This episode of Here and Now is from a recording of a study group on aging hosted by Ram Dass in 1995.
In the face of aging and death, part of the spiritual work we should consider doing is what Ram Dass calls the art of how to bring the past into the present. Using the example of his mother’s death, he shares the importance of processing events from our past with the perspective we hold in the present.
We can also bring the past into the present in a cultural and historical context. Ram Dass leads an exercise centered around the atomic bombing of Hiroshima, having us contemplate and recognize that we are part of a culture that has models of reality that would legitimize the dropping of that bomb.
Ram Dass explores the issue of grieving, especially as it relates to aging and loss. He reads a letter he had written to a family who lost their young daughter, and he talks about the importance of moving from the realm of ego to the realm of the soul.

i used to be like that, i'd typically skip it, wouldn't comment, although maybe in my journey i might've. it is funny to me, seeking out Ram Dass and then having this attitude towards the uploader, that anger or mind is the opposite of his message. Are you further along your journey now?

@@mmmmmm-z7j my comment is about the actions a person chooses to make. i found it interesting that a whole host of amazing content is shared for free, and any additions they don't like can also be skipped. so why would a person seeking to listen to ram, be some ''angry'' shall we say, that they needed to go in the comments and say it, are the hoping the uploader randomly reads the comment or are they venting some frustration on an open forum to no one who cares.
i havent implied anything about being further along the way, i do not compare to others or judge others, i said i once may have vented bottled negative energy in such a way but it is really not the way to spend your time imo and hoped the person was further along their journey towards a calm mind.... it isnt a competition and was no flex, thanks for your input.

Hang on a minute, i could have sworn that Ram Dass has told a different story about how his mother died...didnt he say that he was with her and she asked him to sit him up and she took three breaths like a tibetan llama and died in his arms? Hes definitely told a different version before, like where her head was too weak to hold up on her own so he had her head rest on his shoulder. Im confused. Am i living in two different timelines simultaneously rn?
I’ve heard that too, but I’m thinking that could be his step-mother - he had a closer relationship to her while she was dying (and was older/more mature/wiser). Isn’t that right?
@@alexiarohdin879 Yes, his mom died of spleen before he met his Guru and his step mom was the one who died like a Tibetan Lama, in the 80's If I remeber correctly.
