  • For more than 850 years, the Sudo family has been making sake in Obara, Japan. Their sake distillery is the oldest in the country. After the 2011 earthquake and nuclear meltdown, they feared the water in their ancient wells had been poisoned and they would have to close. Luckily, the water was deemed safe and today they carry on their time-honored tradition.

      swapsplat Unfortunately, the majority of content on UA-cam is on the shorter side because generally people are turned off by longer videos. While you and I would enjoy an hour-plus-long documentary on this 700+ year old sake brewery, but I think that most wouldn't.

    To quote from the above: 'For more than 850 years, the Sudo family has been making sake in Obara, Japan. Their sake distillery is the oldest in the country'
    But sake is BREWED not DISTILLED so it should be a sake brewery not distillery!

      There's a really interesting documentary called the Birth of Sake. You can see some of the process, and it's pretty hardcore. Sake is not distilled, only brewed which I think is like beer, as you said. It's basically fermented rice. You could also chew rice and spit it into a sealed container where it'll ferment, but this is mostly done for Shinto ceremonies I think.

    • @boatoflol
      @boatoflol 7 років тому +1

      The biggest difference between Sake and Wine or Beer is the fermentation process which is done not only by yeast like wine etc. but also a fungus which converts the rice starch into Glucose for the Yeast to ferment.

    Just look up Sudo Family Sake, or other Sake brewers. I drink a sake that has had the same recipe for over 700 years. Plenty of documentaries cover this. Your just dumb if you think this is the one and only video about old-school sake brewing.

    00:22 - "Making sake for almost a millenia?" How about "almost a millennium." Millennia or millenniums would be plural (and grammatically incorrect), but "millenia" is not a thing at all.
    Spell check...grammar check...anyone?

      +da one flieng munkey NO it's NOT. It's plural. These people have been making sake for almost ONE period of 1000 years, and that's a MILLENNIUM. Look it up before you post. I did.

      +da one flieng munkey It is no longer surprising how many dumb fuck mooncalf morons peck away on their keyboards like random headless chickens, but when you make all those shit-for-brains idiots look like Einstein, well, now, that _is_ impressive. Go back to school or burn your computer, imbecile.

      +Wysteria InBloom I don't just _sound_ smart, idiot, and you calling someone a fool is like you calling someone a faggot; your assertion is obviously false unless you're simply talking about yourself. Again, I strongly recommend you destroy your computer and dispose of it in the nearest recycling receptacle. Since you won't ever do that, the next best thing for you to do is splurge on yourself with your favorite treat: bukkake. Go fuck yourself.

    i hate that this is called great big story when all it ever is is an intro to a great big story. you are like lazy highschool students writing an essay. you look at the rubric and get as many easy points as possible without actually doing any work.

    • @hakuOTR
      @hakuOTR 7 років тому +23

      I wanted to address this because there's such a wealth of information and insight I could share with you behind the explanation for what may seem like this channel being lazy and going for easy youtube points.
      A little bit of history and culture; The average youtube length is 7 minutes. This is because people (nowdays) really enjoy small bites of information in a fast paced, engaging format. UA-cam supports exactly that. You are given a title, length, creator, and thumbnail before selecting a link and you can choose among tens of dozens of these (based upon youtube's algorithms and your watch history) and creators must do their best in appealing to you.
      This is one of the leading causes of GBS choosing to have a 1-3 minute time goal. Their mission is to "create and distribute micro docs and short films" (found on their channel) in which to "...to discover the untold, the overlooked and the flat-out amazing" important word here is 'discover'. They're not here to tell you the entire great big story, they're here for people to discover these stories. And with their recent 1 million subs, by hell they've done a great job doing that.
      Apart from their goal being a very focused and completely different from what I'm presuming you think it is; Great Big Story puts shit tons of money, time, and effort into making these videos. Imagine how much money it takes into sending a reporter to a different country. Then how much money does it cost to hire a translator. How about transportation/lodging/other expenses for the people on that trip. Then how much does it cost to get a interview(you pay people to interview them btw). Then a video editor? How much does he get paid? I can assure you it's far far more than $10 an hour. Heck GBS probably has teams of editors, animators, translators, you name it. And how much does software cost for them? For example, the adobe suite costs $70 a month per license. With a team of 5, that's $350 a month just for one suite. Plus the building they work in, and computers, electricity, server space, camera gear. Heck the list goes on and on and on and on for what this company has to pay to get a short 1-3 minute story for people.
      The point for that is, people don't spend tens of thousands of dollars to be 'lazy highschool students writing an essay'. Every single part of the entire process of the creation of these videos, seems(I'm not an insider idk) very very professional. From the way the questions are asked to the framing of the interviewees to the editing and the video quality; I, and anyone with enough experience in this field, can tell that hours and hours and hours of work were poured into every single second of this video.
      The channel is called great big story, and they actually are showing a part of a great big story. Simply Orange can name themselves whatever they want, and add whatever they want to their orange juice and nobody(except for the FDA) can tell them no.
      I'm sorry if I seem belittling or pretentious , but I really do want to share that these people are doing amazing work that takes tons of time, energy, money, and the devotion of dozens of people all to create amazing things with a beautiful mission and end goal. They want to share the wonders of our world and that's totally respectable and quite amazing in my opinion. You're entitled to think whatever you want of it and feel however you'd like about it, but I implore you. Of all things you can say about them, please don't call them lazy. If anything these people are, that word is definitely not one of them. I understand that you probably didn't think about any of this, probably just had a feeling and wrote a comment because of it. But that's totally okay! I, as well as shit tons of other people just have small thoughts or feelings about something and need to get it off my chest as well. I totally understand where you're coming from. But it'd be really nice for the people in this industry, the people who do this work on a daily basis, and myself included, if more people could come to the understanding that this; as well as so many other professions, is a shit ton of hard work and devotion to one's own craft. And many things in life shouldn't be belittled because of what the cover of the book, or outside impression may seem like to some people.
      Thank you for taking your time to read this, I hope you take this not as a negative experience, but as a learning one. And please have a better day than you have had already. :D
