The original Semi-Charmed Life was about drug addiction disguised through an upbeat melody. This mashup feels like a release from drug addiction with divine help. And it's a beautiful mashup.
I was talking with a guy at work about the third season of True Detective, and how the main character's life was a series of failures amounting to nothing, no good, and this guy was like, "Well, isn't that what life is like?" I said no, lots of people achieve worthwhile things, and he asked me whether there was any good I thought I had done in the world, and I said, oh, definitely, I support the music of DJ Cummerbund. He did not find that to be a satisfactory answer but let's be honest here, I nailed that shit, and my argument only gets stronger every time a new song drops.
We seriously need to talk about how brilliantly all these elements work together. Like, I'm about to Rick Beato this shit. 1. Every song used that had melodic components was already in the key of G major. 2. Cummerbund very carefully picked elements of the EJ solo that would fit well harmonically within the D-to-C change in the 3EB song. 3. DMX's verses were interweaved perfectly within the crescendos & decrescendos of the 3EB song. 4. THE DOTTED 8THS SYNCING AT 3:41!! I was already very familiar with both the 3EB and AoB songs, so I knew that dotted 8th rhythm appeared in both, so when I heard the final chorus starting up, I was like "wait a minute, he's gonna frickin line these up, isn't he??" And when it hit, I damn near stood up and applauded. This isn't just a mashup. This is a damn masterclass in mashups.
I've taken music classes, for whatever reason it just does not stick. The explanation you gave in text means so much more to me, like I can finally understand how I'm feeling this feeling of euphoria when *THIS* happens
Number 4 is even better. The dotted 8th rhythm (or triplet if that's your thing) is present in the start of both those lines, but the backing music in SCL and the "ay yay yay" lyric there is slightly rhythmically different than the rhythm in that Ace of Base chorus (the Ace of Base chorus starts with the dotted rhythm but then ends with a straight "+4+". So he actually SLIGHTLY altered the Ace of Base vocal to fit what the backing track is doing for SCL and matched it perfectly. I noticed it immediately and left a comment last year on this very thing. Brilliant work by DJC.
This is the best thing I've ever heard. My girlfriend is addicted to mash-ups, and plays them back to back on car trips; usually by browsing through them, picking them out to play almost at random. When I heard this, it took about twenty seconds to realize that something incredibly special was happening. Two-thirds of the way through, I found myself with my hand clamped over my mouth, tears rolling, trying to drive. It's a masterpiece, and the original artists should take a lesson. Thank you, DJC. Keep making it happen.
Only a genius can put Ace of Base, 3rd Eye Blind, DMX, Savage, and Eric Frickin' Johnson into a mashup masterpiece. DJ Cummerbund, you are THAT genius! Loved it!
What’s lovely here is four diffuse voices (counting Eric Johnson) sounding like a community of purpose - each lending their own perspective to The Sign.
Oh man, the storytelling of this always really moves me. It's like two people who were in a toxic destructive relationship and the woman has finally pulled herself out and is relieved while the man resolves to face his demons and change himself. And the lyrics and the music are so complementary, and it's just beautiful.
To be born in the 80s and to listen to this in 2020 is an emotionally intense experience. As long as we have faith in our Lord and Savior Randy Savage we're gonna get through this.
Born in '81, I was a teenager during the 90s, and now I find myself increasingly nostalgic about the music from that era. Maybe it's a... SIGN... that I'm getting old?
Im discovering this four years after the fact, im pretty sure this is the greatest DJ Cummerbund mashup. It somehow unites DMX with Eric Johnson's Cliffs of Dover yet manages to be... Subtle
This is top tier, and I'm mad that I missed this one somehow. This is so good that there is no reason to not believe that this is truly the original version of the Ace of Base song. I'm applying Weird Al philosophy here. I laughed as the "doo doo doo, doo du du doo, doo doo doo" was changed. Avoiding copyright infringement can be hilarious.
This song has been my main source of Dopamine as of late and for two reasons. 1. The imagery of DMX hiking through the desert preaching the Word of Randy Savage 2. That killer guitar solo.
My friend and I were admiring your mixing in this video, audio and visual. The editing of DMX’s lyrics was superb; they need to call the academy to give you an award for the sheer brilliance. You hit all the marks for nostalgia with the 90s alt rock from a millennial. Ace of base original probably wont be as fun anymore; look what youve done. I loved that you closed with semi-charmed lyrics. Bravo!
This is the epitome of the sum being greater than the parts. I know every one of these songs and I have to say they are each better combined here by DJ Cummerbund than any of them was by themselves. This is true studio wizardry. When the industry gets wind of this, he'll be too busy making legends to make mashups. But until then Cheers Mate!
My man. I recently lost my father and it was a very sad month, but every day on my way to the hospital I was listening to your hilarious, catchy and well done mashups, and they were the only thing keeping me smiling through that sad process. Thank you.
The Lord gave me a sign and it was this song. He knew I've been listening to Semi-Charmed Life for the last couple of days and sent me this to mix it up a little.
Can anyone else remember the original background music? I sure as hell can't anymore. Also, bravo for always finding surprising ways to make rap something I enjoy.
I've been on a binge of your channel the last few days I've encountered it. I can't get Gamblefalls out of me head. And now you have one of my favorite songs from the 90's mashes up with another great 90's hit. You sir is what makes mundane music magnificently magical.
I secretly want to be you. Ive been thinking about mashups in my head for years now but I don't have the evil genius like you to compile them into the gems you create. The other day I heard 3Teeth's version of Pumped Up Kicks for the first time and realized it almost perfectly mashes up with Offspring's Gone Away. If you can find it in your heart and in your freetime to make this I promise to erect several churches in your honor....had to make a Simpsons reference since you're a big fan too. 💞😘

An excellent comment.
He didn't see the sign.
Strange, MMMBop isn't anywhere in this song but I can still hear it
It's in there somewhere
that's because it's in your heart
I'm hearing Life is a Highway vibes here, too!

Came straight here to pay tribute to DMX. RIP, thanks for the sign.
The cliffs of dover part blew my mind

Not gonna lie, this definitely semi-charmed my sign.
Just wanted to drop that I recognize the incredible work that went thru 3:41-3:44 and that at least one person noticed it.
