I was almost crushed a few months ago. Cheap offshore crap. Folded the stands in half when the car landed. I jumped fast enough out.
Listen to Scotty.
Finally I can agree cheap jack stands will kill you just like your bad advice to not use them when you haven't taken the tires off
dont be committing suicide with jack stands god damnit lol
Can't never trust jack gotta put a tire or some type of support under your vehicle
@@MrTeatreeoil I double Jack stand and put a tire and still don't put all the weight on the stands, I spread it out with most on the jack.

There's a massive difference between a shop lift and a hydraulic floor jack. Good joke though.
@@zezaekrael Check out lift fail videos here on YT.
I use the jack stands my grandfather bought back in like the 50s. They're solid steel and weigh about as much as a car, but you can support a diesel truck in all four corners and climb in the bed and jump around and the things won't move at all.
Yep, they don't make them like they used to! Capitalism had ruined us in this instance... Back then most wanted to be known for reliability and dependability, now it's all 'bout opportunity cost and scarcity and 'greenness'
Similar boat. Gramps has a set that weigh about 30lbs each and at the lowest setting are like a 1 1/2 feet high lol. But I'd trust those things to hold up my house.
@@ev-ezaye3580 I’d say it’s more consumerism’s fault than capitalism.
Capitalism allowed the creation of these inventions, consumerism put pressure on companies to cut corners to meet demands, and get away with products failing as they know their consumers will purchase another.
@@ev-ezaye3580 Scarcity is the limited amount of resources on the planet. It is an indisputable and unavoidable phenomenon. Opportunity cost is the cost of being lazy instead of working, studying, or doing something else that's productive. Greenness is an invention of the marxist elites, propagated by the massive, government subsidised megacorps to kill all competition from small businesses, just like most any regulation. The one relevant thing you mentioned is indeed affecting it and it's a subversion of capitalism. The USA is less capitalist than it was in the 1950s by far. Don't believe me? Check out the quality of soviet goods and their reasoning for it!
@@TheBcoolGuy I find your analysis simple, well put together, and bullet proof. That EXACTLY what's going on.
"These jack stands will kill you" only shows jack stands that won't kill you.
Lol I was thinking the same thing. Pointless video.
pretty sure I heard him mention that the aluminum jack stands, or jack stands made in china w/ weak weilds will kill you but I could be hallucinating, I am not that woke with the times when it comes to slandering people for any reason at all
And that’s how it should be done.
He doesn't have any crap jack stands to show 😆 you have to watch the video, not just look at the thumbnail.
Why would he have crap stands to show? He is smart enough to avoid them.
One thing I was taught by a cousin of mine that I still do till this day (only if I'm working on something that requires the tires to come off), is I also lay the tires underneath the car. In the event that either of the jack stands fail, you have the tire(s) as a fail safe.
provided the tire is wide enough and you've placed it correctly.
I called a young man from Craigslist to do brakes lines. He arrives, jacks up the back end of the car with a hydraulic jack and proceeds to lay under the car. I scolded him. I ran to my back yard and got him jack stands as back up along with the hydraulic jack for safety. I told him to never lay under a car that is held up only by a hydraulic jack. I said, "Don't do that to your parents and your young wife". I really yelled at him. I hope he got the message. I've seen jacks fail. I know one man who was found lifeless by his family crushed under a car. You guys out there, if you work on a car, use two or even three support systems. One main one, and one or even two extra back up support devices. You have a death wish if you lay under a car with only the hydraulic jack holding it.
Agreed! I personally had 3 hydraulic jacks fail so I know what you're talking about. My grandpa was once working on his car and the jack suddenly went down and it was for the jack stands that the car didn't crush him. I always use jack stands and also put a tree stump with flat bottom as well as the spare tire every time I jack up the car. As CrazyRussianHacker says "Safety is number one priority".
I just changed the oil on my car today. With only one jack stand. This video came up randomly and now will go out and buy two solid jack stands.
Damn that was an accident waiting to happen. Hope you taught him a lesson. Jacks can fail easily, I got these really good car ramps I have been using. They are super solid and easy to use.
@@FitnessGuru91 I always use a jack as a backup on the jackstands. The probability of both failing, that is final destination territory. Driving is risky too. But NEVER ever get under a jack. I've taken jacks apart, you are at the mercy of a rubber seal/oring.
Scotty had a video showing us that it was okay to work under a car whilst only using a hydraulic jack.. . . Providing the wheels were still on. 🤔 which is it ??
For added safety, I always put my mother in law under the car when I’m working.
💀
Genius
Always use 2 stands !!!
A wise man gets a divorce and remarries so he can use the mother in law and ex mother in law.
Safety first
How do you get her to fit tho?
Lmaoo 😂
When you realize how flimsy many cheap hydraulic jacks are, it is doubly essential to use good jack stands.
This guy is right. Please never use a harbor freight jackstand or any cheaply made one. January of this year I lost my uncle due to a faulty jackstand from there. Spending the extra money is better than loosing your life. Stay safe everyone.
Getting jack stand of excessive capacity is one thing I would do if I can do it again. Instead of getting 3T jack stand that is enough for my cars, I would simply get 6T for the extra height and safety.
@stangmaster 2 thats annoying.
Certainly wont hurt to have overbuilt equipment
That's good if your jack has the lifting range to fit the taller jackstands under your lower car.
That sounds logical, but often the larger stands are just too big to use on smaller cars.
My big 6 ton ones for my truck won't slide under my buddy's Honda even with the jack all the way up.
Except for this:
If the welds are going to fail, they may fail at less than the rated load. I was using Harbor Freight “6-ton” jack stands on a 2 ton car when they were recalled for bad construction. I was pissed off that they had put my life in danger.
I jack it up and then put wood beams(I have a big fear of ending up stuck or flattened)
i put a spare wheel under it, same effect
ME Too !!!
And if you set them at a 45° angle opposite both sides it’s even more stable .. / \ .. Seriously
Not me. I pop a Viagra before I go under a car. :)

I used to always work on my car in the backyard when I was younger and would put a huge cut tree stump under the car along with jack stands just for an added sense of security. I used to feel so comfortable I would sometimes fall asleep laying under the car.
Some types of wood (especially dry) would just break into quarters if the weight of the car came down on it

I don't know if you have a menards store near you but they carry a brand called masterforce and they are very well made. I have a 3 ton set and a 6 ton set. They have a pin that slides in and doesn't allow the jack stand to be lowered so they are really safe.
I’ve had jack stands and a jack from HF for almost 10 years and the only time the jack failed was my fault - I didn’t have it under the frame and my car fell - but the jack is still good. Old, beat up, and a little rusty now, but still good. 😊
I have some 6 ton jack stands from harbor freight and a 4 ton jack for my half ton truck lol. I basically never take the tires off and get under the vehicle. I see no reason why anyone would. I use both jack stands and the jack I have zero issue doing this in my concrete slab garage lol.

I redid the whole underbody of my Durango, fixed rust, rust proofed the frame, panted it, with their crap jack stands before the original recall. I was under there for two weeks. Now I think I’m lucky to be alive.
I was a military EMT and saw a jack stand give out while a 350 lbs man was under it. His Ford F-150 obliterated his legs.
I think the recall was do to the handle that also served as the locking device of the stand. While in use if the handle was knocked or touched just a little, it would slip out of the notch because the notches weren't wide enough or deep enough. Maybe recalled on both accounts....
The first ones were recalled due to the locking teeth not engaging properly, the replacements had welds that could fail.
Makes sense. Normally those levers won't budge for anything with the cars weight on them. Try it sometime. You can kick and bash the living hell out of it and it won't release with half a ton of weight on top of it.

Interesting that Harbor Freight did a voluntary recall on their stands while every other vendor of Chinese or even cheaply built American stands has not. A boatload of similarities in construction. So what happened to O'reilly's, Autozone, the big box stores? Check them out, you'll find that the much denigrated HF stepped up, the others, nah, they'll take their chances.......with your life.
Yep, those same jack stands were sold under different names at a handful of other stores but only Harbor Freight had a recall. Looks like those jack stands Scotty is using are single locking, maybe he should go to Harbor Freight and check out the new Daytons.
You're correct, HF did the right thing and got denigrated for it. While other places with the similar or same stands did nothing. The new HF Daytona stands are superior to the old ones.
I always use redundant jacks if I am going under a car. Once while I was working on brakes from beside a car, it rolled off UPHILL. I watched in amazement. Smashed my small tool box, but not me.
Happens in a hurry, doesn't it?
Personally, I prefer ramps when I'm under a car.
There's also the sarcastic option: Put a big enough lift kit on the vehicle that you can fit under it normally.

The HF ones are fine now.. I got replacement 6T stands, believe me they ain't going anywhere.
Scotty Does not work at the House of Pancakes.
Harbor freight didnt recall their Jack stands because of weld failure concerns, the tooling they were using was so worn out that the teeth on the saddle were no longer formed correctly, same for the paw that ratcheted the saddle teeth, resulting in a safety hazard.
Surprisingly the ones they replaced them with were recalled as the welds could brake. Cheap Chinese junk.😊

But he's not under the jack, is he?
My dad would use bumper jacks when I was a kid. I used to worry and think that it was so unsafe. One day someone from our church whom was a mechanic, died from using the same type of jack. Car crushed him. He was very young and had several kids. They were so poor that they held the funeral in their own home. I was like 8 years old. I remember going up to see the body because all the kids were there poking at him. One kid tells me, "Touch him he's cold!" So I did, and he really was cold. I guess the adults understood that we were just innocent kids being curious because they didn't scold us. I'm 38 years old now and till this day I can still remember seeing tears streaming down his wife's face. At that time I didn't understand her pain but now I can only imagine. I never really lost anyone close to me. I fret for the future...
I Like Harbor Freight Jack Stands, they are solid aluminum and welds are tight, I am also a welder, so i know a thing or two, Snap-on cannot rip folks off anymore because of competition, with snap-on good luck finding a truck that is willing to exchange defective tools, unless you bought from the guy who sold you the tool. Harbor Freight tools are great for do it at home.
If i remember the ones that were recalled had an issue with the teeth not being deep enough due to manufacturing error allowing you to push the release lever with a much lower force than intended when under load
This is true, but the replacements had welds that could fail. So they were also recalled.

Slight correction on the recall of the HF jack stands. They were recalled not because the welds were breaking but because the teeth in the anvil section were not machined deep enough to adequately contact the latching portion. They now have new ones which are much better made with more safety protocols built in.
The best part of that Jack stand recall is the ones they replaced them with where just as crap lol
Almost all modern jack stands are made by the same 2-3 companies. Including harbor freight. HF recalled only a specific serial number/batch. Pretty much every modern Jack stand is one of only a couple different stamping patterns. Basically fucked no matter what ya do 😂

I like the ones Scotty has in this video. I have ones with legs and I'm constantly snagging onto the legs sliding things in and out from where I'm working. You wouldn't think it'd be a problem, but I always manage to do it.
I dislike how most jackstands you buy today have the "toothed" design. I like the ones my dad gave me from the 70's which were basically a heavy duty stand with a triangular base but it had a thick steel tube (probably 1/4" thick) that would move up and down and you would put a pin in place (much like you do with a trailer hitch) to lock it in place. That thin was not going anywhere. the ones like today, with the "toothed"/notched design I don't like and feel they are less safe than the old style pin-style ones like I have. Of course the ones that were given to me that I mentioned aren't light by any means, but they are sturdy. I believe each one is rated for 4,000 lbs so more than plenty for any job I've done. As with most things, they don't make them like they used to.
Uncle Scotty is always right !
I see those Airborne wings on that front plate 😉
The harbor freight recall on the last one was about the teeth on the stand being rounded off and not engaging... had nothing to do with the welds.

I just use the ramps, and use Jack stands for extra safety and leave the Jack somewhere where it’s not in the way while helping keeping the car up. Can’t go wrong with 3x safety. Can never have too much safety
He had me when scotty said "when im under a 2 ton car I love a nice safe jack stand" using a pitsburgh 2 ton though hahahahahahahahaha
I was using the Recalled Harbor Freight “6 ton” jack stands. I relied on them and never knew they were unsafe. To be fair, Horror Fright was really good when I returned them. Offered me a swap to new safe ones or a full refund to buy others from someone else.
I’m an EMT. Had someone’s jack stands fail the other day and his whole entire chest was crushed. Don’t go cheap.
I'm not even sure why people need to be told to not go cheap on the only thing saving you from gravity's wrath and smashing you. However heavy you think cars are, I promise they are heavier. Good story though, my uncle nearly lost a thumb to a brake rotor after a jack stand failure.

Wait, I've seen you in a video say there's no need for jack stands if the tires are still on the car. What's up with that?
I always double up my jack stands, I put two in every position - just in case. It's cheap insurance. Another thing you have to watch out for is ramps. I bought a pair of ramps and the first time I drove my car up on them, one just collapsed. I threw the other one away.
Yep! I warn people about those ramps as well.
When I heard about the Pittsburgh recall, I let a friend of mine that bought them know about it as well. His response, "two tons is plenty of weight for me."

Another thing Scotty, my old automotive instructor was telling a story about how he almost got crushed by a car. He had a car all up on 4 jack stands working on asphalt during the hot Summer. A stranger came over to him and they started talking, then all of a sudden a loud crashing sound came from behind them. Sure enough the jack stands started to shift on that asphalt, then the whole thing came down.
On a side note Scotty's are some of the nicest jack stands I have ever seen
And the man has a Pittsburgh jack!!! 😂 😂 😂
"...i like a nice safe Jack stands for not turning into a pancake" 😂😂😂
Scotty talks like a comedian but his opinions are well worth my time.
