How Much Does An Acoustic To Electronic Drumset Conversion Cost?

  • We all want that acoustic look, but how much does it cost? In this video I go over the different prices the conversion COULD cost if you buy certain components. It ranges anywhere from $1000 for a cheap conversion, to $2000 depending on the parts for a better conversion. If you already have an acoustic drumset/cymbals/module, you could do the whole conversion for about $300.

    I really dig your videos. There is some content I'd love to see though. One of them is a solid review on mesh heads and an informed opinion on their effect on drum bearing edges for those of us worried about our acoustic kits but also how well they work with different types of triggers. Another I feel you answered for the most part here but It would still be cool to see a video dedicated to this; a practical way to convert you acoustic drums that can easily be undone for example going electronic for home use and acoustic for live. Stay awesome man!

    I think just like buying any edrum kit they need to go to the top end of their budget, or risk outgrowing what they have created. Get the best stuff you can afford to get the best result you can. The module is mostly where I would be looking for quality as the samples are what you will hear in the end.

    Peavey made a few low end kits, but they also made some really nice stuff. I believe they came out with their radial thing before isolation mounting was widely used, but theirs had no lug hardware inside the shell.

    Thanks for all these videos. About to start on mine and I pretty much know how to do it from start to finish. I might throw up just a very simplified cover of things I did since i'm focused on a budget build for using DAW Vsti's so i plan to use dual modules that are cheaper but I've used them before to have dual three zone rides if I want while I expand down the line to more cymbals. I might start with single ply meshes with the spot in the center I saw Samus try out since I got neck issues it might help me out to have some more spring and see what I can do with disc issues in my neck/shoulders etc. Definitely the way to go before building a drum studio for the acoustic kit down the road (since i don't know how much i can drum to begin with as it is, i figure half an hour a day tho). Might go with the drumtech design with the triggers, the three point to avoid hot spots. The materials needed shouldn't make it too expensive since I'm building my own triggers.

      find a cheap kit someone has in storage. I'm seeing this guy about a 5pc drum kit with a hihat and ride, hardware/stand for 150. full size. might be an 18 to 20 inch kick but that's fine for me, I'm not tuning it.
      I Plan to run dual alesis heads like that down the road so i can have dual 3 zone rides (i like to have them stereo, different rides/samples but the effect in use can be awesome with some grooves) If I want a good 3 zone ride I have to spend as much as converting a kit so that's why I"m going all out on one, just step by step. Lemon makes a decent aftermarket ride up to 18 inches for 150... you might want to up your cymbals for being tiny compared to all of the toms/drums except the smallest tome of 8 inch.
      I think that Lemon brand just rips off roland at fraction of the costs. Probably not as nice but I doubt anything worst than a hot spot which we use to at this point in the E Drum game.

    So, I was going to get the Alesis command, BUT, I have an old Pearl set. The cymbols suck. I have an Roland sound canvas sound module. Is there a way to use a sound canvas? It does not have the normal trigger inputs for individual inputs, like on the Alesis D4 I used to have. I guess the Pintech stuff is suppose to be good?

    There's also field, Asl , jobecky, and smart trigger make very expensive and quiet e cymbals that are 3 zone and real brass I made my own splash out of a knee brace and a cheap guitar center simmons trigger, I was taken back how easy a single zone cymbal trigger was to make and how real it felt I have the vh11 but I might buy the jobecky real feel high hat I just hope it triggers as well as the vh11

    Hey Justin,
    I want to convert an acoustic set to. I already own a crappy Fame DD6000, I bought it years ago for 600€ as midi controller for ezdrummer in my little homestudio. I already bought som 8“ mesh pads, but its still no fun to play so I want to convert a drumkit. I bought a used old schell set for 70€ and a td12 Modul for 400€. I want to use the jobeky 4 rod dual zone trigger for the snare and triggera trigger for the toms. I‘m still not sure what to do with the bass drum. DDrum Red Shot? Or maybe the Triggera Beater? What do you think? Talking about skins: I want to try out the Millenium QuiHead 2 Ply Mesh’s from Thomann. Did you already try them? About cymbals: I want to use the ones I‘ve got till I can afford better ones. My favorite would be the jobekey real feel HiHat and cymbals. I know that I will spend about 1500€ in the end, but I think there are some arguments on the plus side: I can upgrade things when I have the money, but I can start playing right now and In the end I have a full sized kit, I would not get that for 1500€ (I think 😉). And this kit will stay in my homestudio. I choose the TD12 because it has positional sensing and as far as I know should work fine with ezd or Superior Drummer. What do you think? Hello there, i am planning on doing an acoustic to electronic conversion project soon also and I was wondering if you could give me some advice/tips. I currently have a roland td9 w various brand cymbals from simmons, alesis, and roland and i was wondering what i could use for toms? I plan to use a 12 inch snare on a stand and keep my roland kd-9 so i was wondering how i could mount toms onto my rack. I currently already have the triggers (goedrum dual zone) and i plan on using shells from the ludwig accent jr kit. Do you know any shells that can mount directly onto l rods or do i have to buy separate mounts? Id like to know the cheapest way i could go upon this because i am doing this conversion on a budget. Thank you

    • @65Drums

      Mike, your video actually inspired me to take the leap. Starting from scratch, despite my TD-15K ( which I plan to sell whole or part out), with a set budget of about 3K. Justin hits most of the points I'm currently going through. The one exception is I decided on working cable management and that is driving me to get a 3 sided rack. Also, I'm not going the McGyver route. I plan to have this kit for some time and getting very good products.

    • @MikeLuke
      @MikeLuke 7 років тому +2

      Hi Kevin, thank you. Glad I could help you. And I highly agree, because I did actually the same. I absolutely understand that money IS an issue among musicians, that's the reason Justin's channel is so successful, because he really helps out. However, I always find it weird to see how cheap people go for electronic drums. Even drummers. I mean, we as drummers spend hundreds of dollars just for a splash cymbal (which, hands down, no one cares about except us, not even our band members). But when it comes to electronic drums, we believe having some crappy DIY-trigger or even worse hardware will do the job. This is something what really upsets me sometimes. The reason why still so many people think of electronic drums as "crap" or "not the real deal" is simply because they have crappy e-drums. Yes, I spent 250 bucks just for my snare drum trigger. But now I have zero issues with sensivity, response, hot spots or any other issues people too often claim about.
      Speaking of cable management, you may check out v-drumtips here on UA-cam. This cannel is run by my and Justin's good friend Marcel, he recently released a neat video about cable management.

      I've recently been researching how to convert my 6 piece pearl export into an e-kit and found that to do it properly (i.e. Mike Luke's way and also the Blackbird Custom Kit) would cost around $5,000 Australian. The kit setup im wanting to achieve is actually the same kit setup as the new Alesis strike pro kit that will be ready for shipping in Australia in July and is retailing for $3,600. So im now holding off on converting my Pearl export to see what the Alesis reviews are like. Im not willing to go down the cheap trigger/module route, which is why the cost of converting my existing kit will be quite high as I will only use quality parts. So thanks Mike Luke for your detailed videos, as well as 65 drums as i've learnt alot about A to E drum conversions since regaining an interest in drumming recently and stumbling upon your youtube channels :)

      I know this is an old question but for others that stumble upon it. Yes it will work if your on a budget. I am using it on my conversion. It has enough inputs for your standard kit with three toms and using it's expansion port you could get three cymbals and hi-hats. With drum splitters you can add more things if needed. It can also use Roland's 3 zone ride.

I saw a used one for 300 but it's just out of my budget to bother, plus no snare, but damn, always the coolest set up in my opinion. Brings in those cymbal stacks and layers.

    • @Kevslatvin
      @Kevslatvin 5 років тому

      That really depends on how mechanically inclined you are and if you can solder/ have a soldering iron thus being able to go the complete D.I.Y. route. You can buy all the mounting hardware to make your triggers at Lowe's/Homedepot, Walmart. Piezo's/jacks from Amazon. Not sure where to get the foam as I had access to scrap foam from work that just happened to be the right density.I bought eBridge triggers for my snare and bass drum and made my own for my toms. I got 3 of my heads from Prism drumheads bargin bin/seconds section for about half their normal cost. I still ended up with about $350 in heads and triggers. Problem is you don't know 'till you know when it comes to making triggers. Knowing what I know now I could probably have done triggers and heads for $$250. I'd say budget at least $450 if you're going to buy everything pre made. You might get out under $300 if you make it all yourself.

    I have an alesis strike on order. But it would be cool to to play on real acoustic drums with conversions. What would be better, keep the strike or buy an acoustic kit on Craigslist and convert it. Maybe spending around 2000. Like what would trigger better, the strike or the converted acoustic kit using reasonable triggers, mesh heads, etc.
