You should really do a series on architect's own homes. I think it's interesting to show their more unrestrained side and how they live.
Yes that would be great. It would especially be interesting to see the homes of those architects who weren't wealthy and didn't have millions of dollars to build their home.
thats a fantastic idea. I love seeing fashion designers homes, much less architects
I am more than happy to share with AD my 3 bed, shoe-sized rental apartment shared with 5 other people!
@@jackludo738Haha most people seem to think every architect is wealthy which simply isn’t the case but I do still think it’s interesting to see how architects design their own spaces (when they get the chance). Do these spaces and their ideas align with how they design buildings for others? There are a lot of external pressures on the profession that means that visions are diluted because of other requirements when working with clients. I think we get a greater sense of what they believe in, if we see what they live in.
The way things are going maybe that rental will be the height of luxury for the common architect. A future we can all look forward to. From cradle to coffin, Ikea style, instructions included.
Up
When I moved to Oregon in October of 1992 and started my freelance photography business here in the PNW. I made a 'cold call' to meet architect Robert Oshatz and show my portfolio as I was first focusing on Architectural and Editorial work. He invited me out to his home featured in this video. It was one of those unanticipated meetings, where our conversation lasted several hours as we discussed architecture, art, design, nature, travel, and a list of other topics we found in common. He gave me a full tour of this "Elk Rock Residence," which he had only been living in for just a few years. It really was an incredible structure and use of the site along the Willamette River. In the past several years, I've wondered about the house and his work as an architect, so finding this video today was a fascinating trip back almost 30 years and visiting this treetop home.
I would much rather see a uniquely designed house like this than a celebrity's house.
@@KECarter I can enjoy them both.
I read this comment out loud to my grandpa, Robert. It was so funny to see him stare at me blankly while I read, until he started grinning wildly saying “I remember him!”
@@elijahoshatz5248 That’s beautiful.
Very cool. Thanks for sharing
i have no words. this is just incredible. the peaceful feeling that house gives is so special!
are you kidding me? nice crib but the exterior screams everything but peaceful lmao its so flashy
Love this house as well. Mr. Oshatz really understands flow and designs with emotions. Also the 80s influences in all the built ins are giving me LIFE. This house is a liveable art. Also the facade reminds me of the Cadillac Eldorado and it's everything.
i bet when the light is on it look like something from outerspace that is about to take off.
im not sure the feeling of a intergalactic runway is my idea of peacefull
Wish it was my house.
Bro put an eyesore on top of a hill. Tf you going on about?
Obsessed with this one. Love that he is the designer and owner. The fact that it was built in 1988 is even nicer - he was ahead of his time.
From the outside a fancy space-ship, from the inside just a calm, serene, reasonable, light and open living space.
My thoughts exactly. The 70s kid in me is saying it's my dream house and in most ways near retirement me is agreeing 😁
it feels like an office
The fact that he gave jobs to underprivileged teens for this instead of hiring a huge team of builders speak volumes. Most people would be way too precious to do this. This man gets it. What a legend.
I'll tell you one thing. Under privileged kids didn't build that stonework. That looks professional to me.
he's an angel
This is one of the most amazing house I've ever seen. I love it.
I love retro futurisim for this exact reason. It looks like it was made a while ago yet it still look futuristic, like from another planet.
I grew up next door to this home and spent many evenings running through the backyard/orchard area making my way to my friends houses down by the river. I’ve lived in Australia for a decade now and never thought I’d see this home again. What a surprise!
I was in my second year of college, studying Civil Engineering in hopes of becoming an Architect before I moved from NY to CA in order to live the beach life. I planned on continuing my studies when I arrived, but I got a decent job in computer tech and never completed my degree. The last semester I enrolled in, I had designed a circular "tree house" (sitting on a hill side), whereas the whole house could spin on a rotor in order to expose specific rooms to sunlight while hiding others in the landscape/grade. My CADD Professor was so impressed with my design that he told me he had showed it to his colleagues. That was in 1996. This video actually makes me sad that I went on another path, because my goal was to eventually make that home come true, and in many aspects this home resembles what I had envisioned.
You can always still do it. Who says that you can't be an Architect because you want to for yourself?
That sounds amazing! Why not still try to make the house a reality now? It would be so awesome to see something like that come to life and live in it. I would seriously consider it if I were in your shoes.
*Don't worry you aint alone. Many have plans of becoming something else and they end up being something else. My career was to be an Air hostess and I don't know how I ended up being a Teacher. I quited Teaching after 8 years, now switching to fashion and designing* 😆🤷♀️
Never too late!!
Sounds a lovely house 😊
Normally I don’t like wall to wall carpeting and yet here it’s amazing. This home is a work of art, I love that people with struggles like drug addiction etc helped to build this. What this man did was give these workers not only work but an experience of a lifetime and knowledge in building.
Not to detract from the sentiment here, but most buildings in America are built by people addiction problems
@@PeepsThatDoStuff Caffeine being the most widely accepted addiction.
@@-._.-KRiS-._.- Probably because most caffeine addicts don’t and wont consume fatal amounts of caffeine, considering how hard it is to do so. And also because caffeine has some good effects when taken in moderation
@@PeepsThatDoStuff this is a top quality comment
You mean he got the cheapest labor he could 😂
This is incredible! I love how he described everything too, the feelings he was trying to elicit, etc… magical. Such an inspiring man.
I love how rich people spend so much on their houses it looks like crap while poor people have no houses LOL
@@hendrixj.8356 I love how jealous people focus on others who work hard all their lives, and ignore their own lack of hard work. LOOLOOLLLOOOL! HILARIOUS! 🤣🤣🤣🤣😂😂😂😅😆🤔😁😁🤔🤡
When he spoke of listening to the poetry of a location, I’ve never heard an Architect or builder talk like this. I got chills. Look at the magical results.
This is my absolute dream home. Integration of nature and imagination. And, built by hands that needed structure. This is truly poetic in so many ways.

Some architects truly are artists. Mr. Oshatz is one of these architects. Having also closely overseen the construction, working with an inexperienced builder shows his expertise for the craft early on in his career. Robert is in the category of master builder. This work is truly a thoughtful expression in the landscape.
This entire story is as beautiful as the house. I love the reason he chose to build and the people he chose to build with him. The house itself is amazing, it looks alive, it has its own story to tell.
One of the most gorgeous houses I've ever seen. The exterior, the interior, the decoration, the environment... Living there would be like a dream.
I can always find something to appreciate in different styles and tastes, but holy cow. this property is immaculate. Every single thing about it is perfection. I could've never dreamt this up in a million years. What an incredible home.
An excellent quote from Robert Oshatz's website:
"Architecture is a synthesis of logic and emotion. When carried to its logical conclusion, a traditional design approach produces very imaginative structures. It is only a question of how much of an artist we architects choose to be."
I love how he gives people opportunities to work and experience on this property
Ah yes, the "opporuntity" for kids to build his house free of charge, what a guy lol.
@@cosmicmegafauna Can you provide the source that this was unpaid / without stipend?
I'd like to know if these kids were paid for their time or just "given the opportunity" to build for him.
@@cosmicmegafauna where did he say it was unpaid?
It's a valid concern, but at the same time it's also jumping to conclusions about Oshatz's character.
This is such a beautiful home
This man….. tears are running down my face. Beautiful idea, beautiful structure. Spot on brother, spot on. 🌞
A true visionary .
This architect is an old hippie at heart. This has obvious mid century modern esthetics with
an "I can fly with my feet on the ground" mood. It's quite something.
I'd live there.
Sitting in NY this morning, scrolling through UA-cam and came across this video.
The thumbnail looked so vaguely familiar and I couldn’t place why.
As soon as I saw the view overlooking Elk Rock Island, I knew.
I grew up in Portland, OR directly across the river at an apartment complex. I’d sit on our balcony every day staring at the houses across the river. I was always so curious about this one in particular.
Thank you AD for quenching my childhood curiosity!
A Visionary who harmonizes with his environment - Absolutely Love his wholistic design approach!
This is very unique and I love how it's nestled & hidden within nature.
INCREDIBLE. So humbled by humans' creativity and achievements, and he is so humble at it. Thank you for bringing this.
This fellow is really something. Not much from that 80s vernacular is worth preserving, much less celebrating. But this is an extraordinary house. It just showcases what a truly gifted architect is capable of achieving when there is no meddlesome client in the way.
I have always been a city boy and never wanted to own a house. Here I am approaching 60 and I discover the first and only house I'd ever want to live in. Breath-taking!
Make him an offer.
This house is wearing incredibly well for its age. It's so beautifully crafted that it transcends the now dated decor (a style which gives me maximum hygge and I wouldn't want to change). I hope a house exactly like this is waiting for me in the afterlife!
Yeah, I'd say it's timeless. You could have told me it was built anytime after 1940 and I would have thought it plausible.
Normally I can’t listen to how architects talk, but this gentleman is a joy to listen to
Love how he kept in mind the acoustics of the lounge
Very unexpected design but as it unfolds becomes truly a work of art in it's originality and beauty.
One of the most amazing structures I have ever seen. Seems like he took what others dream about and made it real. The rectilinear angles and spherical forms harmonized so perfectly in the space space is euphoric. Amazing. Thank you for sharing what I would like to called a vision but it's a reality. It seems everything he wanted to communicate and express he did so with utter clarity and precise that you can only feel it.
I love that he walks to work every day!
What an absolutely incredible home, I have never seen such a more balanced home.
It has such a nice feel to it and loved hearing how it was built!
I love that he built himself his dream home but managed to expand and changes folks lives along the way. Kudos. Absolutely amazeballs.
Such a beautiful home! Love Robert's emphasize on the land and architecture all being at peace with one another
This is a home with an incredible amount of character! Almost looks like something out of the Jetsons. It’s an incredible look to see how an architect approaches a space. The angles and sharp corners both feel architectural while fitting into a rocky cliff side. Such an insight and an extremely unique and poetic home.
I think I love every single line, every single choice he made in designing this house, it is just beautiful!
love love LOVE how hes a 3 in 1. architect, builder, owner. shows his personal touch even in the furnishings and we know that he created with living in it in mind!
this is the most incredible and beautiful home i have ever seen, i have no words
Not sure why...but his vibe is beautiful.
This is so beautiful. I love it. What a wonderful designer. Wish I could live there for the rest of my life.
hes the real deal. i can literally feel the peace of this house.
Arhitect/ builder/ owner. The way he talks about his house, speechless... Whats most amazing, he designed the house in 1988. Still awesome house in 2022.
I love this so much!!! I noticed that a lot of architects tend to gravitate towards minimal mid century modern with a hint of industrial for their personal builds. Love how it’s sleek, tactile and warm at the same time.
WOW ‼️‼️
You should be extremely proud of yourself. That house is amazing 😍
It looks almost like a spaceship…..fascinating piece of architecture.
I'm born and raised in Oregon. I absolutely love the beauty of this state. This house is amazing. I'd love to see pictures of ho2 the house was when he first completed it. I'm sure it's had updates like the bathroom etc. But it's absolutely stunning.
Same!! It’s crazy to think that house is here in our state
Absolutely love this house!

And the minds behind it are darling.
I could stay here for a weekend vacation and unplug. Such relaxing vibe
"Solving the problems on the way a person wants to use a structure and not starting with a preconceived idea but solving the problems from the inside working your way out" That was great nice work !
I have had the biggest obsession with architecture and anything that is not hurting the environment around it, it's so beautiful and peaceful, this house is amazing, I'm in love.
*MUCH, MUCH better than all those cliché boxy mansions* made out of glass and concrete.
Although never mentioned as inspiration, I'm so surprised by how much Frank Lloyd Wright I saw (and felt) in this home.
He actually worked and studied under Frank Wright!
As did Paolo Soleri, whose Cosanti Foundation bells, made of cast bronze, are all over the exterior. There's like $3500 worth of bells out there.
@@ShireenAhmed1996close, but he studied under one of Wright’s sons.
This is absolutely beautiful, unique, and timeless. I would love, one day, to get to live in a space like this.
Make an offer on his website
This place is utterly gorgeous and I love Robert's detailed description of the thoughts and planning that went into it all. As a music lover myself I especially liked how he talked about avoiding parallel lines and reflecting sound off the walls. Everything is so well done. A pleasure to watch this.
I love the interiors, they compliment the exterior greenery so well. I love this!
Wow what an amazing vision and talent, absolutely stunning home. Being a builder who lives in the Pacific Northwest and have always wanted to live near the water as well I can really appreciate this man and his home. He strikes me as a very humble individual and that is so incredibly refreshing in today's day and age.
Thank you so much for sharing and may God bless you and yours always🙏
What an inspiration and peaceful retro-futuristic almost fallout asthenic before it came to be 1988. This man's mind as an architect should be celebrated!
This was a real breath of fresh air. Thank you for showcasing this great work AD!
I adore this home and style of home, especially this particular brand of modernism that came out of the late 80s and early 90s. It's my very favorite kind of design.
What a wonderful art masterpiece is that house! That funnel house looks like the best place to live in, in total synergy with the environment it's built on!
Even the sound system is built into the house so the sound travels in the most natural way it's really adorable.
What an inspirational home! And has aged so well! Doesn’t look dated
Wow. Thank you, Robert for sharing your incredible home and your genius. I can feel your zen-like beingness and it brings me a sense of calm and peace. I'm sending you loving thoughts and blessings, Ariana
This house and the architect are both amazing.
I’m in love with this house and i want a replica
What a wonderful design. I wish everyone had access to homes like this. if entire communities had similar innovative and well-thought structures there would be so much more beauty and creative inspiration in our cities.
this design and structure is so peaceful and soothing even just watching the video. It made me feel like I have been there before. absolutely love this house. The beauty is in the feeling and energy it gives. It is a place of healing. I got that feeling from just watching it. I would probably be over flowing with energy if I actually got to be there in person. This is the first time I have watched this channel or type of video. Thank you.
Wow! That house is incredible!
Can't believe I'm saying this, but I really like the house a lot!! It was especially interesting because the architect himself described everything, including the construction. I'd love to see more videos like this one. Thanks!!
seriously one of the most incredible and beautiful pieces of architecture i’ve ever seen
I love how open it is, and the natural light is amazing. It’s pretty in tune with its surroundings.
Looks like something straight out of Star Wars!! So incredible
The jet boats that go by below stop and call it the Jetson house
Love this house! So relaxing and peaceful. Fluid is another word that springs to mind. Thank you for sharing xx
I just want to sit on that deck, taking in the breathtaking view and watching the birds soar from above.
The sense of tranquility just watching this video is so intense, it must be the most relaxing space to live in.
A generous 'solution' to building 'there', for in its spritely leap, there is perfect harmony with its place achieved.💐
Beautiful! I feel there is a bit of frank loyd wright influence, maybe he wished to build a more falling water home, but this is maybe even more fantastical, it’s like a launch pad into the heavens, amazing and what a genuine person too.
This place is absolutely magical and the sites are breathtaking so much heart and soul
i love how much character it has. it looks 70's. like a house in a tv show i love and watched but never existed.
Incredibly beautiful. A true masterpiece. I would love a house like that. The views. The bathroom The balconies. All stunning
Wow! It is so inspiring to see someone who invests in the overlooked. From his approach to designing on “unbuildable” land to incorporating kids in drug rehab programs and empowering them to build, it is so refreshing to see someone with his mindset! Seeing this definitely brightened my day! Hope to see more of these architect tours!
I’d like to see this house in every season. I bet it would look even better in winter rising up out of the earth where you can see more of the “bones” of the structure.
Since it is in oregon, there’s more greenery in the winter usually.
Wow, what a house. Jaw dropping. Almost no words.
Amazing structure, also great there's a sitting room where you can "warch" TV.
Bravo! Such a beautifully designed and realized house & interior ✨ Hopefully more of these features AD.
The way he speaks and tells the story of the home made me emotional 🙏🏼. He said SO many things that I felt/made me fall in love with architecture, and he’s living my dream - designing and living in my own home. Got me over here thinking it’s not too late to pursue architecture 😅
Idk if it’s his age, but he has a very fulfilling tone to his voice. Someone who’s done so much and is content with his life.
So Beautiful. Thank you AD and Robert Oshatz
I would want to see a architects home before hiring them to design one for myself. I love the shape and color of his house. It seems so much bigger inside than it looks on the outside. It kind of reminds me of a blue bird on the trees
'emotionally I wanted a structure that felt it was soaring out into space almost defying gravity in a sense, but at the same time tied back to the land itself so that it feels that it's a part of the land and it belongs in this one particular site' - said Frank Lloyd Wright about 'Fallingwater' a half century earlier in 1935.
I cant find the source of FLW saying this. Can you post source?
@@marycalhoun2208 "...There in a beautiful forest was a solid, high rock-ledge rising beside a waterfall, and the natural thing seemed to be to cantilever the house from that rock-bank over the falling water...I think nothing yet ever equalled the coordination, sympathetic expression of the great principle of repose where forest and stream and rock and all the elements of structure are combined so quietly...I want you to live with the waterfall, not just to look at it, but for it to become an integral part of your lives..." - Frank Lloyd Wright
Beautiful. He has such peaceful humble energy
So unique style Treehouse in the world. Wow !!
Truly amazing
Real practical art
Wow. Amazing. I have so many questions to ask about the mechanical engineering calculations etc
Taking FLW to a new sophisticated direction. Wow, just wow!
I love it when architects have the opportunity to just go nuts.
This proves that modern buildings can be just as cool and unique as old ones without just badly copying traditional buildings.
When will AD start uploading in 1440p/4K? In 2022, 1080p isn't enough!
Color Science matters more than Resolution
@@BriscoMedia Clearly! On my big TV I can count every green pixel in the foliage.
4k 60hz HDR is the gold standard for video.
@@N0Xa880iUL I dont think so. As of March 2021, around 44 percent of U.S. television households have a 4K-capable TV
@@BriscoMedia Hi Brisco Media, I don't understand what *American* TVs have to do with UA-cam's bitrate. It's simple: you upload a video in 4K and everyone benefits from the improved bitrate, including users who don't have a 4K output.
