I like that you managed to get your brown belt at 40 I’m 28 I’ve been to judo around 5 times now only just had my first session in a judogi yesterday but I have 3 years of freestyle wrestling experience so I’ve had a bit of an advantage so far. Hope to gain my brown in 3-4 years
In the UK we have a grading syllabus which includes terminology, throws and pins for each grade so a red belt will go through the same grading in any parts of the country this happens right up to brown belt. The dan grading sounds similar.
The hardesting for me was performing the NNK as Tori and Uke. Falling isn't not so cool when your 40 years old. Took several months off to prepare. Gokyo no big deal. Still took me a long time to reach Shodan was doing judo recreationally for 12 years. The thing is the time preparing for the Black Belt exam Work and personal life interfere especially after college.
Yes possible if you train matwork and off mat strength and cardio daily. One tests themselves against others in local, regional, national, .... tournaments Gaining friendships ,andpersonal values which last a lifetime
From my experience, 20 years ago when I got my black belt , the sequence in Brazil was, with one or another diference depending on the state, white, blue, yellow, orange, green, purple and brown. Usually, 1 year on each belt, except for the brown bc my state federation demanded 2 years before the bb exam. I remember the exam was expensive and we, conurtyside boys, had to travel to the state capital to take the exam. We had a very basic true or false exam about the rules and judo history and we needed competition points as well (don´t remember exactly how many). Good times.
Not at all impossible I know a guy that reached brown belt in both karate (kyokushin) and judo (kosen) and purple belt in bjj in 4 years starting from white in all of them...
I did it by age 16 but i competed ALOT and had an uncle who was a sensi, I still remember the "oh s**t" reaction i got getting my belt out of my kit bag first day of college Judo practice, the beasted the crap out of me to see where I was, but I gave just as good back!
Hi Man ! I wanted to ask you what do you think of no-gi Judo for self defense/MMA ? I got one gym near where i live and i wanted to have your opinion on it , thanks in advance.
@@OGFITNESS I look at Judo as a great addition to BJJ. They are so closely related that to me it would be smart to have that tool when training. My question is more timing than anything since BJJ is complex as is. Would training both at the white belt level slow progress on both? Thank you for the response, awesome videos!
@@ej6109 depends, but as adult starting judo 2-3 is enough. So 1 class with emphasis on Tachi waza + randori, 1 on newaza + randori, 1 purely techincal. I did 2 class a week for years, now im at 3 but i manage my intensity and sit out of randori when needed. If managed correctly you can train 6 days a week, thats just my opinion though.
Come on!!!! Judo got nothing to do with getting a black belt . Leave it for the taekwondo people why give black belts to 10 year olds. No need to get graded high in judo. If you want that then you got to compete other wise no Black belt simple.
hehehe, old school mentality there, i like it. I think there needs to be a minimum fighting skill that your coach should determine then you can go for black belt exam, wheather you compete or not.
I’m 38 and I’m starting Judo next week. Wish me luck!
Have fun, and send me questions when you start having some, Osu!!
How’s it going bud?
@@JB-jt1qp Good! I've gotten hurt several times but apart from that it's been awesome LOL Learning a ton 🥋

This is really good info to know how the climb from brown to black works.
In my judo school u need 150 points before u can take the black belt exam u have to beat 6 brown belts to get ur black belt
You have a good pre education, you worked hard, good teachers let you go your way and got talent. That's it!
Thanks Oliver, appreciate that. Osu!

@@premo0 thank you man , i’m really hoping i can sign up after this covid thing finally ends!
no-gi judo, interesting, you mean there is as actual gym that does just no-gi judo? It would be great for mma, and self defense on the takedown front.
@@OGFITNESS can't remember the names from the top of my head but I've seen some vids from gyms that do this too. I believe Shintaro was one of them.
Here's a playlist of his:

All fighters are subject to this...there is no favorite in individual sports...great
Would you recommend getting your blue belt in bjj before starting judo? Already started bjj but interested in Judo towards the future.
There's no definitive answer to that. Its your call
Hong covers this in a separate video, some good things to consider. Start at 15 minutes in this link:

How often and how long did you train for Judo at your club?
Also did you do any other training in addition to doing Judo?
7 years total in judo, at my current club 2 yrs, prior to judo 6 yrs of bjj and prior to that some TMA, Kung fu and Tae kwon do

Is the 120 pts a USA Judo requirement? I'm not aware that's a requirement for USJF
Not sure either,
