  • Hi so today didn’t go to plan, wanted to get to the top of Great Dun fell, after a week of not being well I took more on than I should. Check to see how I got on this highest road in Britain. Even a E-bike can fail on this climb

    No need to apologise, it is still a nice video to watch. Three years ago I was overdoing the cycling, interval training, steep hill climbs etc and my heart went into atrial fibrillation. Ten months after, I had it reset to sinus rhythm in hospital theatre am only just recovering now so please everyone, be careful and just enjoy your cycling.

    Hi mate just completed great dun fell. I've just bought a range extender it saves battery anxiety but it doesn't give any extra assistance , its the best thing I have ever bought for the bike.The wind was light on the way up 😊

    Hard luck, mate. Don't feel bad. Its not a fail, its a target. And next year you'll nail it! Love the vids. Pick up my Gain D30, 105 in Borealis blue today. You cost me a lot of money!

    An excellent effort no shame in admitting defeat, pointless in pushing so hard that you cause yourself an injury,
    There's always another day to give it a go next time I'm sure you will succeed.
    Enjoy your weekend.

    I was considering taking by Ribble ALe up the fell during next week's good weather window. I was thinking of a warm up from Dufton and then just going pretty much full assist until either me or the battery ran out of energy. Having watched your video I think I will put this one on the backburner and try some of the lanes around Eskdale and the Duddon first.

    • @LakeDistrictcyclist
      @LakeDistrictcyclist  10 місяців тому

      I started a dufton just to warm legs up, I started with no assist for the 1st bit and think I burned my legs out, need to get some training in for next year. Love Duddon, my Wrynose videos go up that way, stunning hardly any cars 👌😊

    Absolutely nothing to apologise for. Good effort. I think you’re right about using up your legs at the beginning. Better to start at level 1 and move up when necessary. Check the wind beforehand too.

    Good effort, it's a brutal climb. You set yourself a marker, next time you simply have to pass that marker and keep trying till you eventually get to the top

      @@LakeDistrictcyclist Good man, you will conquer it! it's rated by Simon Warren as an 11/10 in his Greatest Climbs series and the only climbs imo that are harder than it are Hardknott Pass and The Colwyd in Wales. The Colwyd stands alone and is insane then Hardknott with those 30+% bends and then for me Dun Fell is right behind them. I only just discovered your channel but good work, I am enjoying working through your videos.

    Hi mate you can't win them all ,a wind in your face on a long climb doe's something to the mind it tells the legs they can't do it we have all been there. You were knocking on I've never gone that fast ever 😮

    What an amazing effort. At least you know the limits of you and the bike. Unfortunately the rear hub motor gives up on you when you hit the wall of a steep climb, then you are then grinding up with the extra weight of the bike and your heart rate and stamina get tested to the max. Don't beat yourself up I can hear it in your voice. You still would have come up short even if you put the motor on at the start. I had the same experience on the London To Brighton ride in June and had to stop on the last hill after nearly making it all the way up but I had already done 45 miles in my legs so you could say there is a comparison to be made there matey (you had the high % and I had the distance and tiredness)as we have the same bikes same weight and prob same fitness levels. What you achieved was fantastic and its just that you ran out of mechanical advantage and the motor just did not hit the sweet spot for your cadence. You went into the anaerobic zone and the lactic acid that built up in your legs and forced your heart rate too high is just another wall to get over in our struggle with the hills. I have tried a Specialized SL Creo (rented for a weekend) its a mid drive motor 35NM and it was better then the Orbea on the climbs as it delivered even at low cadence 40rpm, 3mph, 70% of its assist so I was able to get up the test hills at 40 miles I cant with the Orbea even though I was alot slower I did not go into the red zone heart rate wise (150-160) and did not feel my body was at max effort, legs were spinning not max pushing I was seated, felt relaxed and not panicking about what was in front of me. Just though you needed a boost matey. Sterling effort.

      Thanks mate, couldn’t of summed it up myself, I wasn’t going to post video as I was annoyed with myself but thought it was good to show failures too. Thank you for your support I appreciate it. How was the specialized SL when motor was off? And how long does battery last, as we are similar might be good comparison 😊

      @@LakeDistrictcyclistThe Specialized Turbo creo is definitely the better machine & the torque sensor a mid hub drive is much better than our X35 system. I too have found it struggles on 15% + climbs

    • @oxharp

      Weighed both bikes D30 and Specialised were the same. 15kg. The bike I got was a medium Specialized Creo SL. with the SL 1.1 mid drive motor. I was lucky as the demo bike had a 46T front chain ring was a 1x and 11/42 at the back, full carbon model with c38 full carbon wheels and Shimano Ultegra Di2 which were really nice. It also had blips on the handlebars to change the assist levels so I was spoilt abit. It was a good machine but I had a few issues like I did not like the motor whine which was quite annoying at times but not severe (but I could get used to it I suppose), I also did not enjoy the 1x that much and at T junctions found I was in too high a gear to get out quickly and it took half a pedal revolution to get it right which I though was a bit dangerous on busy roads agin I could get used to it. 2x is so much easier just clog down to the baby and your good no matter where the chain is. I also got numb hands but thst prob because it was 42 bars and I have the redshift wide 47bars on mine. The Di2 was great but I did not like the clonk shifting under load up and down the cassette very off putting and noisy. Spoke to Specialized after the demo and they said that its prob out of fine tuning adjustment as its out every weekend and gets pretty abused. I also did not like the carbon frame much as it had the see through carbon style and looked ugly to me. I did an adjustment ride of 10 miles on the friday to get comfy. Charged her up to 100% and did some hill reps for an hour or so Sat. 16% x 200meters. did about 15 miles there and back did 10 all reps at different cadence and assist levels 50, 60, 70rpm and fast as I could in eco, sport and turbo. The bike got me up to the top every time with different levels of effort in each assist mode so was impressed with that. Tried really grinding up at walking pace and it still delivered. Sunday went for a 40miles ride with the big hills at the end about a mile 11% with a small 50meter 7% flat in the middle so no rest. Battery at finish was 11% and went into eco mode for last couple of miles. Prob same as the Orbea for me as I compared some older data from my rides on the Orbea. I would need a Range extender to compare with my RE. I also did the first 5 miles no assist as a warm up which I usually do. There was no real difference apart from gear choice on the 1x as I am not that used to it. Seemed pretty much the same to me. Going to try this week from my LBS a Scott addict 30 eride with the x20 motor and Ultegra 11.5kg, and a emtb with the new TQ motor as they did not have a road version for me but the motor is tuned the same so I should be able to do the same hill tests on both for a decision to purchase possible a mid drive machine. Hope that helps buddy. Soz about the length but thought you would like all the details. If I was going to go for the Specialzed I would look for the E5 aluminium version and upgrade it to SRAM etap with 1x and 10/44 12 speed. Force shifters with the blips on the bars as they are a game changer for me.

      @oxharp 11 місяців тому

      @@brookes79 Hi could be the way I weighed them on some bathroom scales and not hanging them like you see on the videos. I just weighed myself and then held the bikes one by one so could be wrong. The Specialzed rep said they were about 15kg fully loaded when I asked when I picked it up which made me weigh them when I got home to see. I cant think what else it could have been apart from the flat pedals I had and the front and rear mudguards that were on it, the Tubless solution in the tires and my Garmin 840 and out front mount, Cyclic front light and camera and rear varia radar and break down kit bag?
