I've heard it said that "sometimes you get what you don't pay for." Translated sometimes cheap isn't better. I'm saving up for the 4300. Maybe Dremel will have a discount for a late wood carving bloomer like myself. Can't believe I'm almost 67 and I can't wait to start carving. My Dad had every tool in the world but I tended to hurt myself with hammers and such. He joked about having me sign a waiver each time I borrowed one. But I digress . . . thank you so much for your videos. They are entertaining, educational and inspiring.
You won’t be disappointed with the Dremel 4300. I’ve had mine for a year or so and it’s marvellous. I use mine with a flex drive and hang it on the Dremel workstation. Coupled with the Kutzall bits, it cuts through wood easily.
Well you're my first teacher to learn how to carve with a dremel and I'm really grateful because the bits are very intimidating to me, always unsure I'm using the right bit for the right thing so thank you for taking the time to teach beginners like me.
i have really bad anxiety and I went out and got this rotary tool bc the vibration helped calm my nerves. so I went thru looking for a how-to, and nothing good until you kept popping up, so here I am. Thank you for having such a monotone even-tempered voice and awesome demeanor.

I totally relate to you, same anxiety issues. I just started 3 days ago, I didn't carved wood yet, just pvc pipes, but I'm in love with my rotary tool

I needed to learn the basics and how to get words to not turn out so squiggly. Really struggling to find many other videos that apply to simply engraving names onto cheese/cutting boards.

Just got my Dremel 4000 with the flex shaft today. Ready to jump into Dremel Wood Carving. So glad your video was one of the first I viewed. Your emphasis on basic concepts impressed me as the smartest way to proceed. Although appearing simple, boring, and repetitious, it reminded me of the Karate Kid, "Wax on, wax off". Boy, if I took a shot every time you say "right here" I would be dead in under a minute, lol. No, seriously, thank you for a great learning video. I just started myself and it's kinda hard to hold the bigger Dremel tool for any length of time without my hand cramping up, So I bought the ones that you have in your box there. Much easier on the hands.

Beginner here! The flex shaft is great, I just got a Dremel 4000 and I went ahead and got the flex shaft along with it. Looking forward to making some wood spirit carvings and stuff to practice my way to success! I’d love to be able to make lots of neat little trinkets and stuff and get them homes out there in the world. It’s so exciting that maybe my little pieces of art will be displayed in someone’s home and stuff like that! Hehehe

Good tutorial. I've carved with a Dremel since the mid 90's. The only thing I would like to add is the harder the wood the quickly your bits will dull. It's easy to carve with sharp bits. I have always wanted to try a Fordham but yet to try it.

There's both flat pieces good for starting out & other ready to be decorated pieces.
I definitely want that stronger drimmel!!!!
But I probably can't justify spending that much yet. But if I really get into it & I'm consistently doing things I'll try to get it.

New subscriber. Just got my Dremel 3000 with flex shaft for polishing/shaping resin, but I also do a lot of gilding and having seen this awesome workshop I’ll be getting the wood carving accessories so that I can make my own wooden shapes for gilding rather than having to use shop-bought shapes. Loved the tip on pulling towards you to the left, then going back away from you to clean the lines. Quick question...I'm left handed, so... I just kinda go with what works, but can totally tell when it's wrong. I have been carving walking staffs so wood positioning gets tricky. (Have considered making a half round pvc set of sawhorses for it)
For carving flat more intricate flat work I bought 18 inch wood glues circle from home depot and modified it by adding the turntable from a $5 spinning picture frame cube from walmart. Makes more complex patterns easier to work with while still maintaining the hand stability.
That is a good work around! So basically, just reverse everything if you are left handed, instead of pulling towards you, push away to eat at the wood. You can get used to this way or upgrade to a Foredom, which has a forward and reverse option! It is pricey but worth it :)
@@CorneliusCreations Sadly not an option at the moment but someday... I am interested in mixing media types. For instance, the current staff I am working on will use lichtenberg fractals vs the stipling you have demonstrated in other videos, as the negative space is large between the snowstorm clouds. Going the integrated red resin into the fractals to offset the blue. Top. Of staff has a selenite crystal with color changing leds inside over the reusable battery pack insert and a little on/off switch I wired up. Seal as much as I can in resin once it's done. Selenite is cheap and pretty, but water soluble. :(

My good tools all walked away, so starting kinda from scratch again.

I have been watching your videos and have been following many of your tips. My carving has improved greatly. As much as I realise a lot of this is gonna be trail and error and practice. I wondered if you could advise me a little on speeds for various different bits. Thanks if you can.
The speed depends on the wood you are using and the burrs you use. Generally, the faster you go the smoother the cuts will be.
