The biggest let down is the lack of safety gear. The biggest surprise to us while test driving all those utes is the GWM Cannon X. Really impressive package for the price.
I like all other aspects of Amarok except its lowest front suspension in class and what you said. I get that this type of IFS utes are generally not designed with extreme off-roading in mind, but Amarok seems to gave the least consideration for that in its class. a huge turn-off for me. if I have to worry about it after crossing half a meter deep water, it's just not right
I have an Amarok but only the entry level with sports bars and a few extras. It’s fantastic - love it but it is looking a tad dated compared with the brand new models. Only done 20,000. It drives so smoothly-more like a car. Towing with the tub and big trailer chockers with fire wood is such a breeze even up hill on wet grass with OFF ROAD MODE SELECTED. The new Hilux looks pretty good though and what about the Triton though not sure about the Tritons front. Front of the Mazda BT50 looks heaps better. Q. Which is the best Ute? A. The next one! Nothing like the V6 diesel power though. I hope that the new Ranger/Amarok partnership still has the V6. Could be the one to buy next. Spoilt for choice!

Interesting you can lock the rear but effectively have a LSD in the centre (torsen) that you can’t lock. The torque is really good, but without low range to multiply it, it’s less than the competition. There is a lot to like. But unless you’re happy to add a transfer case, there is no simple mod path to make this a true off-roader. Okay for the worksite, nice to drive, good at the lights. But overall, hard pass from me.

So, of the dualcab utes that are currently available in Australia, which one has the most knee, toe and head room (and preferably air-conditioning vents too) in the second row seats? And to save you some time, the Dodge Ram and the F250 are both well out of my price range and are far too big to fit in to my garage so don't bother recommending either of them. Personally, I think the Amarok is still a very smart looking and stylish ute particularly in silver or white; there are quite a few of them in this area and they always catch my eye when I see one on the road.
So nothing has changed since 2017 yet the price has gone up so much? They haven't even addressed the safety issues omg. But it does mean you can pickup a 2nd hand 2017 model & you wont be missing out on anything lol
I had owned various 4 and 6-cylinder cars over the years. Even though on paper the turbo 4 has more power you can't beat a 6 for low down torque. 1 power stroke every revolution just does not really do it for me. The overlap of a 6 makes a big difference.
@@shawsie5780 If lpg was still feasible for most people, the running cost will be comparable to diesel, while having majority of the performance of the petrol. Not to mention lpg is not as costly to repair. Plus don't get me started with the DPF crap they put in new Diesel vehicle.

@@unfrggnbelievble8320 What I meant is that the platform is old (platforms normally live on for about 8 years, this one is now 10 years old and isn't due to be replaced for another couple of years).
Navara and Ranger have pretty generous second row room.
So nothing has changed since 2017 yet the price has gone up so much?
They haven't even addressed the safety issues omg.
But it does mean you can pickup a 2nd hand 2017 model & you wont be missing out on anything lol
I am torn by the 2021 Amarok and the new Isuzu. What advice can I get as this would be my first pick up truck, thanks in advance.
My advise is sit in the Amarok and then you’ll know.
Isuzu
This engine should be in Ranger Raptor
Lol wow. You did the 0 to 100 the same as claimed and even the fuel economy was. Wow.
First to Comment for the first time ever😂
No 1 cares
@@arunvijay9151 that's a bit mean
I care
I had owned various 4 and 6-cylinder cars over the years. Even though on paper the turbo 4 has more power you can't beat a 6 for low down torque. 1 power stroke every revolution just does not really do it for me. The overlap of a 6 makes a big difference.
The v6 has way more power than the turbo 4 and is a far superior engine
Best Ute I’ve ever owned!, shame it’s turning into ford junk
I doubt the new Amarok will be as good as this one. They did the most with the vehicle and to try and top will no be easy
So isn't the dieselgate scandal haunting you.
Bolts for wheels are not a very good design.
Why doesn’t this car have conventional wheel studs.
that’s how the Germans do it. Must be better
Looking clean💯
We need more petrol powered dual cab utes!
Yeah like the V6 Hilux which they never sold because they drink a shit tonne of fuel ⛽️
@@shawsie5780 If lpg was still feasible for most people, the running cost will be comparable to diesel, while having majority of the performance of the petrol. Not to mention lpg is not as costly to repair. Plus don't get me started with the DPF crap they put in new Diesel vehicle.
How does it work Ford & VW who does what. The DX is better.
Ford gets the MEB platform and VW gets the Ranger and (I think) Transit platforms.
Correction 7.69l/100km
Review triton please....
Unfortunately VW Australia do not know what customer service is.
Great review. Prefer a ranger though
Why are they soo expensive?
I'm not into these, but didn't they have dodgy diffs some time ago?
V6 still the best engine of any of the basic utes. the Ford 2.0l is rubbish, the Toyota 2.8 is rubbish, all of the small 4 pot diesels are rubbish, except the 4JJ Isuzus.
Please may you also review the Legend 50 and Ranger
Front end looks like a Renault Duster
That's one of the worse vehicles to buy on the states onces they break down is hell trying to find a mechanic that fixes them
With all the hype around it, it looks boring and has boring features if at all. The only thing going for it is the engine power.
And if we could get a few people from car testing websites to start referring to the left hand indicator stalks as ‘stupid’ they might start putting them on the correct side of the steering column where they belong! (Time to get real VW).
How much water was in the back of the Ute? Must be planning a few more tests 😂😂😂
I think people buy this car only because of power, the V6..
Even me I'm checking this car only for V6.
The aging Uncle of utes.
Alot of this makes the model sound old saying its a 10yr old car...have you since an Amarok from 2010 vs the refresh in 2017? Completely different.
It is old. It's the oldest by a long stretch in this segment.
@@CarExpertAus what part of it is old tho? I mean the ranger looks the same since 2015? Inside and out
And the amarok changed with alot in 2017?
Interior engine etc
All decent questions I hope, I just don't get what you mean by "old"
@@unfrggnbelievble8320 What I meant is that the platform is old (platforms normally live on for about 8 years, this one is now 10 years old and isn't due to be replaced for another couple of years). It's very dated now in terms of safety technology - there are no rear airbags still, there's no AEB, no blind spot monitoring, no stop/start and no EPAS.
That's not being critical of the vehicle, it's still great to drive, it's more that Volkswagen hasn't invested in the platform. The next change to this car will come when it shares a platform with the Ranger in the next two years.
@@CarExpertAus ohhh okay nah I get yu now and that’s a very fair explanation I mean the airbag thing was the only thing that made me skeptical about buying my 2019 model amarok lol
Good video tho man👌
Looks outdated. Get with the times Volkswagen
I don't understand people's obsession with diesel engines. They're less reliable, pretty expensive to run and difficult to work on (depends on the engine and the vehicle), and (usually) very noisy. Apart from towing ability and fuel economy, I just don't see the benefit of diesel engines over petrol engines.
You mentioned the advantages and then pretend why people want diesels 😂
Do a review of Kia Sportage GT Line!!
Man I wish they just updated this model didn't need to partner with Ford!
Looking dated, looking tired😴...Not you Paul, the Amarok!!!🤣 Yeah computer says no! So, from what I thought looked great TEN YEARS ago, now is just an also ran. Very unlike VW!
Still the best to drive by an absolute mile.
These would sell in the US... I'm baffled.
America don't allow European utes to be sold in the US. Or they do but have put huge tarrifs so they make it unaffordable for people to buy
sean hershey Americans appear comfortable with sub standard domestic rubbish.
Kh2 ESP at least we're not dying like flys like your dopey mob.
We need more V6 turbos, but reliable and way better looking than this Amarok!!
Old!??? WTF! we are still waiting for it in Canada but noooo we can't import them because our neighbors to the south would pout.... for not buying there garbage pickups!
Still,behind ford raptor.
not nice interior look like 15 years old ute with 2021 tag . just engine worth thats it.
We have 2 Ford Rangers we love them in 💙 our in the family.
Na I think you love the Holden Colorado
Great analysis BUT what do you mean its missing a whole bu nch of safety kit ? are fgor Lane change assist and autonomous parking are for sleepy drongos surely. Dozing off and drifting into another lane or can't park your own car ? Sheeesh ! And no airbags in the rear ? Where you really don't need em anyway ! COME ON Paul ! What are you some kind of inner city weekend latte warrior or what ? Harden up man ! and apart from that - thank you for a good video !
Should be illegal with those hideous halogen headlights
Get a Highline then, bi xenon headlights with LED daytime running lights. Or if you want to save money then get a set of LED globes and swap them out
My mums Corolla would make it over that off-road track 😝
