation. Music does not have caste.

1930களில் ரிக்ஷாகாரர்கள்கூட கர்நாடக சங்கீதத்தை ரசித்ததை நாம் கேள்விப்படுகிறோம். அந்த கால கட்டத்தில் திரையிலும் கர்நாடக இசையை ஒட்டியே பாடல்கள் அமைந்தன. காலங்கள் ஓடிய பின்பு , திரையில் மெல்லிசை வந்த பின்பு பெருவாரியானவர்கள் அதை ரசிக்க, கர்நாடக இசை ஒரு குறிப்பிட்ட இனத்திற்கு உரித்தாயிற்று. எந்தையார் கர்நாடக இசைப் பிரியர். வீட்டில் ரேடியோ கூட கிடையாது. 60களில் கிராமத்து ரேடியோ ரூமில் ஐயர் வாள் உற்சவத்தைக் கேட்பார். அம்மக்கள் " என்ன இது ஐயர் பாட்டு ஓடுகிறது" என்பார்கள்.

The interviewer locate the Raagas frequently. We people used to locate it only after," தாயே யசோதா உந்தன் ஆயர் குலத்துதித்த" as claimed by Mrs.Sudha Raghunathan. It is by and large practised by a particular community and the complexity of the subject does not allow others to practice with. It needs lot of passion and time to practice. Little bit costly also. No scope for commercial viability. Let it be the property of a perticular community. Be great enough to accept it.
That is because Carnatic music requires hard work discipline and devotion .
To day do other communities have .
Even many Brahmins do not have .
That is the reality .
Many other fields offer better oppurtunities

Does not matter. The so-called south Indians have stolen the folk and ancient Tamil classical forms without attribution. Look at the reach of folk instruments mentioned in Silapathikaaram and we still see; see how the elite have reduced it to a few they can handle well. Parochialism is part of Indian culture. NI brahmin lived with a great Muslim, learned the art, married his daughter, and ditched her and everybody to become popular throughout the world. He finally married a Tamil lady, gave birth to one more child, and passed away. Is she a NI or SI.
Such lies in this interview. Sudha has been politically correct in this interview; her personal truth is a far cry from all that was said here.

If they are not allowing, what about Devars, Mudaliyars, Gounders, Naidus... This is புல்ஷிட். You guys talk that brahmins don't allow anyone but don't talk the caste of nayanmars.

In 2003 when I was 8 I was not allowed to sing on the stage citing caste as the reason my teacher was Brahmin she recommended but I wasn’t allowed so there r good as well as bad guys everywhere that time I dint no how to react now am a civil servant I will trash such weeds if I come across any such guyzzz they are working against the interests of 🇮🇳 integrity integration and development

2. Illayaraja suddenly being inducted into politics.
3. Dhanush acting in a biopic on Illayaraja.
4. Dhanush’s rushed visit to the Ram Mandir inauguration.
5. Now, G & J raising this issue with TM Krishnan being awarded by Madras Academy. Madras Academy has been criticised for the longest time on being discriminatory towards non-Brahmins and not giving opportunities for non-Brahmins to perform on their Sabha.
Please don’t empathise with them. These two might lose their membership in Madras Academy. But, BJP will make sure that they are booked into every Sabha in the rest of the world.

பாரம்பரிய இசையை ரசிப்பவர்கள் ஆதரிப்பவர்கள் மிகவும் குறைவு. உண்மையான ஈடுபாடு, உழைப்பு, குரல் வளம் எல்லாம் இருந்தாலதான் முன்னுக்கு வர முடியும். இதில் சாதி எங்கேயிருந்து வந்தது. மதுரை சோமு, பிடில் ராஜமாணிக்கம் பிள்ளை, M.S. சுப்புலடசுமி, K.B. சுந்தராம்பாள், சீரகாழி கோவிந்தராஜன், M.M தண்டபாணி தேசிகர், சிதம்பரம் ஜெயராமன், கழுகுமலை கந்தசாமி, இளையராஜா, பிரபல நாதஸ்வர வித்வான்கள், இன்னும் பல பிராமணரல்லாதவர்கள் புகழ் பெற்றவர்களாக இருந்ததை யார் தடுத்தார்கள். இதே மாதிரி கேள்விகளைத்தான் திரு சந்தானம் அவர்களிடமும் கேட்டு உள்ளீர்கள். பிராமண சமூகத்தை யார் வேண்டுமானாலும் என்ன கேள்வி வேண்டுமானாலும் கேட்கலாம் என்ற நினைப்பா?

ஒரு சமூகத்துக்கு மட்டும் இல்லை இசை. ஆனால் இசைக்கும் கலைஞர்கள் யார் என்பதில் மாற்று கருத்து இருக்க தான் செய்யும். கலை விரிவடைந்து அதன் நுட்பத்தை நோக்கி நகரும். அப்பொழுது அது ஒரு கட்டுமானத்தில் இயங்கும். சாதாரணமாக ஒலிக்கும் ஒலி அதன் ரம்மியத்தை சாதகம் மூலம் அடைவார்கள். அது விழிம்பு நிலை கலைநர்களுக்கு சாத்தியம் இல்லாமல் சென்று விடுகிறது. அதற்கு பல காரணங்கள். அன்றாட வாழ்க்கை சூழல், மற்றும் வேலை நிமித்தமாக அவர்களால் அடையமுடியாமல் சென்று விடுகிறது. முதலில் அதற்கான சூழல் அமைய வேண்டும், பிறகு தான் கலை வளர முடியும்.
இசை மட்டும் வைத்துக்கொண்டு பிழைப்பு நடத்த முடியும் என்பதை விரல் விட்டு எண்ணி விடலாம். பெரும்பான்மையான மக்களுக்கு சூழல் அமையும்போது எல்லாம் எல்லோருக்கும் சாத்தியமே.
இன்னும் நுண் அரசியல் பார்வையோடு பார்தால் தனிப்பட்ட கருவி வாசிப்பவர் பின் தங்கிய நிலையில் தான் உள்ளனர். உதாரணமாக புல்லாங்குழல் கலைஞர்களுக்கு போதிய அங்கீகாரம் கிடைக்க வில்லை என்பது உண்மையே..
பழமை என்று பொருள்படும் சொல்லான கர்நாடிக் என்னும் வார்த்தையை வைத்து பழமையான பண்பட்ட இசை வடிவமான தமிழிசை தான் கர்நாடக இசையாகும். அதை கர்நாடக பிரதேச இசை என்று அடிக்கடி தவறாக கூறுகிறார்கள். அது கர்நாடக பிரதேச மண்ணில் தோன்றிய இசை இல்லவே இல்லை. வடமொழியான சமஸ்கிருதத்தில் கர்நாடிக் என்றால் பழமை என்றே பொருள். உலகத்தின் ஆதி இசையான தமிழிசையை பழந்தமிழிசை என்றே அழைப்பார்கள். அந்த பழமையான (thamizh classical music) ல் இருந்து தமிழிசையில் உருவான பழமையான இசை வடிவத்தை தான் பிற்காலத்தில் தமிழ் பொருளான (meaning) பழமை என்ற பொருளை சமஸ்கிருதத்தில் கர்நாடகம் என்றும் கர்நாடிக் என்றும் அழைத்தார்கள். எடு.கா : காலத்திற்கு ஏற்ப மாறாமல் தன்னுடைய பழைய கருத்தில் நிற்பவர்களை பழமைவாதி , சுத்த கர்நாடகம் என்பார்கள். கர்நாடகம், கர்நாடிக் என்றால் பழமை என்ற பொருளில் பழமையான இசையை கர்நாடிக் இசை என்றார்கள். பழமையான தமிழிசையில் ஊருவான இசையையே கர்நாடிக் இசை, கர்நாடக இசை என்றார்களே தவிர அது கர்நாடக பிரதேசத்தில் தோன்றிய இசை அல்லவே அல்ல. கர்நாடக இசை என்பது பழமையான இசை வடிவமான தமிழிசையே !
