Once something gets old enough, the quality stops matter AS MUCH to the majority of collectors as for one, it’s impossible almost to halt and two, it’s just to be expected. Hell, so many people have begun collecting others childhood sets with decent looking but definitely played cards as they have beautiful aesthetic and more importantly stories tethered to them.
So it's precisely the same stuff that Blockbuster used to spray onto CDs to "remove scratches" - which essentially stripped and polished a thin layer of disc. Can't wait to see how some of these tampered PSA 10s will look in 5 years or so.
I agree i always thought it had some level of isopropyl cuz i use that stuff to clean so many things ive never tried it on a card but ive used it to take pen ink off of console boxes and its what most stoners use to dissolve the nasty gloop glop in their bongs so it definetly can do a lot. There’s a fine line between Cleaning a card , and fixing a card … I feel like most people understand the difference and the concept but there’s always that 1 dude who will argue “ITS LIKE FIXING MY CAR BROO” 🥴
Secondhand market would be flooded with cards that's had this stuff applied to them and there is no real way to guarantee that when you purchase a card online that it hasn't had this stuff applied.
I've tried various products like this. It's basically glasses cleaner. It works well for little bits of dirt, but not much else. The polish is also meh. PSA has not been able to detect it, but TAG identifies it as an ink defect. Neither has returned my cards as altered.
@@AverageInternetCitizen It grades just like any other card. The difference is TAG gives you a report of every defect, labeled and pictured. So the ink defect turns up just like any other issue, like edgewear or dents.
Props to Kurt for selling a bottle of legit rubbing alcohol and ethanol, maybe a drop of dawn and charging a crap ton. I'm curing what's in that crap that gets off scratches I've heard of though. Otherwise, I think this solution is fine to use to get off dirt/oils, but trimming and applying ointments(filling in scratches) is where I consider alterations occuring.

Art is restored by professionals that have a college degree in restoration and/or years of apprenticeship, disclose chemicals used and document it on the provenance. In cards it’s done by amateurs using chemicals made in a guys basement, not disclosed and passed of as original unrestored cards. In art they would call that fraud, but in cards scammers want to call it cleaning or prepping.

The chemical, alcohol? Thatl evaporate. Cards are handled by humans and could have any number of oils or residue on them, making detecting anything specific problematic. This cleaning solution is so benign - the real argument is the polish/wax that you apply AFTER cleaning cards with the spray. I'm ok with it as all museums clean, protect, and restore their pieces and that doesn't devalue it, right?

I think it’s too much of a hassle to worry about. There seems to be no way to tell if the stuff has been used on a card as grading companies have well proven. When buying online or even when buying graded, there’s a decent chance you have a restored card without even knowing. At that point, not going to get my panties in a twist over it. If it looks better than it did before and holds up over time, might as well accept it IMO.

Just for the “water is a chemical” sympathizers: water is a polar chemical which can NOT chemically affect other polar liquids such as ink. Non-polar chemicals, such as Isopropyl alcohol, can chemically affect ink and dissolve and completely separate the bonds of substances like ink from paper
polar chemicals can affect other polar chemicals though, like dissolves like is taught in any chem science class. Also, isopropyl will evaporate before any setting in liquids take place & depending on the strength used would not affect polar ink.
yep I always figured it was something similar to a glass cleaning solution and I make my own by diluting ammonia free glass cleaner with distilled water to clean cards. too much alcohol content will strip finishes and ink but you need a little to lift oily grime

Just for the “water is a chemical” sympathizers: water is a polar chemical which can NOT chemically affect other polar liquids such as ink. Non-polar chemicals, such as Isopropyl alcohol, can chemically affect ink and dissolve and completely separate the bonds of substances like ink from paper
polar chemicals can affect other polar chemicals though, like dissolves like is taught in any chem science class. Also, isopropyl will evaporate before any setting in liquids take place & depending on the strength used would not affect polar ink.

so lower grade than rubbing alcohol, this isnt stronger than alcohol. watered down alcohol ok cool
yep I always figured it was something similar to a glass cleaning solution and I make my own by diluting ammonia free glass cleaner with distilled water to clean cards. too much alcohol content will strip finishes and ink but you need a little to lift oily grime
