- We travelled Costa Rica in the end of May 2017 for 2 weeks. This Video gives you insights about the way we travel, what we liked most about Costa Rica, and things you should take care of or avoid.
I am glad you enjoyed your stay in here! Amazing video! Don’t forget to come back!
There’s still much more to see and do.
great video!! thank you! I'm heading there for 2 weeks end of April, even more excited after watching your video!
Really good tips. Your footage is awesome and keeps me listing to what you have to say. Great job!
I went to the jaguar center too. Puerto Viejo is beautiful!
Thank you so much for your video. It was informative and most interesting.
Great video, the drone shots are spectacular
beautiful shoots!!! great information. we loved cr! pura vida
Hello sir...thankz a lot for sharing your travel adventure in Costa Rica, beautiful-fantastic & so exciting : )
I love Costa Rica!!
Nice video. Thanks for sharing.
Thanks for sharing your trip that we Las a very calming video. :)
Safe travels
As a Costa Rican let me tell you, you've missed the best place here which is Manuel Antonio!! If you ever comeback don't forget to visit that beautiful park, it's the best of them all
Good to know, Thank you! We will definitely come back sooner or later, the bucket-list for Costa Rica is getting longer 😜
@@TheMegaMatt I agree, Manuel Antonio is my favorite place in Costa Rica! And public transport in Costa Rica is ok, in the sense that you can travel safely, cheaply and more or less comfortably almost everywhere, especially if you take the bus from a bus station, but if you want to wait for a bus at a bus stop somewhere, then you can still do it, the problem is that normally there's no reliable way to know when the buses are coming, so you just have to wait, and this can of course be frustrating. I live in Germany now and I know how nice it is to be able to rely on public transport (and in Switzerland it's even better).
Mauricio Gago okay, I see there is no way around Manuel Antonio 😃 thanks for the additional info on public transport.
Beautiful but very touristy. Much better places in C.R. than Manuel Antonio.
Hello, is that close to Perez?
great tips guys! We loved Costa Rica
pura vida!!! thanks for sharing these highlights of our beautiful Costa Rica!!
Pleasure! Happy you like it 😃
I’m planning a trip to Costa Rica in March this looks like the exact trip I would take !
Look for options to arrive to Daniel Oduber airport in Liberia, Guanacaste.. and explore the north Pacific side...
Nice video! Been to Costa Rica 5 times, the last was the Caribbean side. Both sides have their good and not so good issues, mostly good. Still lots more for me to see and do, can't wait til it's time to do more exploring.
Lovely country and no less lovely narration.
Great video! I’m traveling Nicaragua, Costa Rica and Panama in April.
Ive spent 2 years traveling through central America. If you dont like touristy areas filled with middle aged retirees like i dont, visit Ometepe, San Juan Del Sur, Cahuita, Puerto Viejo, Santa Theresa, Montezuma, Manzanillo, Dominical, Corcovado.
What a bunch of wildlife you spotted buddy.! You both look like a very down to earth and good nature mates. I'm glad you've enjoyed our Caribbean Coast. You made amazing shots, great quality video and very entertained. Rain during rainy season is indeed special, refreshing, pouring sometimes but that is why the country is so green. Traffic sucks yes in most of the areas but you seemed to have had a great time. Be back anytime there are tons of things to spot yet. Cheers
Thank you very much for your feedback! Yes we will definitely be back. Such an amazing place! Cheers
thanks for the tips... hoping to go to CR soon...
Love seeing all the wildlife there. We're next door in Nicaragua at the moment, but are looking forward to exploring Costa Rica 😃
Enjoy Costa Rica, Nicaragua is still missing for me! hopefully someday 😃
I will be enjoying this beautiful place very soon✨ 🇨🇷
Increíble que selva, playas unica y diferente a centroamerica de ahi su nombre Costa Rica 😲👍✌
Thanks for video. It very useful.
Great video guys ,I'm heading from the UK in March 2022, 2 nights in Miami then flying down to San Jose for 4 nights ,then up to Tamarindo for 10 nights ,hope the waves will be good there 🤙seriously can't wait to see the national parks with all the wildlife 😁
Sooo cool, wish you all the best for your trip. You will love it!
thanks for the review
Wow so well done! Bravo best video on Costa Rica 👆😎

Thank you for the video
Great video. I've spent my time in Puntarenas on the Pacific side but want to venture to the Caribbean side too.
Nice! have fun!
Thanks for a great video. We are planning a week long trip in December. What are the parts we should/can do with our 2 old baby?
lovely work.
tomorrow is our last day of our two week trip. We are going on a canopy/zipline tour. I was actually born here but have lived my whole life in America.
America is a Continent....
What was the name or where was the airbnb?
Awesome video! Helped me a lot with deciding where i want to go next! What videocamera are you using next to the dji mavic?
Really nice video man!!!
Thank you very much! 😃
thanks for video
You need more time then a 2 weeks....is the paradise on earth...
How did you travel down there? And approximately how much was you trip?
Visit Barra de parismina from March to June for leatherback turtle nesting and from June to October for Green turtle nesting...+more
Pura vida hermanos y saludos
Super video! Alles on point. Bin halbe costaricanerin (vo cahuita) freut mi häts eu gfalle. Pura vida!
Merci viel mal! Ja isch definitiv nöd s Lescht mal gsi in Costa Rica 😜
That was a great recommendation.. try to stay some days in fewer places.. commuting could be difficult..
Yes, the decision process is always tough! But if you try to do it all, you end up not being able to enjoy anything at all.
great video! do you recommend exchanging $$ ahead of time or right there? also would you recommend buying tour packages ahead of time or wait till i get there? if so where? thanks so much
Usually you get the best rate when you withdraw money from a local ATM with a Debit Card and if not possible with a Credit Card. Depending where you come from the exchange rate for Colones of your bank at home might be very bad. But you will get a good exchange rate for USD. So I would advice you to take some USD with you as a backup and then withdraw money locally. The exchange rates of money changers are always bad. We arranged the package with the first Hotel we stayed at. We sent them a message ahead, just to be sure, since we didn't have a lot of time. But I think most of the hotels would arrange these trips for you on the spot. Not sure though... maybe there are some answers on tripadvisor.
Nice wave shots! Let me know when you come back so we can do some surfing together.
Cool, thank you!
On your next trip to Costa Rica don´t miss visiting Turrialba and its nearby tourist sites.
Rafa.
Cool, thanks for the tipp!
Really nice and informative video. Thank you very much for posting. What video camera do you use?
Thank you! I use the Sony a6300, Sony FDR-AX53 (only for animals when I need to to be quick and need a good zoom), GoPro and the DJI Mavic, sometimes I even record with my IPhone, if there is an unexpected sighting.
Hi, what kind of outfit do you recommend in the jungle? Should we wear boots, or is it ok in sneakers as well? Cheers!
Hi, we didn't take any boots with us, we were fine with sneakers (or even flipflops). But we also didn't go too deep in the jungle. All the places we visited had well maintained pathways. Hope that helps, cheers!
Thank you for the tips. How do you find a guide there? Do you have any references?
Don’t need one just go to Manuel Antonio pay to enter park in and everything is there for u
I am volunteering at the Costa Rica animal rescue centre, I was planning on taking a week to travel around the country. The green water tour looks amazing and so do the national parks. I was wondering if you could tell me where I should go and how to get there (I don’t have a car). Thank you!
Hi Lilli, the animal rescue center is not too far from San José. There are several Tour Operators organizing 2 or 3 day trips to Tortuguero National Park from San José, they will pick you up at a location in San José. Tell them in advance to drop you of at a public bus stop going to Puerto Viejo on the way back, instead of taking you back to San José. Just google “Tortuguero National Park Tours San Jose” and pick the Tour Operator according to your preferences. You can easily find accommodation around Puerto Viejo on AirBnB.com or Booking.com. If you prefer a quite retreat over vibrant nightlife, than Punta Uva is a good choice. Otherwise Puerto Viejo offers anything you need. The Green Water SUP Tours as well as the Jaguar Rescue Center are both in cycling distance and bikes can be rented at multiple locations. The Cahuita National Park can be reached with the public bus, it might be, that tours are also being organized from Puerto Viejo, not sure though. Getting back to San José is also possible by Public Transport, I’m sure your host or Hotel will help you with the organization. Hope this helps, enjoy your trip!
This is so helpful thank you very much!!!
TheMegaMatt how much was the 2-3 day trip/tour?
Good video and images. Just one small correction. I believe you mentioned the "Atlantic side" in the same sentence as Pavones and Corcovado Park. They are both on the South Pacific side. Yes, they and that area is far from San Jose but well worth the trip. My personal favorite part of CR!
Yes, you are right, it has been pointed out to me already. Not sure how I can correct that now after the video has been posted 😬
Thanks for your opinion on the South Pacific side, I'll definitely go there next time 😃
@@TheMegaMatt I do not think you can edit after posted? You made a very nice video! I have not been to the Carib side, yet. In less than a month I return for 4 months. I stay mostly in the Dominical area. Love the vibe there. Especially in the dry season. Up north it is too hot and dry for me. I prefer the green jungles of the south and rivers flowing with water for mid day soaking. Lots of waterfalls to play in too. Pura Vida Amigo!
Thanks for the video. I’m heading to Costa Rica next month and think I might be trying to do too much in my 12 day stay after watching this. What do you suggest are must do’s?
Hi there! have a look at this place at La Fortuna, the best Hotsprings in the country ua-cam.com/video/ZvXNWz6qhfM/v-deo.html
Hello, what kind of camera do you use, those are amazing closeups you got.
Thank you! The Close-Ups with a nice bokeh were made with the Sony a6300 and the Sony E 50mm f/1.8 lense. It is my favourite travel camera, small and powerful. But you have to be close to the object. The Humming-Birds for example actually landed on our fingers!
The zoomed-in Close-Ups from most animals are made with the Sony FDR-AX53. It's a handycam, which most filmmakers would put of as unprofessional. But it has a powerful zoom (20x) without the need of changing the lense. It's my favourite Safari-Cam, because I'm ready for the shot in just a few seconds and it enabled me to get shots, which I otherwise would have missed. In lowlight conditions this camera performs very poor. The rest of the shots are made with the GoPro, sometimes IPhone, and the Drone was a Mavic Pro.
Thank you great advice and incredible places , do you have a travel list to offer on the recommended places you have been to in Costa Rica.
Hi, glad you like it. Unfortunately I have no travel list. But the places are all displayed in the video.
Manuel Antonio, Cahuita and Puerto Viejo, La fortuna, you can do a travel only to the pacific. Jaco, dominical, manuel antonio, bahia drake, and if you want to go to the wild down in corcobado, or going to the north and visit Guanacaste
Hi did you book the boat from monteverde to Tortuguero national park in monteverde? What did you do with your rental car? Many Thanks
After Monteverde we returned our rental car in San José. Our trip to Tortuguero was with Jungle Tom Safaris and included the pickup from San José. They offer 2- or 3-day packages. Here is their website: www.jungletomsafaris.com/packages/
We were absolutely happy with our tour and our guide Kevin was awesome. There are many different providers organizing trips directly from San José. If you want to be sure to get the right one for you, check the reviews on Tripadvisor: www.tripadvisor.ch/Attraction_Review-g309268-d302451-Reviews-Tortuguero_National_Park-Tortuguero_Province_of_Limon.html
After our trip to Tortuguero we requested to get dropped off at the bus station in direction Puerto Viejo, where we got another rental car for the remaining days of our stay. Maybe not the easiest way, but it worked fine for us. I hope this helps 😃
Great Video!!! We are planning a trip from Zurich this late summer...Any problems getting drone permits or whatever in order to fly? I've got a MAV2Z...Thanks for any help!
No not at all. Costa Rica is very drone friendly: uavcoach.com/drone-laws-in-costa-rica/
Whenever I was on a tour or similar, I asked the Touroperator and visitors, if it was okay for them if I flew ma drone. They always happily agreed! Wünsch eu viel Spass in Costa Rica 😉
They are forbidden in National Parks.. bc if they get lost, battery is polluting. But else where you can use them
Bro nice video, are you planning to visit central valley? There are a lot of stuff to do there as well
Just checked it on Google, it looks beautiful. Thanks for the tip, I need to remember this when we plan our next trip!
My wife and I rented a car, when we went to Costa Rica for our honeymoon, a few years ago. We drove all over the country. Cahuita/Playa Negra was my favorite! Out of curiosity, what'd you do with your rental car while you were in Tortuguero? We're planning on going back next year and are going to rent a car again, but we'd love to make Tortuguero work also.
That actually was a bit of a hassle. We returned our car in San José before we left to Tortuguero with a tour operator (organized transport, accommodation and safari). After our trip to Tortuguero we rented another car in Puerto Viejo. Maybe it would have been cheaper to rent a car over the entire period and leave it somewhere close to Tortuguero. But anyway, the car renting was both times very simple and not expensive at all.
Depending on how long you will stay in Tortuguero, there is a parking lot just exactly where you take the boat. There is also a restaurant beside the river and the parking lot.
So I’m planning my trip to CR, but I don’t know exactly where to go.. don’t know where In Costa Rica should I book my hotel, any recommendations?
Case de sunset - cloud 9
Was that your dog on the paddleboard??? We are traveling with ours to costa rica for the first time and wondering if you have any tips.
No that wasn't ours. I'm sorry, we don't have any experience traveling with dogs.
That sound of falling iguanas is so typical for the Caribbean 😂
Is it? I wish i had filmed it right from the beginning 😂maybe next time!
Your video was amazing! Could you tell me which places did you visit? And the times to get from one place to the other ? Im planning to visit Costa Rica for 10 days too and I'm not sure about if it's better to rent a car o take the buses. Please help me. Thanks
Hi Christian, the names of the places we visited are displayed in the video. Just type them into google maps and you will know the driving distance and time needed. Trips to Tortuguero are organized from San José including transport. So I would start or end the trip with this activity. There is no need for a car during that time. For the rest we enjoyed the flexibility of having a rental car, especially if your time is limited. Navigation worked perfectly with the offline maps from google. It works without roaming, so you don't have any extra costs. Hope, that helps, enjoy your trip!
TheMegaMatt is much was your car rental? I’ve heard it’s nearly $60 a day!
Such a wonderfull video.
How much did you spent during your stay (no flights included)? Greetings
I'm sorry I don't remember exactly.
Tortuguero was around $ 250.-
www.jungletomsafaris.com/3-days-2-nights-tour/
The rental car was around $ 200.- / 7 days
AirBnB: +/- 50.- / Night for 2 people
Food (we often cooked ourselves): $ 30 / day per person
Different Activities like SUP- and Surfrental, entrance fees, guides, petrol, etc. on top
All in all it was around $ 1'800.- for 2 people in 2 weeks (flights not included)
My dream
Put a date on that dream.. and make it a plan ;)
Lovely video. Do you have any tips for renting a car? We are travelling from Us and booked a 4x4 rental on priceline but the price seems too good to be true... Also, could you share the link to your air bnb? Thanks you.
We had a car from easycar. It was the following type: "SUV 4WD, Suzuki Grand Vitara or similar" and it cost us around USD 200.- for 7 days. Rental Car prices can have extrem variations depending on the season. We also once had a car for around USD 5.-/day in other countries. It can happen during low season. However we were very happy with our rental car provider. Super easy, no stupid discussions and not trying to talk us in an upgrade. We always book over www.economycarrentals.com/ which usually gives you the best rates possible. On the other hand you don't know which provider you will get in advance. Anyway, never had a bad experience with this onlineplatform. Maybe you can doublecheck the prices with it. I would recommend getting a 4WD. We used the offlinemaps of google for navigation and had no problems at all finding our places. Thhis was our AirBnB: www.airbnb.de/rooms/16038284?eal_exp=1497554917&eal_sig=6874baba9d49013eeff2daa4fa53f6657acd50baaa87e51d54bd00f5311a27ce&eal_uid=14233459&eluid=0&euid=4b5788d4-101c-a266-e71f-4b065753abb6
Hope this helps.
TheMegaMatt thank you so much for the detailed reply!!! That helps a lot
Thank you! I wanted to go to the Caribbean side but all the infos are based on pacific side(typical US holiday/restaurant touristy spots arent for me i much rather enjoy low key nature chilled places). Special birthday coming up, and I've heard October is great on Caribbean side to see turtles and sloths...I'm an animal/nature lover...i thought you had to fly return to go Tortuguero/SJ...how did you travel from there to costal beach? And were did you rent car from? We will be there 10days flying from London. Your help would be much appreciated! Thank you Merci Danke
Hi Sabrina, Trips to Tortuguero are organized from San José including transport (in our case minibus). So I would start or end the trip with this activity. We started our trip with Tortuguero. But instead of driving back to San José we asked the Tour Operator to drop us off at a bus station, where the next bus took us to Puerto Viejo. Then we rented a car directly in Puerto Viejo. I think we booked the car over www.economycarrentals.com/
It's one of the cheapest ways to book a car, but you won't know your provider until you have made the booking. If you prefer a certain rental company i suggest you google them for the respective destination. We enjoyed the flexibility of having a rental car, especially if your time is limited. Navigation worked perfectly with the offline maps from google. It works without roaming, so you don't have any extra costs. Hope, that helps, enjoy your trip!
@@TheMegaMatt Thank you so much i will check it out. I wasnt sure where to rent a car apart from arrival airport. Im dying to see Tortuguero and see sloth...whales if weather permits! We will defo rent a car!
Nice video! Let me know if you plan on traveling to the Pacific side of Costa Rica. I can help show you some great spots, including whale watching!
Awesome, thank you!
Hey Matt, at 5:10 you mention the tree house. Would you mind to mention the name and location. Thanks!!!!!

Hey, I go to Switzerland every summer( Zurich, Klusplatz) and to Costa Rica for the Winters. Live in the US. My two favorite countries are Costa Rica and Switzerland, both are so beautiful, yet, I think Costa Rica is a better destination, because there is so much more to see and do, plus CH is pretty expensive! What says you??
Well I live in Switzerland and love it! It's a huge privilege to live here. But you are right, it's a very expensive country, it's landlocked (no ocean), very different climate and wildlife. I loved everything I saw in Costa Rica, but I just got a sneak peek as a tourist, only doing the cool stuff. Both beautiful countries, but very different! I wouldn't rate one above the other.
@@TheMegaMatt Well, I was not comparing each country. My point was just that as you said, in Switzerland , there are beautiful scenes, ancient towns, views to die for, but, other than perhaps skiing in the winter and hiking in the summers, what other free stuff is there to do? Whereas in Costa Rica you still have no clue as to what you can see and do. Where in Switzerland do you live? As I mentioned earlier, I go to Zurich, I have been to every town in Switzerland, just got a speeding ticket in St Gallen, last August!! hahaha
0:25 what was that in the water???
algae/seaweed

Were there mosquitos in the rainforest, or other biting flies?
I don‘t remember it as being an issue, but I‘m not sure. Maybe try google to confirm it.
This is a great video!...Very nice camera work!
Hi... nice video! I will visit Costa Rica in january. My question: Is a Drone allowed in Costa Rica? Greetings from Germany
Hi, Costa Rica is very drone friendly. I don't know if there have been any changes since our stay, but my first reference page is usually this one: uavcoach.com/drone-laws-in-costa-rica/
I usually check 2 or 3 different website via google to make sure about the regulations. Hope that helps 😉
Hallo! Drones are forbidden in National Parks.. but allowed elsewhere

Dollar or Economy rent a car are cheap as well.. the insurance is the expensive part.. it is not mandatory.. but you can acquire third party damages..
Awesome video! That was 2017 have you been back to CR since 2017?.
Thank you! No I haven't managed to go back until now, but it's still the plan! Hopefully time will permit it soon ;-)
@@TheMegaMatt explore the Pacific next time. Avellanas and Conchal beaches
vernyfernandez Thanks for the tip
1. You can also fly into Tortuguero.
2. That "lagoon" is the intercoastal waterway that runs all the way to Lemon.
3. You skipped the "Atlantic" coast? You meant Pacific.
Whooops!! Thanks for dropping your knowledge, will definitely have to fix Nr. 3!
Lod nombred propios no cambian....es Limón...
Fer CD of course you are correct. Pardon my gringo fingers.
How was rental car with mandatory insurance ?
We always only take the most basic insurance and nothing on top. But that's because we are covered with all the insurances we have in Switzerland. In my case it does not pay off to take any extras on top.
TheMegaMatt I thought the extra insurance was mandatory?
how was the rental car? we wanted to book but we see 5$ a day. is this true? can i have your feedback, thanks!

Thank you for your great video. We are arriving early July to San Jose, where do we begin?
Depends on what you want to do. If you want to see the sights of San José, you should only spend a day there. Afterward, go to one of the unique places, like Monteverde, Manuel Antonio, or La Fortuna (town close to the Volcán Arenal).
Where did you rent your car? Do you remember? How much was it?

KNC From Berlin Germany..
What about diving? 😲
We'll have to do that next time. My wife just did her Open Water last year. Another good reason to go back!!!
Which dorone are you useing?
Hi Jurij Cigale, in this Video I used the DJI Mavic Pro. I just got it befor the trip, hence was still experimenting with the settings. Some footage turned out well, other footage not so well. Meanwhile I have figured out my favourite settings and am super happy with this drone. I also use the Phantom 4 Pro at home, but for travelling, the Mavic is my first choice.
Two month ago i bought GoPro6 camera, but I doubted to buy Karma or just CameraGopro6, after this took it apart, because its a lot negative reviews about Karma. So i still dont know....:D
If thought you said what Not to do.
Do you have an Instagram?? I would love to see pictures 😍😍😍
Yes but not very active:

There is no Atlantic ocean in Costa Rica
Yes, you are right! But I'm glad people are clever enough to realize that mistake I made ;-)
When I get rich I'm moving to this fucking country.
Tortuguero was the worst part of our 10 days in Costa Rica. I got food poisoning and there's no hospital for three hours, by boat. I didn't drink the water, but did eat salad and I'm pretty sure that's where the mistake was made. My wife ate only cooked food and she had no problems. Where we stayed in Toruguero, there was no hot water, no air conditioning and the place smelled like sewage. I'll never go there again. Other parts of Costa Rica were very nice...
😭
Sounds like a logistical headache
Its a good video, but you missed a lot of places.
As a tourist you also do not want to see the dark side of the country, drugs addict, prostitution, and how poor people survive there.
When you say Rica, you have to make a double R sound.
Try to read RRica, like when you say ride in english, republic, rest.
Thank you
Thanks! I'm sure I missed a lot of places. 2 weeks is not enough to see an entire country! I will practice my pronounciation for next time 😜
No inviertan en este pais. Los politicos te canvian las reglas de los inpuestos cada año. Para robarte. Es increible
