So I went into a deep dive (I’m biomedical engineer/physician) I was looking at the variance of the measurements so it turns out it the scales will be off by 10+/- %. With the body scales with their companion app they tend to adjust with time and the variance drops to 5% but it’s pretty much the same algorithm across-the-board for all BIA scales and devices. The tuning comes with the the apps but you have apps like macroFactor that can take in the data and make the adjustments. DEXA even thou it’s not as “precise” it’s variance, is less then 5%. So essentially, if you were to take multiple DEXA scans a week average out the months you’d be within 3% variance. Therefore making the body fat % more accurate. Your other video with the auro strap actually shows a good job of showing the margin of error advertently. So I’d say understanding that BIA algorithms are all the same industry standard id tell you guys buy the cheapest scale you can afford. As for being obese and a fat percentage, above 28 the variance is like 15 up to 25% off. So for those patients I’d suggested going off of weight lost and waiting till at least they get under a BMI of 25 before using a % of fat as any level of measurement of progress.

I still have an Ironman Bodyscale from 25 years ago. The main function of working as a weight scale remains Impeccable and accurate. I can always rely on seeing perfect difference even after going to the bathroom or soaking in a hot bath.
The normal vs athletic modes for bodyfat confuse me, but I take the average of the 2 and it varies a lot depending on hydration etc.
You can use it to check trending lowest bf if you are dieting but I'd point people towards the Navy method and calipers for more reliable bodyfat changes.

The handgrip measurement scales should be significantly better since 4 instead of 2 points are used to make measurements. The more measurement points, the more accurate the measurement AND new parameters can be obtained. I would suspect the handgrips would deal with "upper" vs "lower" body types.

Renpho user here. Did an experiment by having multiple profile of different height / gender combinations and weight with them, and within 5min my body fat ratio fly from 15% to 25%. Just for fun I weighted myself with the same profile, and then weighted again holding a jug of water, and my body fat flew from 25% to 26%.
Conclusion: the body fat % is just a guess based on your height, body weight and gender, it have nothing to do with a measurement, and the metallic electrode thing is likely just a decoration. It's accurate when...surprisingly, your build is similar to what the app assumed.

The question I have is... Is the possible 20% inaccuracy random or is it consistent per person? Meaning... If you measure yourself 5 times in one hour will they be up to 20% different from each other, or 20% different from professional equipment? The consistency PER person is what matters if you are trying to track your body, not the absolute accuracy...

Hydrostatic: 18% Biolectric impedance: 18.8% Two things: Dexa machines are based on flawed, buggy software (they do quite a bit of interpretation with the limited raw data they collect). Second, they have to be calibrated to be accurate. If the Dexa isn't in a bonfide medical facility, the owners really won't bother with maintenance to make sure it's accurate. That's because medical facilities can get sued for malpractice, were little "fitness clinics" and University athletics departments can't.

Does the scale or app need to connect to the internet, or is everything done on your local network / app? For example, is the data stored on the phone, or is there some cloud service involved where if the company goes out of business the scale or app won't work?

So, which scale is consistently inaccurate, as in, is almost always off by Y?
Because if a scale is off by four pounds and, say, four percent in body fat/water/etc., and I can watch trends (as you point out), I’m happy with that.
