Strange Russian tanks are increasingly being spotted at the front. T-72s with wide protective armor on top were called “turtle tanks”. They can probably be used for mine clearance.
According to Forbes, all of the spotted "turtle tanks" belong to the 5th Motorized Rifle Brigade, a former separatist unit that is now under Russian command.
Both Ukrainians and Russians tried to protect their tanks from drones and shells. For this purpose, protective cages or slats were used, which only slightly limited the rotation of its cannon turret.
The armor in the turtle tank's shell leaves only a small gap in the front and prevents the gun from rotating. The obvious disadvantages of homemade armor raise questions.
"The turtle tank's role seemed to be to destroy it," said weapons scientist Matthew Moss wryly.
These tanks likely serve as a breacher - a plow-equipped engineering vehicle whose main job is to guide other vehicles through a minefield to get them close enough to enemy lines to attack. It is assumed that the enemy will fire at the breacher, so the special vehicle is equipped with dense armor.
The US Army has the best breakthrough vehicle in the world, a nearly 70-ton vehicle that is essentially an M-1 tank without the gun and with mine-clearing equipment attached. At the end of last year, the Americans quietly gave the Ukrainians several of these assault breakers.
The Russian army does not have a breakthrough vehicle of the same class.
Faced with a Ukrainian minefield and swarms of tiny FPV drones, and without specially designed breachers, 5th Motorized Rifle Brigade technicians may have decided to create their own breachers.
If the theory is true, the Russians took older T-72 tanks - perhaps ones whose turrets already had trouble moving - and added two things every vehicle needed to break through: extra armor and mine-clearing gear. It is difficult to verify the presence of the second component of the breakthrough in “skull tanks”, because it is hidden behind the armor.
Analyst Rob Lee of the Foreign Policy Research Institute in Philadelphia spotted a mine roller on one of these tanks. This is a set of durable wheels that activate the mines just ahead of the vehicle.
"This 'turtle tank,' which was also the first of its type to have anti-drone equipment, continued to advance after driving through several mines," Li noted.
Now only one turtle tank has been destroyed - it was hit by artillery after returning to base after the battle on April 8. If there is any reason to fear for the long-term future of such tanks, it is that they are FPV protected.

Omg we returned to WW1
Lets be honest here, All it is is metal roofing lol
Yes this is an elaborated cope cage, which is perfect against drone attacks when clearing a minefield and this is what it is designed for.
yes its nothing special... you cant even call it real armour, but this is something called spaced armor. Spaced armour can be sloped or unsloped. When sloped, it reduces the penetrating power of bullets and solid shot, as after penetrating each plate projectiles tend to tumble, deflect, deform, or disintegrate; spaced armour that is not sloped is generally designed to provide protection from explosive projectiles, which detonate before reaching the primary armour. Spaced armour is used on military vehicles such as tanks and combat bulldozers. so when the bullets hits the target is wil already explode after the first thing layer of ''armour'' after the explosion the fragments wil hit the armor in a way less effective way.
@@AllNickNamesAreAlreadyInUse land mines don't care if u put sheet metal all over the place also a fpv drone placed perfectly can fly under that sheet metal. But I get what ur say and instead of metal better off with wet plywood lol

@@imantsjansons5009 A Sea Turtle 🐢 with a giant snorkel 😁
@@imantsjansons5009 Technically this is a possibility. You just need a structure around it to prevent the drone to come in contact.
For the tank this is a good idea but apply only for mine clearing tanks because you can't rotate the turret.
The ukranians sure have stopped laughing when they realized that those tanks have electronic countremeasures/jamming devices to their FPV drones.
The Ukrainians have a chance to stop the turtle tanks by attacking them at the wheels which we can easily see. If they do it, those turtle tanks will stop and will become sitting ducks not being able to shoot other than about 30 degrees their turret can rotate. But soldiers could leave the tank being afraid of additional shelling onto them.
Obviously drones dropping plastic bags filled with paint onto the driver's view window will blind the turtle tanks. Technology!
These corrugated sheets over the turtles do not appear as additional armor but rather as trash humbug used to shield against the drones... I may be wrong though
As long as it can separate the impact, it will work very well.
Those are wooden sheds on top of a tank. They're not going to help against mines. They can stop at most one drone attack. If the shed collapses, the crew are trapped inside the tank. This story is complete nonsense.

I call the tanks sow bugs.
Heard that bigger rpg versions will still be able to penetrate tank. So, the full roof might get even bigger.
They are also equipped with electronic coutermeasures against ukranian drones, which are very effective. Now ukraine has to worry about not only the russian advance, but also a direct counter to their own drones.
Seems that up-armoring to effective levels vs ATGMs or artillery would add much weight, and drive components and suspension would suffer.
Once your opponent puts their tanks inside a metal shell, you’ve disabled that tank without further effort.
This is a breacher and mine clearer, it breaches and clears mines, how is it disabled?
Sounds like coping seeing as how it's actually effective.
Omg, tanks looks like old houses.
The obvious, USA does not have the best mine clearer as 70 tones would be too heavy for Ukraine, ask UK about their tanks and mud. The best would be one that operates in the environment - horses for courses.
2nd - you see that big green thing on the turtle tanks - EW - electronic warfare equipment. Basically stops most drones that get closer than say 100 meters. Now, those things are basically cut down versions of microwave ovens - (700 MHz to 7 or 8 GHz). So, having lots of metal between you and the emitters is a good thing (especially if you want to have children). And being at the front they not only clear mines, they keep the drones at bay.
But, but but: They only have shovels and washing machines! How can this be?
It's a surprisingly clever way to deal with anti-tank munitions, since virtually all of them rely on shape charges to penetrate armor. Two sets of armor, with a gap in between, thwarts precision ordnance. It's also stupid cheap, unlike fancy western "reactive" armor that has to be able to detect the incoming munitions. Turtle tanks just saunter on as is, no warning required.
So I do not have a lot of explosive knowledge but interested to know if the explosive drone flew in the opening of the "shell" near the barrel and exploded between the shell and the tank's armor would that increase the force of the explosion?
In the revelation that something looks square on a road, then one can presume it is a tank with skirts. A bit harder to believe, is that it is a new structure on the landscape that did not exist last month.
I’ve seen enough video of drones flying under that sheet metal and detonating to think they aren’t going to be much help
When these turtle tanks first appeared on the battlefield , Ukrainians were laughing at them.
Can't imagine that the turtle tank can withstand hits from fpv drones
It has a drone jammer on top of it, fpv can’t get close enough to deal significant damage. Cluster munitions prove to be useless against it, only way to destroy it is by stronger artillery or atgm.
Adapted mine-laying drones could put a couple down right in front of the tanks ;)
This should have been posted on April the 1st 😂😂😂
nonsense. most tanks are now destroyed by fpv kamkikaze drones that can fly horizontally into any opening
Reminds me or the stand-off armor plates used by the Germans in WW2.
In this case, can a fpv be used to throw gasoline bombs?
Christ - the armour may be dense but the posters on here are denser. The cover replicates house roofs and fools drones by not having a tank outline.
Just maybe this turtle is to stop the drones from winning. Another layer of defense.

Ukrainians should not be laughing at this tank or make fun of instead they should be worried about this tanks.
These are specifically modified for specific purposes as you can see these tanks are mine clearing tanks and they have anti-drone devices on them.
This video does not show the full footage but I have seen a full footage where these tanks were actually doing fantastic jobs. They were clearing mines and creating pathways for the oncoming tanks and IFV to safely move to their objectives, also the anti-drone equipment installed on them were jamming and destroying drone far away from them the drone could not even get close to these tanks.
The only way to destroy these tanks is to fire an accurate artillery rounds to hit it but it have to be a lucky shot because these tanks are moving so it is pretty useless to target with artillery rounds or even cluster munitions. There was a video where cluster munitions and artillery rounds were fired at these tanks and it keep moving because they all missed.
The only way to destroy these tanks to locate them when they are parked and hidden and. It moving then sent an artillery shells on it because drone are pretty useless as drone won’t even get near it due to it electric weapons platforms.
